Abstract

Literary texts create imaginary or figured worlds which might engage readers. Readers engaging in imaginary or figured worlds may develop new identities. Even though readers engage in the literary texts directly, they also have indirect relationship with authors in this process. This paper draws on some influential theories such as reader response, figured worlds, and identity theories. The interaction between reader and text is dialogic; the meaning of a text depends on the transaction between readers and the text they read. On the readers’ part, they always bring their history-in-person. This influences the meaning of the text. In the end, the act of reading is an act of identity making or remaking in figured worlds. Readers shape and reshape their identity in both real and imaginary worlds

Abstract

This paper focuses on how to motivate my struggling students for whom English is a second language when they read canonical texts written in English. Students in English departments are required to read English canonical texts, but most of them find this task very challenging. One strategy teachers can use to motivate students to read is to pair the English canonical texts with young adult texts. Important in these instructional choices are the pre-reading, during-reading, and after-reading activities. Pre-reading activities are intended to prepare readers to enter the story world During-reading activities are important to make students understand the stories better. Some of the duringactivities include using role plays and teaching media to increase students' understanding of the characters and the plots in the books. In the post-reading activities, students can write journals or quotes they find interesting from the book. Giving students more varieties in book choices and activities can, hopefully, make them independent good readers.

Abstract

Wayang kulit or shadow puppet theater performance has been greatly changing. Changes occur in many aspects such as in terms of the duration or length of the peliormance, its structure, the number of dalang who performs it,as well as the number of female singers (sindhen or waranggana) who accompany the dalang. Consequently, now wayang kulit performance is seen more as tontonan (entertainment) than as tuntunan (moral teachings). One of the main factors of this big change is the intrusion of western culture into Indonesia in general and Java in particular. This results in the reluctance of the young, especially, in watching this form of traditional art. Therefore, the changers) in the performance of wayang kulit or shadow theater is one of the efforts to make thisform of traditional art survive.

Abstract

This thesis with a title The Aggressive Jack Torrance in The Shining by Stephen King: A Psychological Analysis. This thesis is a literature study of with the help of psychological theory as a tool to examine the story. Wellek and Warren (1949) opinion about the connection of psychology and literature is the foundation of this thesis. They found out that there is a connection between two of the study, because both of them analyze human being as their subject of study. The theories that writer borrows from psychology discipline are: Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of needs that divide human needs into class. This needs have to be fulfilled in order to function properly as a human being. Second theory in this thesis is called Stress and Coping which explains the definition of stress according to Lazarus and Folkman. The last theory is Frustration-Aggression by John Dollard that describes the aggressive reaction of a frustrated person that cannot attain their goal. The method used in this research is qualitative. Data of this research is from the novel and the film. Several books are used as references to analyze the data and support this research. In collecting data, the writer uses the technique of reading the book and watching the film repeatedly to find out the contents of the story. In this study, the writer learn what happen to Jack Torrance character in The Shining with the aid of Psychological theory. According to Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of needs, a human being has to fulfill his needs in order to function properly.
