This article describes strategies to promote collaboration applied by students when expressing disagreements. By using Conversational Analysis (CA), the researcher collected and analyzed data from fourteen doctorate classroom discussions. The results show that the students applied four ways of acknowledging peers during disagreements. Suggestions are put forward at the end of the article.

Abstract: This study is a part of a larger research project, by a team of English Language Training for Islamic Schools (ELTIS), into the resources used in MTs. This paper talks about the needs of Islamic Junior High Schools (Madrasah Tsanawiyah, henceforth, MTs) for ELT materials. The research involved a number of principals, teachers and students of MTs in two areas: East Java and West Nusa Tenggara. Presentation and discussion of the analysis of the needs will be followed with some suggestions addressing some major weaknesses in the resources currently available in MTs.

Abstract: The present paper discusses an English teachers questions in Reading classes at MAN Malang III. Types of questions, functions of teachers questions, question levels and the strategies applied by the teacher were put as the research problems. Non-participant observaÃÂtion was applied to collect the data with the researcher as the main inÃÂstrument aided by field-notes and a tape recorder. It was found that the distribution of the questions did not allow the students to talk longer and to think more analytically. Meanwhile, the strategies applied by the teacher helped the students to respond to the questions previously unanswered. The teacher is suggested to produce more open and referÃÂential question as well as inference and evaluation questions as to give more chances for the students to think aloud more.

The present study focuses on the languages operating on the written signage that contribute directly to theformation of the linguistic landscape. The study chose Sunan Ampel Tomb in Surabaya, Indonesia, as one ofthe sites that has become a heritage conservation due to the history hidden in the site. This site is a part of the other sites in a series leading to the history of nine saints (Wali Songo) who brought Islam to Indonesia through one of the islands, Java. The study aimed at describing the linguistic landscape of the site to help learn about the languages operating on the signage found in Sunan Ampel Tomb complex and the hidden history leading to multilingual multilingualism in the area. By using a direct observation and interview to gather the data,the study informs that the sites are typically dominated with Indonesian language operating in monolingualsignage. Despite a few in number, the multilingual signage can still be found to depict several languages including English, Arabic, and Indonesian language. The domination of Bahasa Indonesian demonstrates the implementation of policy for using the language as the national language. While English and Arabic are used for the business purpose. The study also discovers the characteristics of the language displaying on the signage from the size of the fonts. In conclusion, linguistic landscape in Sunan Ampel Tomb describes the history of how the saint brought Islam to the society. Arabic artifacts stereotyping Islam existence can hardly be found here, and it becomes a proof the saint taught Islam without trying to change the already existing customs, cultures, and languages as well.

Several factors determine the effectiveness of language learning, one of which is the variety of strategies carried out by the teacher in the teaching and learning process. Defined as any efforts made to maximize the learning achievements, strategy encompasses material development, classroom management, and teaching techniques. The question is in what ways the teacher implements such a variety, and what the effect is.This descriptive study was conducted in an in-service teacher training which aimed to improve the traineesâ€™ mastery of ELT strategies and the teaching language. The data were collected using questionnaires, observation, documentation, interviews, and reflection. The subjects were the trainers and the teacher trainees who have mixed language abilities and teaching experiences.The findings show a range of varieties was employed during the training process, covering the use of diverse materials, fun classroom activities, learner-centered approach, affect-lowering classroom management, and varied interaction patterns. As effective learning is dependent on the fresh minds, teachers should always strive to prevent their students from exhausting monotony.

African American English and slang are now become interesting topics among linguists for its unique characteristics and usage in daily society as vernacular language. This paper analyses the use of African merican English and slang used by an African American and a Caucasian American in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn novel. Findings propose that African American English and slang are particulary used by African American speakers as their daily language, but non African Americans may choose this variety as their language choice.

The present study aims to describe the types of presuppositions contained in mobile phone advertisement and to describe the functions of presuppositions contained in mobile phone advertisement. The descriptive will describe and interpret phenomena related to presuppositions. The analysis of the mobile phone advertisements shows that the most dominant type of presuppositions found in selected slogans is lexical presuppositions. In terms of the functions of presuppositions in the advertisement, committing in implicit competition and making the advertisement short and memorable is the functions which are most frequently used.

The present paper aims at describing linguistic features of two women who have two different characteristics ” feminine and less feminine” as apparent in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and The Lover dramas. Using Robin Lakoff's (1975) women's linguistic features, the research found out that not all features occur in the dialogues of the two female characters with other characters. Nine features were applied by Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf drama and seven features were used by Sarah in The Lover. Based on the analysis of the data, it is uncovered that the use of the women's linguistic features reflects uncertainty and lacking confidence on the part of the women in their conversation.

This study is meant to investigate the ways of male and female criminals express types of verbal disagreeing strategies in Detective Conan movie series. To collect the data, 30 criminals (15 males, 15 females) were selected among hundreds of criminals appeared in the movie. The criminals were expected to disagree with 6 chosen interlocutors when they do debate over the accusation pointed to the criminals. The types of disagreeing strategies which help the researcher to analyze the disagreeing strategies in criminals are based on Muntigl and Turnbull taxonomy (in Behnam & Niroomand, 2011:208). Qualitative content analysis is chosen to examine the criminals' disagreeing strategies. The results show that male criminals performed more disagreeing strategies by applying 56 disagreements, and female criminals applied 48 disagreements. From those disagreements, it is found new types of disagreeing strategies in addition to the types from the taxonomy of Muntigl and Turnbull (in Behnam & Niroomand, 2011:208)

Linguistic landscape research has been administered in different parts of the world by several researchers. However, linguistic landscape research in Indonesia is still limited in number. To respond to the scarcity of linguistic landscape study in Indonesia, the present research discusses the visible languages, proportions of top-down and bottom-up signs in Sidoarjo City. The functions of the signs are also identified.Data were collected from signs in some public places and along the main streets of Sidoarjo City.The results of the study show that the linguistic landscape is dominated by Indonesian. English is used more often than Arabic. Javanese as the mother tongue for the majority of the society of Sidoarjo is rarely used. Some other Asian languages are also apparent in the shopping centers. Description and explanation of the functions of the signs are also presented.
