Abstract

African swine fever is a fatal hemorrhagic disease in the Suidae family that has become a significant economic challenge to the global pig farming industry. The continued spread of this disease has threatened global pork production and food security. Recognizing the disease manifestations and pathological changes of ASF is critical for a comprehensive and accurate early warning program. Knowledge of the key characteristics of this disease, such as its pathology anatomy, and histopathology, is also needed for early identification of ASF before establishing a tentative diagnosis. This article aims to discuss the pathologic changes and to update disease understanding in order to improve early detection of ASF in the field. A histopathological study of clinical samples collected during the February to April 2021 outbreak of ASF was performed to determine the characteristic lesions of ASF. Three dead ASFV-suspected pigs from a farm in Kupang regency were examined in this study. The main characteristics at the gross pathology inspection were hemorrhage and enlargement of the spleens and lymph nodes. The histopathologic findings confirmed spleen and lymph nodes hemorrhages, as well as congestion of spleen and follicle necrotic at the lymph nodes. Based on the clinical manifestation, pathological findings, and epidemiology observation, it is suspected that the pigs were infected with ASF. However, a molecular diagnostic test should be taken to confirm the definitive cause of the pig’s deaths.

Abstract

East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is one of the centers for beef cattle in eastern Indonesia, it has large areas and supportive natural potential. On the other hand, at Setetes Madu cattle group, in Camplong Village II, Fatuleu sub-district, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, farming management and animal health management still traditionally maintains without planning and recording, as well as cattle rearing practice. Several problems of cattle farming development at Setetes Madu cattle group are, (1) unknown or unidentified of the individual reproductive health status of acceptor cattle; (2) minimum knowledge of farmers about cattle reproductive management includes breeding management and recording. The approaches to solving the problems are, (1) identification of the Reproductive Status of Acceptor Cattle to determine individual cattle reproductive health status and treatment to a cattle with the reproductive disorder; (2) educating cattle’s breeder about planned, recorded, measurable, and periodically evaluated and continuously of reproductive management. Without good reproductive management, efficiency reproductive will not be achieved, whereas, without reproductive efficiency, productivity will not be achieved. Reproduction performance and cattle health are important to achieve optimization, reproductive efficiency, profitability, and sustainable cattle breeding.

Abstract

Increasing the economy of rural communities is a process of improving an economic effort to meet the needs of life through an empowerment system form that meets human needs by utilizing surrounding natural resources. Natural resources owned by rural communities are the potential to be developed to improve the economy of the village community. If freshwater aquaculture is well developed and managed properly, it will bring beneficial results in line with the increase in fulfillment of public’ requirements. The purpose of community service program activities in Camplong II Village, Fatuleu District, Kupang Regency was community empowerment through freshwater aquaculture using the pond method. The people of Camplong II village have limited access to obtaining fresh fish products as its location is around 45-50 km from Kupang city which is known for its fresh sea products. Thus, the activities implemented were training on the installation of a square pond, providing 500 fish seeds and fish feed for 2 periods, mentoring and monitoring the maintenance of this pond, and developing human resources. The results obtained: installation of several fish pond with a diameter of 3 meters and a height of 4.0 m, an increase in community knowledge and skills, an early fish harvest stocked from this period which can improve the welfare of the community in Camplong II Village, Kupang Regency. From the results obtained there is potential in the form of land, water sources, and facilities that can be empowered to increase fish water farming production.
