Abstract

Hermeneutical method introduced by Farid Esack promotes a model of interpretation that combines texts and contexts. This means that interpretation begins from texts and is applied to contexts and then moves from contexts back to texts. It is thus a dialectical process where understanding of contexts should be confirmed to texts and the result of this process is used as a guideline of practice. This hermeneutic is grounded on some Qur’anic key words, such as taqwa, tauhid, al-nas, al-mustadl’afûn fi al-ardh, ‘adl, qisth, and jihad, to avoid arbitrary interpretation of the Scripture. Applying Esack’s hermeneutic to interreligious relations, this study argues that interreligious cooperation between Muslims and non-Muslims is not forbidden but encouraged. This conclusion comes from the understanding of the verses pertaining to plurality of religions, religious affinities, and the story of Moses exodus and Israel children from Egypt. In these three examples, the Qur’an explicitly and implicitly gives respects and admits the truth of religions. Therefore, interreligious cooperation between Muslims and non-Muslims should be built up on this theological consciousness.

Abstract

Naguib’s Islamization of science is a response to negative impacts of modern science progress (the West) which according to him is not based on Islamic world view. This has an impact on epistemological aspects, so that it can not be used as a method of scientific development in Islamic science. Therefore, there should be reformation of ontology and epistemology to get harmony and usefullness for the development of Islamic sciences. According to Naguib, world view of Islam is monotheism, unity, integration between psyche and physical, spiritual and material, even the spiritual aspect is more important. Based on this, the source of knowledge is not just the material of objects but the meaning of the object, so that knowledge does not fall on positivistic, materialistic and empiric. The method of achieving knowledge is done through the power of observation, rational thought, interpretations of revelation and intuition. The methods are not contradictory but complementary. As the first step of Islamization of science, which change the aspect of metaphysics (world view) and epistemology, according to Naguib, can be started by Islamization of language

Abstract

Bayani is a typical Arab epicurean based on the text. According to him, the source of knowledge is the text, which in the religious perspective is the Koran and the Hadith. How to get knowledge through earnest: (1) based on the editorial composition of the text being studied through lingistic analysis, (2) based on the qiyas or ambgi method seen from one of three aspects, namely the relationship between ashl and far ', ilbt which is on ashl and far ', and the tendency that unites ashl and far'. In its development, the Bayan Anabgi is not only used to explore the knowledge of the text, but also used to understand the reality of non-physical conditions and to logically interpret physical reality (qiyas al ghaib ‘ala al syahid). Among other things, about metaphysical theories and theological doctrines. Because it is only based on the text, bayani thinking becomes "limited" and focused on things that are accidental rather than substantial, so that it is not able to dynamically follow the historical and social development of this fast society. In fact, the current thinking of Ishbm which is dominated by Bayani fiqhiyah is less able to respond and balance the development of world civilization.

Abstract

Farid Esack is one of the Islamic scholars concerning on religious pluralism. Pluralism, according to him, does not only deal with inclusiveness as Nur Kholis Madjid and Alwi Shihab thought and political interest-based as John Hick and Hans Kung concerned but also theological perspective. It means that the truth of other religions is not based on their only existence but because of Qur'anic acceptance textually to their existence beside Islam. According to Esack, al-Qur'an has clearly accepted other religions' existence beside Islam.

Abstract

Potency of human being soul, according to al-Farabi, consisted of the grow energy (vegetative), momentum (animal), illusive energy (imagine), natural existence energy (ratio) and feel energy. We obtain our knowledge by externals senses related to momentum, and internal senses existing in illusive energy, also the intellect existing in natural existence energy. However, this intellect is unlike ratio. It resides above ratio, because ratio works and thinks only pursuant to data of senses, whereas intellect works pursuant to radiation from "above" (divine being), so that there's no mistaking. Intellect consists of 4 levels: potential intellect, actual intellect, acquirement intellect, and active intellect. In the process of knowledge, active intellect is source of human being knowledge obtained after we powered potential and actual intellect. Keywords: energy of soul and intellect.

Abstract

There are various thoughts on the integration of religion and science, such as the model i‘jâz al-Najjâr, the model of Islamization of al-Faruqi, Ijmâlî Sardar, the Islamic science of Husein Nasr and the universal science of ‘Abd al-Salâm. According to Nidhal, those thoughts still have weaknesses and can not be developed so it needs another alternative. Therefore, Nidhal offers a quantum approach to the integration of religion and modern science. It is based on three principles: non-contradictory principle, layered interpretation principle, falsifiable-theistic principle. The first one is as a basis to integrate religion and science, the next is treated to understand and interpret the sacred text (Qur’an) as the basis of religion, the latest is to ensure the pattern applied in science. Based on these principles, where there is a "movement" connecting religion and science, both religion and science become possible to be reconciled.
