Abstract

This research is an annotated translation which is entitled An Annotated Translation of Sharon M Draper’s Out of My Mind. The object of the research is an English novel titled Out of My Mind. The purposes of this research are: 1) to attain factual information concerning the problems faced by the translator/researcher in translating the source text and 2) to give plausible solutions to the difficulties he encountered. In conducting this annotated translation research, the researcher employed the introspective and retrospective method. There are 25 aspects of language that analyzed by the researcher. Those difficulties were at the same time problems for the researcher. To solve the difficulties, the researcher employed some strategies such as direct translation, descriptive translation, naturalization, paraphrasing, explicitation, implication, cultural filtering, loan word, shift and many more. The researcher identified 100 items of data and annotated 25 items and the result and analysis revealed that there were 11 out of 25 data using syntactic strategy, 9 data out of 25 using pragmatic strategy, and 5 out of 25 data using semantic strategy. From twenty-five data he analyzed, the translator found that his translation contains 7 out of 25 data using form principle; 7 out of 25 data using meaning principle; 6 out of 25 data using idiom principle; and 5 out of 25 data using source language influence principle.Key words: annotation, introspective, retrospective, translation.

Abstract

Sebagian masalah yang dihadapai para mahasiswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris adalah masalah pelafalan. Penulis melakukan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui jenis kesulitan yang dialami mahasiswa dalam melafalkan kata kerja bahasa Inggris yang tidak beraturan (irregular verbs) dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kesalahan pelafalan tersebut. Jenis penelitian ini adalah studi empiris dengan metode kualitatif. Data primer dalam penelitian ini adalah partisipan yang melakukan pelafalan yang hasilnya akan direkam. Para responden ini, sebanyak dua puluh dan dipilih secara acak, sudah belajar bahasa Inggris selama lebih dari 12 tahun. Pemilihan responden dilakukan oleh peneliti secara acak. Peneliti mendapatkan data dengan cara merekam bunyi pelafalan dan hasil interview dari para respondent. Kesulitan yang dialami mahasiswa dalam melafalkan irregular verbs adalah sebagai berikut: a) melafalkan kata-kata yang mengandung huruf yang tidak berbunyi (silent letters); b) melafalkan huruf vokal yang bunyinya tidak konsisten; c) melafalkan huruf konsonan letup; d) melafalkan kata kerja yang hurufnya sama tetapi bunyi berbeda. Faktor yang mempengaruhi mahasiswa masih sulit melafalkan irregular verbs adalah karena: a) perbedaan system bunyi antara bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris; b) inkonsistensi beberapa bunyi dalam bahasa Inggris; c) gangguan dari dialek daerah para siswa; dan karena d) bahasa Inggris memiliki silent letters sedangkan bahasa Indonesia tidak memilikinya. Terdapat lima kata kerja yang paling banyak salah dilafalkan oleh para responden yakni kata thought, caught, fought, bought, dan brought. Kelima kata kerja tersebut mengandung bunyi silent ‘gh’. Dengan ditemukannya jenis kesulitan dan faktor permasalahan pelafalan ini, para pengajar bahasa Inggris diharapkan dapat mengembangkan dan memperbaiki metode pengajaran khususnya dalam pengajaran mata kuliah pronunciation dan speaking.

Abstract

Abstrak PkM (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat) adalah sebuah kegiatan yang secara terus menerus dilakukan oleh sebuah Perguruan Tinggi/institusi dalam menjalankan perannya untuk perduli pada masyarakat yang ada disekitarnya. Dalam kaitan melaksanakan kegiatan PkM ini, maka para dosen yang berkerja diperguruan tinggi turut menjalankan fungsinya sebagai pendidik di tengah-tengah masyarakat. Penulis sekaligus pelaksana PkM dalam hal ini telah melaksanakan pelatihan pelafalan bunyi konsonan frikatif dan afrikatif kepada anak-anak di TK Islam Dua Putera, Cibitung. Tujuan utama pelatihan ini adalah untuk melaksanakan kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat sebagai salah satu unsur dari Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi. Kegiatan ini juga bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat melalui pembekalan keterampilan secara langsung kepada masyarakat sekitarnya. Kegiatan PkM ini dilakukan dengan cara mengajak anak-anak belajar sambil bernyanyi. Lagu-lagu perdengarkan kepada mereka melalui tape recorder dan tayangan vide di monitor televisi. Teks lagu juga dapat dilihat di layar TV. Cara kedua adalah dengan menuliskan kata-kata khusus yang mengandung bunyi frikatif dan afrikatif (/f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/) di lembaran karton dengan tulisan yang cukup besar agar mudah dibaca. Selain itu, tulisan juga dibuat berwarna warni agar menarik perhatian anak-anak dan juga didukung dengan gambar-gambar yang sesuai dengan kata-kata yang adadalam lagu tersebut. Kemudian pelatih mengajak bernyanyi bersama dengan terlebih dahulu memberi contoh baris per baris. Setelah itu, anak-anak diminta meniru pelafalan yang diberikan pelatih. Proses belajar mengajar berlangsung dengan baik. Peserta PKM yakni siswa-siswi TK Islam Dua Puterayang berjumlah 29 orang sangat aktif dan merespon materi yang diajarkan oleh pengajar. Siswa/i sangat senang dengan lagu-lagu bahasa Inggris, yang cocok dengan usia mereka, yang diberikan oleh pengajar di setiap awal kegiatan belajar mengajar. Abstract Social service, known as PkM (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat) in Indonesia, is an activity that is continuously carried out by universities or institutions as one of its role to increase prosperity to surrounding communityby giving free education or training to the society. The lecturers who work in higher education/institutions carry out their functions as educators to share knowledge to society. The writer, the doer of PkM, has conducted training on the pronunciation topic (fricative and affricative sounds) for children in kindergarten school named TK Dua Putera, Cibitung. The main purpose of this service is to carry out a social service activities as one element of the Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi, three main tasks of universities. This social service is carried out by training the children to pronounce fricative and affective sounds of English. The students are asked to listen the some English songs played through a tape recorder and also video footage on television monitors. Song texts can also be viewed on a TV screen. The second way for teaching them the sounds is to write special words that contain fricative and affective sounds (/ f /, / v /, / θ /, / ð /, / s /, / z /, / ʃ/, / ʒ/, / tʃ/, / dʒ/) on cardboard sheets.Those words are written in big as well as large letters so the words are easy enough to read. In addition, the letters is also made colorful to attract the attention of children. The trainer invites the children to sing along. After that, the children were asked to imitate the pronunciation given by the trainer. The learning process ran well. The participants, 29 students at TK Dua Putera Cibitung, were very active and they responded to the material taught by the instructor well. The students were very happy with this learning method because they could sing along with the trainer while learning English. These topics (fricative and affricative sounds) are suitable for their age because children on their age are easy to imitate and learn foreign languages.

Abstract

The use of slang words in teenagers’ life is common in every country in the world. But in every country, each language is different in its words’ formation. The sources, as well as the formations of such words, are different from each country. The objectives of this study are 1) to find out the lists of slang words including abusive words used by Jakartan’s teenagers; 2) to analyze the morphological features of such slang words, and 3) to find out the negative impacts of using such slang words based on parents as well as school teachers’ opinions. This study uses a qualitative approach. The collected data in this research will be analyzed and reported descriptively. The data are encrypted from the audio-recorders, questionnaires, and also taken from the interview session. The conclusion of this research is that there are ten word-formations of slang words used by Jakarta's teenagers in their speaking with others daily. The researcher found out 558 slang words which are usually used by Jakartan’s teenagers in their daily speaking with their peers. The 558 words are grouped into 10 word-formation; they are reduplication (0.4%), clipping (3.9 %), onomatopoeia (4.5%), borrowing (4.8 %), other formation - backward letters and backward syllables (5.9 %), inflection (8.1 %), acronym (11.8 %), mixed/multiple processes (12.2 %), coinage (17.4 %), and blending (31 %). Out of 150 respondents – 100 school-teachers and 50 lecturers – there are 129 respondents (86%) who stated that there are negative impacts of using slang words by the students in their academic qualification in the learning process in the class they are teaching. This research is expected to be useful for all people around the world especially for the knowledge of linguists, lecturers, teachers as well as parents in order to know and understand the meaning of slang words used by teenagers in their speaking with their peers in their communication with others daily.

Abstract

Penulis sekaligus pelaksana PkM dalam hal ini telah melaksanakan pelatihan dengan tema pelafalan bunyi bahasa Inggris dasar (Basic English Pronunciation). Tujuan utama pelatihan ini adalah untuk meningkatkan keterampilan masyarakat melalui pelatihan komunikasi dasar kepada anak-anak yang berada di kelurahan Warakas RT. 07/07 Tanjung Priok, Jakarta Utara. Kegiatan PkM ini dilakukan dengan cara mengajak anak-anak belajar aktif melafalkan bunyi bahasa Inggris dasar. Metode palatihan adalah menggunakan beberapa sarana seperti ceramah, gambar, video dan bunyi bahasa Inggris dasar yang diputar melalui tape recorder atau tayangan di monitor LCD atau projektor. Pelafalan kosakata dasar bahasa Inggris dapat diajarkan dengan menuliskan kata-kata khusus yang mengandung bunyi unik bahasa Inggris seperti bunyi (/θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/).Peserta PKM yakni para siswa yang berjumlah 25 orang sangat aktif dan merespon materi yang diajarkan oleh pengajar. Dari hasil di atas maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa; 1) sebanyak 94% peserta PkM mengatakan bahwa materi yang diberikan oleh pelaksana PkM sesuai dengan kebutuhan mereka; 2) sebanyak 96% responden mengatakan materi yang diberikan oleh pelaksana PkM mudah untuk mereka pahami; 3) 93% responden mengatakan bahwa materi yang diberikan menambah kemampuan mereka dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris; 4) 100% responden menyatakan bahwa pengajar menguasai materi yang diajarkan; 5) 94% responden setuju bahwa pelaksana PkM mengajarkan materi dengan menarik; 6) sebanyak 96% mengatakan bahwa para pelatih bersikap ramah dan sopan saat memberikan pelatihan. 7) seluruh peserta pelatihan (100%) mengatakan setuju jika pelatihan bahasa Inggris diadakan kembali, dan 8) sebanyak 80% menginginkan topik bahasan “grammar/tenses” untuk diberikan kepada mereka jika PkM terlaksana kembali sedangkan sebanyakk 20% dari mereka memilih untuk mendapatkan topik ‘berbicara/speaking’

Abstract

This research is a descriptive analytical research. The object of the research both the novel of “The Naked Face” and its translation “Wajah sang Pembunuh”. The purposes of this research are: a) to find out the translations of English helping verbs do/does/did into Indonesian; and b) to analyze the strategies used in translating English helping verbs do/does/did into Indonesian. In conducting this descriptive research, the researcher employed a qualitative research design with descriptive analysis. There are 30 English helping verbs which are analyzed by the researcher. The researcher analyzed the strategies used in translating English helping verbs do/does/did into Indonesian. It is found that the translator used four strategies namely emphasis on stylistic appropriateness, pragmatic, naturalizing, and syntactic strategies. Most of the strategies used are the emphasis on stylistic appropriateness. It emphasized the choice of oral mode.

Abstract

Salah satu permasalahan mahasiswa dalam penulisan karya ilmiah adalah kesalahan penulisan struktur kalimat Penelitian ini dibuat untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis kesalahan penulisan kalimat dalam skripsi dan laporan magang mahasiswa. Metode penelitiannya bersifat kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Hasil penelitian ini memaparkan 8 (delapan) jenis kesalahan penulisan, yaitu: (1) kesalahan penulisan poin-poin dalam sebuah kalimat, (2) kalimat tidak kohesif dengan judul artikel, (3) kalimat tidak memiliki subjek, (4) kesalahan penempatan tanda baca dalam kalimat, (5) struktur kalimat tidak teratur, (6) teknik penulisan yang salah terhadap kata pinjaman dari bahasa asing dalam sebuah kalimat (7) tidak adanya koherensi antar klausa dalam sebuah kalimat, dan (8) kalimat memiliki kata sambung yang tidak tepat. One of the students' problems in writing scientific papers is the error in writing sentence structure. This study was conducted to find out the types of errors in writing sentences in student thesis and internship reports. The research method is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The results of this study describe 8 (eight) types of writing errors, namely: (1) errors in writing bullet points in a sentence, (2) sentences that are not cohesive with the title of the article, (3) sentences that do not have a subject, (4) misplacement of signs. read in sentences, (5) irregular sentence structure, (6) incorrect writing techniques for loanwords from foreign languages ​​in a sentence (7) lack of coherence between clauses in a sentence, and (8) sentences have unconnected conjunctions. appropriate.

Abstract

The ability to communicate in English is very important in today's era. For this reason, abilities in this matter need to be honed from an early age, both from the kindergarten (TK) and elementary school (SD) levels. The Islamic Elementary School (SDI) Nurul Huda, East Jakarta, is one of the schools that is aware of this. In this case, SDI Nurul Huda is a partner who collaborates with the community service activity implementation team (PKM) to carry out an English language extracurricular activity for students. This community service activity aims to overcome the limitations of students in understanding the pronunciation or pronunciation of English vocabulary in speaking. The method of this PKM activity is in the form of English pronunciation training in the form of lectures, direct conversation practices, questions and answers, and discussions. After the PkM implementation was completed, the authors assessed two main things, namely the accuracy of the material for the participants and the success of the training implementation. From the survey results, it can be concluded that the training materials on English pronunciation and vocabulary can improve their ability to communicate in English. In terms of mastery and attitude of the trainer, the PkM participants gave a positive response stating that the trainer's attitude was friendly and polite during the training. The trainers are also very well versed in the material when providing training to the students. The author hopes that PkM training with materials like this can continue to be given to elementary school students in the future.

Abstract

This study generally aims at examining any factors that cause the college students still find difficulties in learning English and if there are any bad things experienced by the students from their teachers. The problems in this study are: 1) What are the influences that cause the English students still find English lesson difficult to understand English even though they have learned English for more than 10 years? 2) Did the English students have any bad experiences from their English teachers in the classroom which cause them have difficulties in understanding English lessons? The method used by researchers in this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The tools used in this study were video recorders and open-ended questions sheets. The primary data in this study is the respondents' answers to some questions delivered to them in the interview session. The respondents are the first-year students of batch 2018 at Gunadarma University located in Bekasi, West Java province. The researcher randomly selected 400 students who were studying English 1 and English 2 subject. It is found that the factors that cause the English learners still find some difficulties in learning English are caused by both internal and external factors. This study also revealed that some students had some bad experiences from their English teachers as long as they have studied English since they started learning English in kindergarten or primary school.

Abstract

Program Kampus Mengajar memiliki tujuan untuk membantu sekolah dalam menghadapi setiap kendala dan kesulitannya, baik dalam sistem pengajaran, administrasi maupun adaptasi teknologi. Tujuan penelitian ini ada dua hal, yaitu 1) untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis permasalahan yang para mahasiswa hadapi pada saat melaksanan program Kampus Mengajar di sekolah sasaran, dan 2) untuk mengetahui langkah-langkah yang dilakukan oleh para mahasiswa sebagai solusi untuk menyelesaikan masalah yang mereka hadapi pada saat melaksanan program Kampus Mengajar di sekolah sasaran. Ruang lingkup penelitian ini hanya terbatas pada satu sekolah sasaran dari program Kampus Mengajar Angkatan IV. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Data penelitian didapatkan menggunakan metode wawancara dan catatan lapangan. Responden berjumlah enam orang mahasiswa dari perguruan tinggi yang berbeda di Jakarta. Penelitian ini menemukan tiga kategori masalah yang dihadapi mahasiswa di sekolah sasaran yaitu: 1) masalah dalam bidang pengajaran, 2) masalah dalam bidang kelengkapan adminitrasi sekolah, dan 3) masalah dalam bidang teknologi. Penelitian ini menemukan fakta bahwa kegiatan program kampus mengajar yang dilakukan para mahasiswa sangat membantu para siswa meningkatkan kemampuan belajar mereka serta sangat membantu guru meningkatkan performa pengajaran mereka. Pelaksanaan program Kampus Mengajar oleh para mahasiswa sangat dirasakan manfaatnya oleh sekolah sasaran. Kata kunci: Kampus Mengajar, Permasalahan Mahasiswa, Solusi
