Abstract

The study examined occupational stress and job engagement among library personnel at selected Nigerian state and federal universities. A descriptive survey methodology was employed in the study. This study used questionnaires for ascertaining work engagement and occupational stress to survey 76 respondents. Results indicated that library personnel experienced high occupational stress, which displayed significantly low levels of job engagement. In contrast, those with a low level of occupational stress showed significantly increased levels of engagement at work. The data suggested that female library personnel reported experiencing more occupational stress than male library personnel and the mean difference was statistically significant, t (74) = -3.416, p =.001. The limitation of this research includes the smallness of sample size, which calls for a larger sample to validate the findings further. Rational emotive behavioral therapy can be adapted for managing the levels of work engagement and occupational stress in librarians.

Abstract

The increase in the frequency, duration and dependence of individuals using smartphones in the last decade has resulted in a phenomenon of mental health disorders in the form of problematic smartphone usage. This study aims to analyze the causes of problematic smartphone usage based on the conditions of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), loneliness, virtual presence, and future time perspectives. This study uses a quantitative approach through survey methods and uses a cross-sectional study method and post-positivism assumptions to look at the factors that cause dependent variables. In this study, 597 students were involved, with 290 males (48.57%) and 307 females (51.43%). Path analysis was used in the analysis of this study to determine the impact of the direct and indirect effects of exogenous variables on endogenous variables. Path analysis is also used in mapping and testing the hypotheses that make up the model. The study results show that the virtual presence, loneliness, and future time perspective variables impact individuals' emergence of FOMO conditions, which in turn contributes to the formation of problematic smartphone usage. The study of the direct and indirect relationships of the variables is discussed.

Abstract

The exploration of students' potential and learning capacities may provide deeper insights into their characteristics and serve as a foundation for providing practical career guidance, especially for those with specific learning disabilities (SLDs). This article presents an examination of career counselling models and services for students with SLDs. The chosen methodology for this research was a narrative literature review. Some examples of career counselling models discussed in this article include the trait-and-factor model, the client-centered career counselling model, and the faith-based career counselling model. The provision of career counselling services to students with SLDs was addressed, including aspects such as choosing a career and promoting a balance between their professional and personal lives. Career counselling models provide counsellors with a practical framework for implementing career counselling with students. These models are particularly valuable in offering practical career assistance to students with SLDs. It is advisable for career counsellors to acquire a deeper understanding of the experiential worldviews held by students with specific learning disabilities, recognise the potential impact of these disabilities on students' sense of self, and formulate interventions aimed at facilitating these students' adaptation to the educational environment and professional settings. Students with specific SLDs who use career counselling services are afforded the chance to develop a professional identity that is in congruence with the demands of the current job market.
