Abstract

ABSTRACTThis paper is aimed at analyzing tragedy in a play entitled Desire Under the Elms portraying the primitive desires that influence several characters of the afore-mentioned play in the 1920s New England, and also that in a Javanese chronicle account of Rara Oyi that happened during the reign of Sunan Amangkurat I from 1646 to 1677 in the kingdom of Islamic Mataram.   Tragedy discussed in this paper is an occurrence that involves people of high status or people of high nobility, as well as ordinary people, who suffer and whose lives lead to their downfall partly because of the trouble they are unable to get rid of. The play Desire Under the Elms portrays tragedy that takes place among ordinary people, while the Javanese Chronicle story of Rara Oyi depicts tragedy of Rara Oyi, an ordinary but beautiful young lady vied by two noblemen, the king Sunan Amangkurat I of the kingdom of Islamic Mataram and his own crown prince, Pangeran Adipati Anom alias Prince Tejaningrat.   The analysis focuses on comparing the tragedy that befall either the protagonists or the antagonists in both the play and the chronicle account mentioned above. It turns out that their lives are in ruins due to their fate as they are not able to realize their dream of living with the lady they are madly in love with and wish to marry.

A compilation of short stories written by Alexander McCall Smith entitled The Girl Who Married a Lion and the translation by Sari Kusuma entitled Gadis yang Menikahi Seekor Singa is interesting to discuss because it contains many stories, including fairy tales and fables. Hence, the short stories are fully loaded with cultural aspect, which thereby affects the way the work is translated. Thus, this article is to reveal the translation types, structure, and strategies applied by the translator in translating the short stories. Keywords: translation types, translation strategy, Alexander McCall

It belongs to library research, with Gillian Flynn's novel as the subject and the aspects of jealousy the object. Since it is about the human psyche, a psychological approach was employed. Further, the theories of jealousy were used to analyze the data and to answer the research questions. The analysis resulted in several findings. First, Amy Dunne, the main character, was found to be a brilliant and cunning person. Her personality, triggered by jealousy, manifests in her actions throughout the story. Second, Amy Dunne is extremely jealous of her husband. She finds out that Nick, her husband, has an affair with another woman, and the feeling leads to several incidents. Amy disappears, fakes various crime that leads the public to hate her husband, and finally returns home. Amy also kills a man to cover her lies; all were done without anyone's suspicion. It is recommended that the next researchers explore the characters of the story more profoundly or employ the work as one alternative material in ELT class.

Abstract

The learning process in vocational schools has different characteristics compared to that of the non-vocational. Students’ readiness is one significant variable in determining students’ learning success. Hence, identifying the antecedent of the variable is necessary. The research aimed to measure the contribution of academic supervision through teachers' professional and pedagogic competence and its impact on vocational school students’ learning readiness. The quantitative research employed ex-post facto design with partial least square equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to test the hypothesis. Non-probability sampling, particularly purposive sampling, was used to take the samples, which were 71 teachers and 96 students in three private vocational schools in Gunung Kidul Regency, Indonesia. Meanwhile, the data were analyzed using PLS-SEM because the study involved less than 100 samples. The results showed pedagogic competence contributes to learning readiness, professional competence does not contribute to learning readiness, academic supervision contributes to pedagogic competence, and academic supervision contributes to professional competence. Besides, indirect effect scores concluded two points: academic supervision through teachers’ professional competence contributes to learning readiness and academic supervision through a teacher’s professional competence does not contribute to learning readiness. The principals and teachers can use the findings to improve their performance at school and in the classroom.
