Abstract

The research is located in Ulem-ulem destination of Tetebatu Village. Management of Ulem-ulem forest area and its surroundings has not been optimally carried out, resulting in less effective inter-sectoral coordination. The pattern of natural resources utilization by the community and government has not been fully able to support natural preservation, such as minimum understanding of the concept of ecotourism. In addition, the Tourism Village Management Agency and Tourism Awareness Group of Tetebatu Village do not yet have systematic planning and with integrity related to the development of sustainable ecotourism at Ulem-ulem destination along with waste management that has not yet been implemented. The research employs mixed methods, qualitative and quantitative. To answer the problem formulation regarding development strategy, the researcher employs a qualitative SWOT Matrix approach and questionnaires. The results are presented in four different sub-studies which as a whole will be further discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of using English as the language of instruction on the effectiveness of teaching and learning in non-English majors in tourism classes, its main problems, students-experienced challenges, and solutions to offer based on the perspective of needs and difficulties. The researchers employed descriptive qualitative research. Meanwhile, the classroom action research approach was used in the first semester majoring in Tourism Travel at Politeknik Selaparang Lombok. Data collection was carried out by participatory observation, compiling instruments in the form of questionnaires of learning needs and difficulties, as well as focus group discussions (FGD) with two lecturers who have implemented English as the language of instruction with communicative delivery and three students majoring in Tourism Travel at Politeknik Selaparang Lombok taken by using purposive sampling technique. Results and discussion will be further discussed.

Abstract

English is arguably the most widely used language in the world and it is considered as the mother tongue by more than 400 million people. It is underlines the impotance of mastering English and the scope of English which is too broad makes everyone has different motivations in learning English. The purpose of this research is to investigate the differences motivation in learning English as a foreign language. The participants of this study were 5 people from different backgrounds based on their needs to support them in living their lives. They were from student, lecturer, awardee of scholarship, worker, and course-taking people. This research method employed a descriptive qualitative method. The sample was taken using purposive sampling since data collection was in accordance with their respective positions. Data collection techniques included observation, interview, and documentation. The results and discussion will be further presented.

Abstract

Culture is a guideline relationship between people or groups that function as a forum for sharing feelings and other lives. It is also used as a life guide and differentiator between humans and animals. For this reason, each region has differences and uniqueness that are highlighted depending on their respective regions according to the needs of the community. This study aims to analyze the goals of the Sembalun people when carrying out the Ngayu-ayu traditional activities. The design used in this research was qualitative descriptive. The data were obtained by using interviews and documentation techniques. The researcher used open interview. It was conducted to get information from the respondents based on the problem and object being interviewed. Documentation is used to obtain the data by collecting all kinds of legal documents such as notes, reports and photography. The results and discussions will be discussed further.

Abstract

Listening is the process of making meaning from is heard, and as such, has a critical function for learning. Although students spend a large portion of class time of listening that must be explicity taught. Cartoon film is one of the media can be applied by a teacher as medium in teaching and learning process, especially teaching listening skill. In this study, the writer tried to investigate the cartoon film toward students listening skill for the first year of MA Keterampilan NW Pancor . The method that is used in this study is an experimental because the researcher investigated and analyzed the data. The population of the study is the whole classes of the first year students of MAK NW Pancor taken by claster sampling. Pre test and post test is used to get the data as instrument. The result showed that using the media in teaching and learning process is more effective to increase the students’ motivation and enthusiasm in doing learning process.

Abstract

The prompt development of English has formed a new perception that English should be the language of daily life. Diverse studies have been carried out to extend knowledge about the language itself with the various methods used. The researcher, in this context, aims to examine the speech style used by the main actor and the racial conflict that happened in the movie of “Freedom Writer”. The researcher uses a socio-linguistic approach to get a better understanding of the context of the speech and the speech style that is used according to the context. The film was based on a real story that happened in the united stated. The film was released in 2007. The researcher found a variety of speech style that was used by the main actor in the movie. The most dominant speech style used in the film is “Formal Style”. The formal style is used in an important and serious situation such as lectures, sermons, television newscasts, and some other occasions. The language style that is rarely used in this film is the “Frozen” style because the style is used in certain literature. More complexed discussion in this movie regarding racial issues were also further discussed.

Abstract

Reading is a multifaceted process that involves word recognition, comprehension, fluency, and motivation. To develop this competence, a creative technique is intended to be applied. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Cognitive-Based Storytelling Technique (CBST) in learning narrative texts. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in this research. The primary assessment tool used was a test. The participants in this study consisted of 263 second-year students from MAN Selong, all of whom were deemed to have similar characteristics. The data obtained for the experimental group in the pre-test ranged from a minimum score of 3 to a maximum score of 14. In the post-test, the lowest score observed was 8, while the highest was 14. For the control group, the pre-test results ranged from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 13. In the post-test, the lowest and highest scores were 4 and 14, respectively. Subsequently, the calculated mean scores for the experimental group in the pre-test and post-test were 8.08 and 11.11, respectively. For the control group, the mean scores in the pre-test and post-test were 7.36 and 7.91. These results will be further discussed in the subsequent sections.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the causes on EFL Students' grammatical errors in speaking skills for students of English Language Department of Hamzanwadi University. This research employed descriptive qualitative research design. The participants of this study were 27 students from the second semester. The data were collected by three research instruments which were observation, interview, and documentation. The observation results showed that students often used their mother tongue for class interactions, rarely applying English during the learning. Moreover, the results of the interview showed that students faced challenges in applying grammar to speaking skills due to a lack of vocabulary, comprehension, writing-focused approach, and lack of practice. In conclusion, it is important to learn and practice grammar in speaking skill because fluency in grammar and language rules is crucial for students to become qualified teachers and avoid mistakes. Learning and practicing grammar in speaking skill is also essential for long-term capability.
