Abstract

This study aimed to discover and explained the depression of the main characters in Suzan Lori Parks play script entitled ‘’Topdog/Underdog’’ and this study was hoped to be utilized by further researcher. The data sources used in this study was the play script of ‘’Topdog/Underdog’’. In analyzing the data, the writer used descriptive qualitative research method through psychoanalysis approach. Data were obtained by using the techniques of reading, noting, and analyzing. While in classifying the data, the writer used Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis and analyzed the symptoms of the depressions used Bhowmik and Beck theory. After analyzing the data, the writer found that the drama script of suzan lori parks entitled ‘’Topdog/Underdog’’ contains 23 data of depressions were devided into 32 parts consists of 22 data of ID, 5 data of Ego and 5 data of Superego. While the data used 2 types of symptoms which emotional symptoms with 22 data and 1 cognitive symptom. From the data above it can be said that the most dominant data were Id and Cognitive symptoms.

Abstract

The aims of the research are to find out the assimilation portrayed through the characters in the novel and to describe the impact of assimilation occurred towards the characters. The research applied the library research to get as many data from the novel and some books containing theories which connect to the research. The primary data was taken from Margaret Dilloway’s Novel “How to be an American Housewife”. The data was analyzed by using sociological approach and the theory of assimilation by Milton Gordon. The result shows that in the novel How to be an American Housewife can be found three models of assimilation. There are the classic and new assimilation model, the racial or disadvantaged model, and the segmented assimilation model. Besides that, Assimilation process give the big impacts towards the main character in the novel, Shoko and her daughter who grow up in the culture of American. The impacts cover almost all of life aspects of the Shoko then make her has no choice. She wants or not, like or dislike she has to accept the American culture and reduce her culture. She has to face many difficulties in daily life.

Abstract

The aims of the research are to find out and to examine the characters in the drama consider politeness principle when they make dialogue to others, especially in imperative dialogue, politeness types and strategy used by charactersm and factors that influence use of politeness principle. This research is library research by applying qualitative descriptive method and through pragmatic study. By use pragmatic study, the writer has to understand and pay attention well context of the dialogue in the drama. In this study the dialogue of the drama assumed as speech act and characters assumed as speech participant. The writer used Dell Hymes’ theory (1974)to analysis context of the dialogue. The writer also uses politeness principle theory of Geoffrey Leech (1983) and Speech acts theory of J.R. Searle (1969) to analysis the data. The result shows that the characters of the drama consider politeness principle when make imperative dialogue in specific setting. Most of the dialogues indicate applying politeness principle. Strategies that always applied are indirect scale, optionality scale, authority scale and cost-benefit scale. Significant factors that influence and determine the use of politeness principle are social background of participant or character, setting and scene, and end of speech or dialogue.
