Abstract

Abstract. Lingual elements in the form of proverbs are often found in German textbooks. Proverbs can be a medium to understand the cultural background of the German language because it reflects the culture, values, and mindset of the speaking community. However, proverbs have not been widely studied in terms of their meaning and equivalent in  Indonesian. This research aims to examine the form of German proverbs in German textbooks and find the equivalent of Indonesian proverbs based on their meaning, figurative elements, and cultural backgrounds. This research is qualitative research with a literature study. The data source of this research is the German language textbooks used in universities in Indonesia. The data collected are German proverbs in phrases or sentences and analyzed morphologically and semantically to find their equivalent in Indonesian. The research instrument is the human instrument. Data collection is done by reading and note-taking techniques. The data’s validity is obtained by reading the data repeatedly and discussed in the Focus Group Discussion. The research findings showed that very few German proverbs have the same meaning and figurative elements as Indonesian. However, there are German proverbs that have the same meaning as Indonesian proverbs but have different figurative elements. In addition, there are German proverbs that do not have Indonesian equivalents. Abstract

Many online translation machines can translate more than 100 languages, including German into Indonesian and vice versa. However, the accuracy and standardization of the results still need to be investigated. This study aims to identify language errors in the translation of German texts into Indonesian using Google Translate and Bing Translator. This research is a descriptive qualitative research based on language error analysis. The data is derived from 12 German news articles published by Deutsche Welle. These German texts were translated into Indonesian using these two machine translators. The translated texts were analyzed for language errors at the semantic, morphological, and syntactic levels. The results of this study show that there are still language errors at the semantic, morphological, and syntactic levels in the translated texts produced by Google Translate and Bing Translator. Both translation machines tend to translate the text word for word. A translation result is an initial form of translation that needs to be edited to obtain an accurate translation.

Abstract

Background: Gender has become a crucial area of research due to the unpleasant experience of gender disparity in the workplace, home, and other settings, including education, health, and civic engagement. The ideal way to promote gender equality early on is to guarantee everyone access to a high-quality education. The learning process is greatly aided by textbooks. Through language, visuals, stories, and illustrations, gender content is developed and represented in books. Given that the textbook serves as the primary means of instruction, it is crucial to examine how gender is constructed in Kontakte Deutsch 1, the widely used textbook in Indonesia. Methodology: A descriptive qualitative methodology was used in this study's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The research data source was from illustrations, words, and stories in the textbook Kontakte Deutsch 1. Findings: The results showed that male and female figures appeared visually at the same frequency. In categories like social roles, passions, and professional choices, gender equality was noted and portrayed. Inequalities such as stereotyping, gender subordination, and marginalization of gender were still present in a tiny proportion of phrases and narratives. Conclusion: This study demonstrated how the authors of Kontakte Deutsch 1 made an effort to advance gender equality principles through linked topics. Gender discrimination only appeared in a minor portion of the story. Originality: There have been no studies on gender reconstruction in Kontakte Deutsch 1, commonly used in Indonesian high schools. This thorough investigation deepens our understanding of how gender is portrayed in instructional materials and emphasizes the significance of treating all genders equally and respectfully.
