Abstract

This study aims to get an overview of the features of spelling errors in the preparation of official letters and to find out the factors that cause written language errors in official letters at one of the universities in Medan City. The procedure of this study uses a qualitative descriptive analysis procedure. The data collection method in this study is in the form of a documentary method. The information analysis method uses language error analysis procedures, namely information identification, information classification, and determining the frequency of errors. The source of information for this research is in the form of official letters written at one of the universities in Medan City. Research information in the form of written language that contains spelling errors. The research results show that there are errors in the use of spelling, and these errors are listed in interlanguage errors, such as language transfer and transfer of training. The low ability of the Indonesian language writer of the letter is the cause of language errors. The results of this research can help other agencies to pay more attention to the use of the Indonesian language, and it is considered important to hold official letter-writing training by authorized institutions.

Abstract

This paper examines the refinement of language which is more polite expressions to avoid statement that are felt rude, which is a thesis entitled “Communicative Functions of Euphemism in Minang Language as a Reflection of Eastern Tradition”. This research uses a semantic approach, identifying the form of euphemism in Minang Language. The basis of the theory used is using the theory of Allan and Burridge (1991), in this theory explaining the function of euphemisms. This guides the community to have a more polite attitude in speaking. This manners in speaking are called Langgam Kato, namely Kato Mandaki (which is a greeting word used for people who are older or of higher social status), Kato Manurun (a greeting word used for people who are younger or of lower social status), Kato Malereng (which is a greeting word used for people who are in the same position and respect each other in a family relationship) and Kato Mandata (a greeting word used for people who are the same age or the same in terms of age, social status and closer relationship or familiar).

Abstract

Penerjemahan bahasa asing banyak digunakan dalam perdagangan, pendidikan, teknologi, pariwisata, dan lain-lain. Penerjemahan tulisan dan lisan merupakan salah satu keterampilan berkomunikasi berbahasa yang sangat penting di dunia ini. Kemampuan tersebut sangat diperlukan untuk para remaja agar dapat bersaing di dunia internasional dan mendapat peluang kerja yang lebih baik lagi. Untuk itu diperlukan pelatihan untuk mereka. Sebagai solusinya, melalui program kemitraan masyarakat (PKM) ini, tim pelaksana memberikan pelatihan penerjemahan bagi remaja Desa Deli Tua Kecamatan Namorambe. Pelatihan keterampilan bahasa yang dibentuk melalui PKM ini dipandang sangat diperlukan dan bermanfaat bagi remaja sebagai bekal untuk melakukan penerjemahan nantinya. Hasil dari pelatihan ini berdampak positif terhadap kemampuan penerjemahan dari Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia. Oleh sebab penilaian yang positif dari peserta, diharapkan pelatihan ini dapat dilaksanakan secara berkelanjutan dengan peningkatan kualitas yang lebih baik lagi kedepannya.

Abstract

English plays an important role in the tourism industry, especially in promoting overseas tours through tour guides. The communication that occurs between tour guides and tourists is related to the image of Indonesia by these tourists. By mastering foreign languages, as well as understanding the culture of various countries, it is expected to be able to provide the best service and be able to create a good impression or image which has the effect of increasing the Indonesian tourism industry. So in this study, functionalization of the use of English is needed so that the English language is easy to understand in order to the message conveyed by the speaker can be easily understood by the listener, especially for tour guides at Okdo Tour & Travel. The method used in this study is qualitative and data obtained through observation. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the tour guides lack of interest in honing English skills so that it affects the development of the potential that exists within the tour guides and it requires more professional English tutors so they can learn and use English in various activities.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to (1) To find out the types of conversational implicatures (2) to describe how the implicature exist (to find out the types of non-observance maxim of cooperative principle) and (3) To find the purpose of generate implicature. This research was descriptive qualitative. The data of this research were the dialog in BBC News Indonesia’s Interview with Joko Widodo. To analyze the data in this research, the theory of implicature and the non-observance cooperative principle by Grice was employed. In the data analysis the researcher applied qualitative data method by Miles and Huberman (2014). The results of the research found there were 16 implicatures identified out of 18 of data in the dialogue, while the other 2 were general implicatures. Additionally, the researcher identified a lot of disregarded maxim forms. The most frequently disregarded maxim was the flouting of the maxim of quantity. Abstrak Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) Mengetahui jenis-jenis implikatur percakapan, (2) menjelaskan bagaimana implikatur tersebut muncul (untuk mengetahui jenis pelanggaran prinsip kerjasama non-observasi), dan (3) menemukan tujuan dari pembentukan implikatur. Data penelitian ini adalah percakapan dalam wawancara BBC News Indonesia dengan Joko Widodo. Untuk menganalisis data pada penelitian ini digunakan teori implikatur dan prinsip kerjasama non-observasi oleh Grice. Dalam analisis data, peneliti menerapkan metode data kualitatif oleh Miles dan Huberman (2014). Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa terdapat 16 implikatur khusus yang diidentifikasi dari 18 data dalam percakapan, sedangkan 2 lainnya merupakan implikatur umum. Selain itu, peneliti mengidentifikasi banyak bentuk pelanggaran prinsip yang diabaikan. Prinsip yang paling sering dilanggar adalah pelanggaran prinsip kuantitas.
