Abstract

Terdapat lima aspek yang dinilai yaitu orientation, registration, attention and calculation, recall, and language. KATA KUNCI: Kehilangan gigi, fungsi kognitif, lansiaRelationship between tooth loss count and cognitive function of the elderly with no dentures in Natuna: a cross-sectional studyABSTRACT            Introduction: Every individual will experience aging process which is a natural process of change including changes in the oral tissue. Dentition is one of the factors that plays an important role. WHO sets a standard that can be considered normal that the number of teeth for elderly people aged ≥ 60 years is  at least 20. Poor oral conditions are the cause of tooth loss in the elderly so that it can increase the risk of decreased cognitive function due to disruption of masticatory function. This study aimed to analyse the correlation between the number of teeth and cognitive function of the elderly, who do not use dentures. Methods: Observational analytic with cross-sectional design was conducted. Interviews with 53 respondents used MMSE to assess cognitive function ability and distinguish normal cognitive function, mild or severe cognitive impairment, as well as examination of the amount of tooth loss. There are five aspects assessed, namely orientation, registration, attention and calculation, recalling, and language. Results: The results showed that the older the age of the elderly, the more the number of tooth loss. Elderly people who experienced tooth loss > 12 pieces (88.67%) experienced mild to severe cognitive impairment, while elderly people who experienced tooth loss ≤ 12 pieces (11.32%) had normal cognitive function. Conclusions: Elderly people with no dentures in Natuna, and who had lost > 12 teeth tend to be more prone to decreased cognitive function.KEY WORDS: tooth loss, cognitive function, elderly

Abstract

Oral health contributes to individual's physical, mental, and social well-being and significantly impacts their quality of life. Preventing oral diseases and promoting oral health contribute to overall well-being, enhancing their quality of life. Community-level or population-based prevention is the most cost-effective approach with the greatest impact on communities or populations, whether in schools or neighborhoods. Oral health education aims to enhance overall knowledge, potentially leading to the adoption of beneficial oral health behaviors. The provision of oral health education is expected to elevate public knowledge and awareness, enabling individuals to maintain or enhance their oral health and thus improve their quality of life. Offline activities involving oral health education were conducted through presentations on May 7th, 2023, at Giova’s Garden, Bogor. Various topics, including dental radiographic examination, primary management of dental trauma, dental prosthesis rehabilitation, oral health in children, and tips for maintaining oral health while driving, were presented to enhance participants' knowledge about oral health. The community engagement activity proceeded smoothly. Similar activities are anticipated to be carried out again with pre-test and post-test assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of the education provided.
