Abstract

The millennial murshid comprises young tariqah leaders, who are well-versed in the latest information technology. Sufism identity has changed under the millennial murshid due to the development of information technology and their participation in social media which tries to revive the doctrine and ritual in the changing global reality. This condition has fostered Sufistic activism in a new direction from a “quiet road” to a “public road” in cyberspace. This article has explored the intersection between Sufism and social media based on the narration of the millennial murshid of Tariqa Naqshabandiyya-Khalidiya Serambi Babussalam. The findings illustrate that the phenomenon of virtual Sufism that has emerged from the intersection between Sufism and social media has given birth to a new expression of piety called as virtual piety. It is a simplification of piety from the original form of Sufistic tradition that emphasizes symbolic-esoteric aspects and is likely as opposed to individual piety. Additionally, the millennial murshid has successfully used social media, particularly Facebook, to reach out to the online community and gain followers.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a critical review of a dissertation on the unification of tarekat in Indonesia. To understand how critical review works, a summary will be made of the dissertation that is used as the object of study. The critical review work step is carried out by trying to present an overview of the dissertation that will be critically reviewed to provide an overview of the material being analyzed. Content analysis is a characteristic of this study, with which opinion interpretations are carried out. The findings of the study explain that this dissertation explains that the Sufistic thoughts of Ahmad Khatib Sambas are considered unique compared to other Sufis, because Ahmad Khatib Sambas succeeded in combining two large orders, namely the Qadiriyah and Naqsyabandiyah Orders which then taught them separately. Apart from that, this tarekat has a quite prominent spirit of activism, as evidenced by several resistance movements against colonialism sponsored by followers of the Qadiriyah and Naqsyabandiyah Tarekat. The results of the critical review show that this research has not succeeded in answering what is at the core of the research problem. The research findings presented are too broad, so they do not focus on the main discussion. In addition, this study also failed to present novelty from previous studies.

Abstract

This article provides updated information on the tarekat following the entrepreneurial bankruptcy in the Tarekat Naqsybandiyah-Khalidiyah Babussalam (TNKB). This study charts the TNKB trend regarding the spiritual institution’s economic toughness. This research asks how TNKB will be able to continue operating if its founder no again walks away from entrepreneurs and what other economies may emerge in his place. Findings from the study show that the entrepreneurial bankruptcy of TNKB entrepreneurs is strongly tied to the conflict of the leader, which is exacerbated by Tuan Guru’s need to concentrate on other issues. Uang salam originated as a substitute for a new economic source to preserve the TNKB. Uang salam is a practice that persists until it eventually makes room for commodification. Commodification is a tactic used by TNKB as part of its survival plan after the entrepreneurial bankruptcy so that it can continue to exist and advance up to the present.

Abstract

This article presents ru’yah al-hilal as a marker for implementing Ramadan fasting among the Tarekat Syattariyah (TS). Ru’yah al-hilal is important for TS because it is one of the doctrines that must be implemented. The ru’yah al-hilal doctrine inspired the birth of the maliek bulan tradition, which is carried out openly every year by TS adherents and the general public. To understand the ru’yah al-hilal doctrine in TS, a research question is asked how the ru’yah al-hilal doctrine can become a maliek bulan tradition among TS. This study found that the doctrine of ru’yah al-hilal originates from the al-Qur’an and hadith, which speak of ru’yah al-hilal as the precursor of the beginning of Ramadan. However, this normative doctrine is still general. To understand the doctrine of ru’yah al-hilal, the TS group interprets it through the maliek bulan tradition, which is carried out every year to ensure the fasting time of Ramadan. The results of the maliek bulan will be conveyed to all TS networks in various regions in Indonesia to serve as a guideline for the start of the implementation of Ramadan fasting.

Abstract

This article examines the power relations between Tuan Guru and the Malay Sultans. Power relations are not only in relations between people and authority but relations that support and strengthen each other’s existence. This research raises how the power relations between Tuan Guru and the Malay Sultans were formed. The Tuan Guru Manuscript (TGM) written by Tuan Guru ‘Abd al-Wahhab Rokan was used as the main source to answer the research questions. This manuscript is important because it is Tuan Guru’s letter and notes to the Sultan of Langkat. The results of this research explain that the power relations formed between Tuan Guru and the Sultans have supported the spread of the Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah-Khalidiyah Babussalam (TNKB) in the Malay world. Then, power relations have also impacted the establishment of a tarekat village. It was supported by the Sultan by providing land and other supporting facilities.

Abstract

This study aimed to discuss the Tariqa Shattariyya (TS) in the Pariaman-translocal community of Indonesia. TS is an integral part of the life activities associated with these community groups. This research method is qualitative and relies on in-depth observation of the object under study. The perspective used by ethnography seeks to fully describe the Pariaman people who migrate to various regions of Indonesia. This study focused on Medan and Bekasi cities to explore TS and the Pariaman-translocal community. The findings of this study explain that wherever the Pariaman people migrate to Indonesia, the Syattariyah order will constantly be revived and developed there. As an ethno-tariqa, TS was formed by introducing it to the Pariaman culture. Through ethno-tariqa, it determines the identity of the Pariaman-Translocal community in order to constantly connect in their migrations. Therefore, the mission of the Pariaman-Translocal community is to disseminate TS as a “connection tool”  overseas and form a spiritual ethnic community. TS is a “reminder tool” of their hometown used as a reference for their life overseas.

Abstract

This article initially explores the Minang-origin tarekat in Medan City. These Minang-origin tarekats are scattered in various regions and have an activity base in Medan City. The distinguishing element of a Minang tarekat from other communities is related to the ethnic identity within it, both in the doctrines and rituals taught to the tarekat. To understand the tarekat from Minang, a related research question is asked about the genealogy and role of the community from Minang in Medan City. This research found several tarekats from Minang, namely the Tarekat Syattariyah (TS), which has a lineage connected to Shaykh Burhanuddin in Ulakan, Pariaman, the Tarekat Sammaniyah wa Naqsyabandiyah (TSN) related to Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadim in Belubus, Payakumbuh, the Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah Kadirun Yahya (TNKY) is connected to Shaykh Hasyim in Bukit Tinggi and Shyakh ‘Abd al-Majid in Tanah Datar, and the Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah Yayasan Jabal Abi Qubis (TNYJAQ) from Shaykh Ibrahim’s path in Bonjol, Pasaman. Meanwhile, the role played by the tarekat from Minang relates to spiritual education, such as Sufism recitation, which is actively carried out in surau or at home, and mysticism activities which are practiced according to a specified time. Finally, this study confirms that Minang-origin tarekats in Medan City have an important role in the spiritual education of the people of Medan City.
