Abstract

This article discusses three main issues. First, symbolic construction of the hajj among the Bugis; Second, the interaction of social and cultural construction of the Bugis; and third the meaning of the hajj and its implication for the whole cultural system of the Bugis. Building on the theory of symbolic interaction, this qualitative research argues that the high number of hajj does not automatically relate to the religiosity of the people performing it. For the Bugis, the hajj embodies complex meanings which signify symbolic transformation of Bugis self-personality. The Bugis are excessively obsessed by the hajj’s symbols, such as clothe, attributes and a title attired and received after performing this ritual. To the Bugis, the hajj is a dream that they have envisioned since childhood. After they get married or reach thirty years old, the appeal to perform the hajj become stronger. The eagerness to conduct this ritual seems to be more tangible especially for unmarried women. By holding the title as Haji, one who has visited Mecca to do the hajj, the Bugis deserve two titles; religious as panrita (ulama) and cultural as to sugi (rich). Therefore, to the Bugis in Bone, the hajj escorts them to attain the highest personal transformation.

Abstract

The research on early identification of bacterial from juveniles top shell (Trochus niloticus L.) and giant clam (Tridacna squamosa Linn.) was conducted at Unhas’s hatchery at Barrang Lompo island during August-October 2006. Bacteriology test was done at Microbiology Laboratory of Biology Department, Math and Science Faculty, Hasanuddin University, Makassar. The quantitative test was done using Most Probable Number (MPN) and Standard Plate Count (SPC) methods. While the qualitative test included bacteria colony observation, macroscopic, microscopic, and biochemical test. Macroscopic observation was done by assessing the form, elevation, color, ridge, and inner structure of bacterial colony. Microscopic observation was conducted by using Gram and spora stain. The result of MPN method shows the average total bacteria for juveniles top shell is 17.5 x 102 cell/ml and for giant clam is 6.65 x 102 cell/ml, while SPC results indicate the average total bacteria for juveniles top shell is 4.8 x 105 cell/ml and for giant clam is 3.0 x 105 cell/ml, respectively. The result of biochemical test identifies 5 genera of bacteria such as Micrococcus, Bacillus, Streptomyces, Escherichia and Enterobacter.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is an action research to develop the potential of students toward the creation of a community of students who proactively promote the issue of climate change and synergize the potential of students in integrating disaster reduction in the context of climate change on coastal and small island communities. This studies using two methods are Community-Based Research and Asset-based Community Empowerment. The results of the study are as follows. The development of students' potential to promote climate change is well placed to do given the students are change agents are expected to play a major role in the preservation of nature amid the threat of environmental damage become apparent. In order to synergize the potential of students in integrating disaster reduction in the context of climate change on small island coastal communities need to do some strategy. In this study, conducted workshops during the three days with two activities, namely an understanding of climate change through the medium of video and mentoring training assess the vulnerability of coastal communities to climate change. The understanding of climate change through the medium of video is intended to give an idea of what the global climate change. There are four categories of videos watched by the participants, namely (1) the introduction of global climate change, (2) the impact of climate change in different parts of the world, (3) adaptation to climate change in several places in Asia, and (4) instructions to adaptation as well as campaigning for adaptation to society. Training of community assistance is intended to prepare students as facilitators assisting the community in assessing the vulnerability of coastal communities in a participatory social and community together with preparation preparing climate change adaptation strategies. Keywords: Climatic video, climate change education, vulnerability assesment, climate assistance
