Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the influence of seating arrangement toward students’ participation in learning English, focused on clusters model and pairs model of seating arrangement at the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Barru. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative method. Collecting the data of this research used observation checklist and video recorded during learning process in the classroom. The result of this research found that clusters model made mostly the students unconcerned in responded the material caused of the group consisted more than two students. Meanwhile, pairs model made the students more enthusiastic in responded the material caused of the students’ engagement is tied together. It could be seen in the percentage of students’ activeness which indicated that there was 64.6% students’ participation in clusters model and 77.5 % students’ partisipation in pairs model of seating arrangement during in learning process. It means that, every seating arrangement had different influence toward students’ active participation in learning English at the classroom.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out how the students' skills in using subject-verb agreement in writing essays. This research method is descriptive quantitative method. The research data was collected through the writing test as an instrument. The sample of this research was the fifth-semester students of English Education at the Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. The sample was taken by using simple random sampling. Based on the analysis and discussion about this research, the researcher concluded the researcher concluded that the students' ability to use the subject-verb agreement in the fifth semester students of English Education at the Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar was categorized into very good level with a score was 88.24. This value is obtained based on the results of the scores of all students that are divided into the number of students who are the samples of this study. From 35 students, there were 7 students whose mastery levels were excellent, 16 students gained a very good level, 8 students whose mastery levels were good, 3 students gained a good level, 1 student gained a fair level, and no student gained a poor level. Moreover, the last level is very poor and no student gained this level.

Abstract

Analyzing the Challenges of English Teachers in Facing Students' Affective Competencies at SMA 1 Muhammadiyah Makassar Thesis Department of English, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar. Supervised by Nunung Anugrawati and Ardiana. This study was conducted to determine the purpose of the study, namely to describe Challenges of English Teachers in Facing Students' Affective Competencies at SMA 1 Muhammadiyah Makassar. The subjects in this study were teachers of SMA 1 Muhammadiyah Makassar. The purpose of this study is to find out what challenges are faced by English teachers in dealing with students' affective competence. The instruments used to collect data are observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis in this study is Analysis (QDA), Data Reduction, and Data Display.The results showed that the challenges of the English teacher in dealing with students' affective competence consisted of two factors, namely internal factors and external factors. The strategy used by the English teacher in dealing with students' infective competence is to make learning methods, namely the discussion method and the game method.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the teachers’ strategies in overcoming student’ anxiety in speaking English and students’ perception toward the strategies used by the teacher to overcome student’ anxiety in speaking English at SMAN 1 Gowa. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data was collected through observation checklist and semi-structured interview. The participants were the English teachers and students of at SMAN 1 Gowa. The researcher took 6 students from 3 classes; the X IPS1, XI IPA1, and XII IPA5 class and there English teachers.The findings showed about the teachers’ strategies to overcome students’ anxiety in speaking English and students’ perceptions toward the strategies used by the teachers. First, there were three strategies that were used by the teachers. The teacher who teaches at X IPS1 (T1) used playing games strategy, the teacher two who teaches at XI IPA1 (T2) used question and answer strategy, and the last teacher who teacher at XII IPA5 (T3) used guess word strategy in overcoming students’  anxiety in speaking English. Second, every single students who became respondents in this research said that they agree with the strategies used by the teacher can overcome their anxiety in speaking English.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe the kinds of classroom interaction take place between teacher and student and describes what is the most dominant talk take place in classroom interaction based on the Flanders Class Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS).This research used descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study are the interaction between teacher and students in the classroom. The data were taken by recording the classroom interaction. The subject of this research was 17 students and one English Teacher. The researcher used observation for techniques of collecting data. Flanders Interaction Analysis used to identify and analyze teacher and students interaction in classroom.Based on the result of this study, it could be concluded there are 10 categories of interaction, 7 categories of teacher talk, such as accepts feelings, praises or encourage, accepts or uses students ideas, asking question, lecturing, giving directions, criticizing or justifying authority; 2 categories of students talk namely students talk response and students talk initiation and 1 category of silence. The researcher concludes that the teacher was dominant in the classroom. It proved by the percentage of teacher talk was 58.70% than students talk was 30.34%, and the kinds of classroom interaction, the students participation was 30.34% has higher percentage than others and silence was 10.94%.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether online based-learning (e-learning) affects students' covert behavior in English lessons at SMAN 1 Barru and explain the impact of online based-learning (e-learning) on students' covert behavior in English lessons at SMAN 1 Barru.  The population of this study was students of SMAN 1 BARRU.   This research is a descriptive study. The disguised behavior of social studies students of class XI SMA N 1 Barru falls into the category of less tingi with a percentage52,14% Judging from the results of the hypothesis test (t-test) obtained a calculation of 1.363 < ttabel 1.692 and a significant value of the implementation of e-Learning 0.182 > 0.05. The R value of 0.231 or 23.1% which means that the influence of the implementation of online-based learning (e-Learning) on student behavior covert is 23.1% while 76.9% is influenced by other variables that are not studied. With this, the implementation of online-based learning (e-learning) has no significant effect on the formation of covert behavior of students at SMAN 1 Barru.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether or not the use of paragraph graphic organizer from Brain POP can improve the writing ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Datuk ribandang. The subjects of this research consisted of 54 students and it was divided into 2 classes, 27 students for control classand 27 students for experimental class at the eleventh grade of SMA Datuk Ribandang. The method that was used by the researcher in this research was quasi-experimental design which involved two classes with different treatment, namely experimental class and control class. The instruments used for collecting data namely writing test.  The result of the data indicated that, the use of graphic organizer from BrainPop is effective than conventional (free writing) technique in improving students’ writing ability. Graphic organizer from BrainPop helps to make easier for the students in improving their writing ability. It is proved by the hypothesis result where p value (0.000) is smaller than α value (0.05). And it is also proved by the mean score of pre-test and post-test in experimental class and control class. It shows that pre-test mean score in experimental class is bigger than control class both content (24.44 > 22.22), organization (20.55 > 20.37), language use (23.52 > 21.29) and Writing Ability (68.51 > 63.88). Then, post-test mean score in experimental class is bigger than control class both content (33.15 > 29.07), organization (28.88 > 27.78), language use (31.48 > 27.03) and writing ability (93.51 > 83.88).It means that graphic organizer helps the students in increasing their writing ability and also can be an effective tool used in the writing process.
