Abstract

This Study aims to identify the type of politeness principle used by the character in the novel and to find out how the politeness principle that was used by the characters in the novel. The data source of the study is the novels In H.G Well’s The War of The World. In analyzing the data, the researcher used qualitative descriptive method and Maxim’s theory. Data were obtained by using the techniques of reading and analyzing. In this study, researcher found 19 data using 6 types of leech theory, namely tact maxim, modesty maxim, approbation maxim, agreement maxim, sympathy maxim, and generosity maxim. In using tact maxim the characters express it in a sincere way, in using modesty Maxim the characters used it by reducing self-praise, in using approbation maxim characters use it in a polite way of praising someone. The agreement maxim used by the characters for asking permission and agreeing, while sympathy maxim used by characters to to keep the people feeling, and generosity maxim for praising someone.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the structure of interrogative sentences between East Manggarai Language And English also to find the contrast of interrogative sentences  between East Manggarai Language And English.This research is a descriptive qualitative research with the sample of native speakers of East Manggarai language in Satar Punda Village, East Manggarai language, NTT. The method used is contrastive method purposed by Tarigan and using sentence function theory from Hariyono & Rahman for analyzed the Interrogative sentence in the form of Yes/No question. Then used the theory purposed by Azar to find the sentence function and the sentence pattern in the form of Wh-Question and also Question Tag.The results of this research indicated that there was a dominant difference in language use between East Manggarai and English, namely in terms of sentence structure where the placement of the interrogative words used has a very significant difference. One of the data found in the interrogative sentence in East Manggarai language is a Yes/No Question sentence, which generally has a predicate and also subject at the beginning of the sentence and ends with the Question word (koh, teh, teh gah, neh, etc). Meanwhile, in English the interrogative sentences structure is generally preceded by a Question word (Am, Is, Are, and Do, Does, Did, etc). In addition, the verb in the East Manggarai language also can not undergo changes and get modification because they were not influenced by adverbs. While, the verb in English can undergo changes depending on the word convention and also the context in the sentence.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of rebellion principle used and how the rebellion portrayed used in the poem Howl by Allen Gisnberg. The data source used in this research is the poem Howl. In analyzing the data, the writer used a qualitative descriptive research method through a sociological approach. The data were obtained by using reading, collecting, and analyzing techniques and to classify the types of rebellion principle in the poem by Jhon Lewis Gillin and Jhon Philip Gillin’s theory. The result of this research were 26 data that contain types of rebellion principle where 7 data of assimilation, 2 data of accommodation, 2 data of acculturation, 8 data of contravention, 4 data of competition and 3 data of conflict. There are 6 types with 26 data and an explanation of rebellion portrayed in this research poem, but the types and portrayed that are more prominent are negative because the researcher finds a lot of war, capitalism, consumerism, deceit, torture, and murder physically and mentally. Evil America has turned the lives of the lower classes into a terrible and nightmare.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the type of epistemic modality most frequently used and also to determine the speaker's attitude towards his editorial. The level of editorial confidence in the written editorial can be seen by looking at the use of verb modals which is epistemic modality. The writer assesses modality based on qualitatif method to describe the speaker’s attitude and quantitative to determine the type of modality that is the most often used. The data collection procedure was sourced from newspaper and used 43 editorial texts as the research sample. The results of this study found that the type of epistemic modality most often used was the assumptive type which reached 61,8%. The second is the speculative type with a percentage of 26,4%. The third is deductive type with a percentage of 8,9%. And the fourth is concessive type with a percentage of 2,9%. Apart from that, this study also found that the speaker's attitude was doubtful about his proposition when based only on possible conclusions. The speaker's attitude is confident in his proposition when it is based on a sound conclusion. The speaker's attitude of being confident and believing what is necessity to do is based on the only possible conclusion. And the speaker predicts something to be true when the speaker has evidence that contrasts with the proposition.
