Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of love and hate in the short story “The Mother” by W. Somerset Maugham. The problem question is: How does the author describe love and hate in this novel. The focus of this research is about love and hate and elements of literature that are built in short stories. As a literary work, this analysis uses a descriptive research design that is used to describe the data based on the findings obtained in statements related to love and hate in short stories. The main data is the short story "The Mother" supported by secondary data obtained from various sources, books, magazines and author biographies. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found that the author described the love in this short story as the love of Eros and Agape. Eros love is described as a relationship due to physical attraction between a man and a woman and vice versa. The main love depicted is the Agape type of love. Although this type of love is a love that does not prioritize itself, it is described as an unusual mother's love for her child. Does not want her child to get another love, but only wants her child for herself. As for hate, the author describes a person's excessive hatred because of his love for his child, the mother becomes hateful, emotional and does not like other people so that the peak of the hatred is realized by taking the lives of others.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to explore the effectiveness of using animated video in teaching descriptive writing at the fifth semester students of English Education study program of Khairun University. This research employed quantitative descriptive method from which the data of the test are taken from pre and posttest. 20 respondents were chosen by purposive sampling technique to be involved in this research. The data collection technique in this study was a test prior to teach writing using animated video and a posttest after that. From the data analysis of pretest, the respondent obtained the average score of 59.58 whereas their posttest score was 76.18. The score raised 16.60 points from the first to the second test. Overall, using animated video was proved effective in teaching descriptive writing at the fifth semester students of English education study program.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which storytelling using video in improving students' speaking skills at SMA Negeri 5 Ternate City. This study used a quantitative method with a t-test, with a sample of 20 students of grade ten students from class X-E. The instrument of this research was pretest and posttest to collect data. The results of this study indicate that the posttest average value is 70.05 higher than the pretest average value of 51.15. The results indicated that students average score of speaking skill were still low before researcher implemented retelling story technique. The t-test value of 12,857 is higher than the t-table value of 1,729 at a significance level of  0,05 with 19 degrees of freedom. This means that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. In conclusion, the use of retelling stories is effective for improving students' speaking skills at SMA Negeri 5 Ternate City.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the students' speaking skill through the medium of animated short movie that will retold by students. The sample of this research was 20 students from X grade of SMA Negeri 1 Ternate City. The method in this research was mixed method. The instrument used in this research was a short movie entitled "The Present". The data were analyzed by using the speaking scoring rubric by calculating student scores individually and looking for the total score. The data was presented in the form of descriptions, tables and graph. Based on the results obtained from the research, the speaking ability of X grade students of SMA Negeri 1. Ternate City is in Average level with the total score was 52. The results score of students' abilities in the grammatical aspect of speaking was 47, in the vocabulary aspect was 55, on the comprehension aspect was 58, on the fluency aspect was 52, and on the pronunciation aspect was 48. Based on these results, it is suggested that students should practice speaking in English both outside and inside the classroom in order to improve their ability to understand and master the aspects of speaking English. Teachers are advised to pay more attention to students' speaking skills and provide opportunities for students by creating various interesting activities that allow students to practice their speaking skills in English.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the factors contribute students’ anxiety in leaning English and their strategies to reduce the anxiety. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The subject of the research were 40 students of the second semester of the English Language Education study Program Khairun University. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interview. The result of this research show that most of the students are at “Anxious” level students. There are 18 (45%) students who experience “Anxious” level, 10 (25%) students are in “Mildly Anxious” level, 9 (22.5%) students are in “Very anxious’ level, 2 (5%) students are in “very relaxed”, an the last 1 (2.5%) students are in “relaxed” level. Furthermore, there were three factors can cause anxiety based on FLCAS, which included communication apprehension (CA), test anxiety, and fear of negative evolution and there were five strategies that the students can use to minimize their anxiety which included preparation, relaxion, positive thingking, peer seeking, resignation.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the understanding of medical students about English medical terminology. This study used descriptive quanitative method. There were 21 medical students at Khairun Ternate University who were involved in this research. By using purposive sampling technique. . Data was collected by using a test and questioner via google form. Of the 21 students, only 4 students got good grades, the other 17 were very low. The results of this study indicate the average value of students is 49.7 in the poor category.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the competence of third semester students in pronouncing imperative sentences. This research took place at the English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Khairun Ternate. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to explain and describe students’ competence of the third semester of the English education study program in pronouncing imperative sentences. There were 30 students who participating in this study. The technique data collection used the observation and took audio recording from each student. The technique data analysis used pronunciation application and google translate. It was found out that 22 students (73.33%) obtained excellent score. Then seven students (23.33%) obtained good score. And one student (3.33%) test result is sufficient score. In summary, the average score of students in pronouncing English imperative sentences is excellent with a total average score of 84.74.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the students “obstacles in speaking skills. This research was conducted offline and distributed questionnaires to students. The subject in this study were fifteen students in fifth semester at the English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University. This study used a qualitative method and a questionnaire was used as an instrument to obtain the necessary data. The data analysis technique is descriptive analysis. From the results of the data, it shows that the fifth semester students experience problems in speaking English fluently they cannot acquire vocabulary properly, the lack vocabulary and are unable to use parts of speaking English fluently.
