Abstract

The design of campus landscape is expected to reflect the institution values, provide the character and the spirit of place to campus environment. It is highly influenced by visual experience and impression of campus environment. There are two methods in landscape visual quality assessment: descriptive assessment method and evaluative assessment method. Both assessment methods cannot be done simultaneously, but as a sequence phase. Descriptive assessment method should be done first to obtain a reference for evaluative assessment method. Landscape visual quality evaluative assessment method is used to measure the level of public assessment about visual quality and visual response. Information Processing Theory is used to develop the visual quality evaluative assessment method and to obtain unified integration between descriptive assessment and evaluative assessment. The development of evaluative assessment method includes the process of comparing, averaging, or determine the ranking of each environmental hue or landscape areas in campus, based on the public or college user community preferences.

Abstract

The use of atrium in hospital buildings accelerating the patient's healing process and reduce the impression of stress on hospital buildings. However, the presence of the atrium can also pose a fire hazard because it can be a means of spreading smoke quickly. This study determines the effect of atriums in hospital buildings on the level of life safety in the event of a fire. The study was conducted at two hospitals in Bandung and Jakarta, Indonesia. The level of life safety is assessed through the difference between the time needed for the evacuation, referred to as RSET, and the time taken by smoke to cause a critical condition for occupants, called ASET, where RSET must be shorter than ASET. The analysis carried out on two physical configurations: open and closed atrium, and the results of this study showed that with an open atrium, the smoke quickly covered the evacuation route before the evacuation process completed, or ASET<RSET. The fire room door must be closed, and the smoke-barrier must be installed around the atrium to prevent the spread of smoke into patient rooms, thus fulfill the ASET<RSET criteria.

Abstract

The very word “theory”sometimes seems to scare people … (Only) few people feel at home with theory or use it in a productive way”.

Abstract

Contemporary architects highlight past ideas and present new manifestos often perceived as utopian. Bjarke Ingels introduced hedonistic sustainability in response to the demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable living through different perspectives. This paper comprehensively explains the concept of hedonistic sustainability through the designs of Bjarke Ingels, a contemporary architect. Literature from various sources is examined to describe Bjarke Ingels' idea. Hedonistic sustainability combines sustainable ideas, fun, and community. Bjarke Ingels's architectural design is applied through simulation and an ironic approach. Its representation facilitates the exploration of the design objects planned concretely. The idea of playful and communality was raised through the design that accommodates various user activities. Bjarke Ingels's idea is expected to contribute to the knowledge and contemporary architecture design process in Indonesia. © 2020 Nita Dwi Estika, Yudhistira Kusuma, Dewi Retno Prameswari, Iwan Sudradjat

Abstract

There are two types of building energy consumption, namely embodied energy and building operational energy. Studies on operational energy have been widely discussed, while studies on building embodied energy are still quite rare to be studied, especially in Indonesia. In fact, the calculation of embodied energy, especially on embodied energy material, is important in the design phase of the building because it can be used as the basis for various determinations of building energy values and carbon emissions generated by buildings due to construction activities. By using the right tools in the embodied energy calculation, the building planner can determine the right embodied energy value so that it can support the building energy mitigation. This paper aims to explain the use of embodied energy building calculation software that have been developed with the aim of providing an overview and supporting research development of embodied energy building in Indonesia.

Abstract

Inaccuracy in choosing and using the type of measurement will result in biased research findings. Measurements commonly used in architectural research are objective, subjective, or objective-subjective (mixed) measurements. This article will discuss mixed measures (objective and subjective) in architectural research. Researchers can analyze field data using a quantitative approach, while subjective measurement data are analyzed using a qualitative approach. The results of the interpretation of the two types of measures can show convergence or divergence. This article aims to reveal the benefits and challenges of combining objective and subjective measurements in architectural research, based on systematic literature reviews in scientific journals, which have successfully used objective-subjective measurements and outlines the various benefits and challenges. This study shows that using objective-subjective measures in architectural research can be beneficial if done in an appropriate context.

Abstract

Customary and traditional villages, also called vernacular cultural landscapes, are local settlement units whose inhabitants adhere to ancestral beliefs. It is important to conduct research on vernacular cultural landscapes in Indonesia, given the usual and concerning degradation of cultural landscapes. Different places have different cultures and different customary rules and habits. Each has its uniqueness and distinctiveness, so there is no one standardized approach or method that can be adapted to study the vernacular cultural landscape. Different places may require different research approaches or methods; even the same place if studied under a different topic or time frame, may also require a different approach or method. There are research approaches commonly used by the researcher of the vernacular cultural landscape, including phenomenology, narrative study, case study, grounded theory, and ethnography. This article will review one approach that can be an alternative for the researcher of the vernacular cultural landscape, namely Symbolic Interactionism. Symbolic Interactionism is an approach that can be effectively applied to study human groups, community life, and social interactions. Symbolic interactionism is able to reveal the relationships that occur naturally among members of the society, particularly the relationship between intangible symbols, rules, norms, and daily activities, with tangible things such as the formation of space, buildings, circulation, and other physical configurations.

Abstract

Title: Hybridization of Architectural Styles in Government Buildings in Rokan Hilir during the Regents' Term from 2001-2021 The Architecture of Government buildings in Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia, demonstrates a change in style during the terms of three Regents who served between 2001 and 2021. The architectural style of government buildings initially referred to the Malay architectural style but later shifted orientation to architecture with various dome-shaped roofs. This article explains the changes in the architectural style of government buildings in Rokan Hilir from 2001 to 2021 and maps them genealogically. The research was conducted using a historical method, utilizing primary data from field observations and interviews and secondary data from development project archives and literature. The results of this research provide a genealogy of architectural styles in government office buildings in Rokan Hilir, regarding the Traditional, Modern, Dome, and Neo-Classical styles. Throughout their development, these four references underwent a process of hybridization, resulting in five hybrid styles as follows: Traditional-Neo-Classical Hybrid, Neo-Classical-Dome Hybrid, Traditional-Dome Hybrid, Dome-Modern Hybrid, and Traditional-Neo-Classical-Dome Hybrid.
