Abstract

ABSTRACT Taiwan Strait crises started when China conducted missiles trials near Taiwan sea on 1995-1996. China used missile trials as a form of deterrence to end Taiwan independent movement. The missile trials ended in 1996, however China established another deterrence move by preparing military army facing to Taiwan border. This is the main cause of Taiwan insecurity after the end of crises. Disparity military power between Taiwan and China has made Taiwan more insecure. This circumstance described on asymmetrical relations theory which explains that weak states tend to feel dilemma and paranoid when strong state takes an action because strong states has the capability to control situation. As a response, Taiwan had to initiate normalization with China to stabilize situation. Although for 50 years long, Taiwan had confidence for not making a contact with China. But Taiwan urgently needs to protect their national interest by initiating normalization. Keywords: Taiwan Strait crises, asymmetrical relations, normalization initiation, national interest.

Abstract

Thailand was one of the biggest cannabis producing countries in the world in the 80s. After signing the UN regulations on drugs (Narcotics, Psychotropics and Addictive Substances), Thailand made new regulations and strongly opposed the distribution of cannabis in the country. By implementing a "war on drugs" policy and a "zero tolerance" attitude, Thailand has had a history of the biggest human rights violations in ASEAN related to cannabis. After Thailand became the first country to ban cannabis use, now Thailand has become the first country to legalize marijuana for medical purposes in ASEAN. This study aims to analyze the reasons why the Government of Thailand implemented a policy of legalizing medical marijuana in 2019. Abstract

This research aims to explain the purpose of China’s decision to deploy the HYSY 981 oil rig on the contested waters of the Paracel Islands on 2014, using qualitative research methods. The theoretical framework used in this research consists of geopolitics theory and the concept of power projection. Policies are made to fulfill a state’s goal in accordance to Geopolitics, which is territorial expansion. To achieve this, China made a policy to project their power towards the Paracel Islands. However, China faces sustainability issues. This research then concludes that China’s purpose behind their decision on placing the HYSY 981 rig on the contested waters is to establish a reliable energy field for their power projection in the Paracels. The establishment of a reliable energy field would solve the sustainability issue that China is facing in projecting their military power towards the Paracel Islands.
