Abstract

The focus of translation has shifted from the macro level of isolated linguistic units to the macro level of the socio-cultural context in which the translation act takes places. It means that translation has played quite significant role in communicating and exchanging social and cultural information. The aim of this study is to find out the cultural terms in the Indonesian novel Bumi Manusia, the techniques of translation applied by the translator, and to explain how the techniques applied reflect the ideology of translation. The method of collecting data in this study was through observing by note-taking technique. The collected data were analyzed descriptively using qualitative method. There were 187 data of five categories of cultural terms, fourteen idioms, four sayings, and fourteen techniques identified in the novel. The most tendency of application of ideology of translation in translating the cultural terms related to Javanese culture was domestication ideology (78, 20%), it showed that the translation was oriented to TL. The next orientation used in the translation of the cultural terms was followed by foreignization ideology 12%), it showed that the translator tried to introduce Javanese cultural terms to the target readers using SL-oriented. The last tendency was partial foreignization and partial domestication (10,8%), it showed that the translation was partially oriented to SL and partially oriented to TL.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using LRD Strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension of the second-grade students at SMPN.2 Tembilahan. LRD strategy is a literacy strategy that builds students’ prior knowledge before they read a text. It is a powerful tool for engaging struggling readers in classroom discussion. There were two classes taken by the researcher, experimental group, and control group. The treatment was given to the experimental group for eight meetings. The materials were Recount text and Descriptive Text. The instrument used was multiple choices test consisting of 30 questions. By the end of the meeting, the researcher gave them post-test. The result of the analysis shows that the LRD strategy significantly improves the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Confidence is an important thing in speaking because without it speaking skill can not be well and it became one of some problems in speaking skill which faced by the students of SMK Negeri 2 Tembilahan. To solve the problem, the reseacher conducted the experimental research is that quasy experimental design by applying the debate technique. The aim of this research is to know the effectiveness of debate technique on students? confidence in speaking skill. The data collection technique in this research is questionnaire that consists of 20 Close Ended statements using Likert Scale type. The sample of this research is 33 students of XI grade of SMK Negeri 2 Tembilahan as control and experimental class. After getting the data using questionnaire, the reseacher find that debate technique is effective toward students? confidence in speaking skill with the result t-observed is 15,84 while t-table is 2,04 from 5% and 2,75 from 1%. The tobserved score is higher than t-table. Based on the result, H0 (null hypothesis) is rejected and Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. It also means that debate technique is effective toward students? confidence in speaking skill at XI grad of SMK Negeri 2 Tembilahan in academic years 2017/2018.

Abstract

Speaking is one of four skills that learned by the students in learning English as a foreign language. Through this skill they are supposed to be able to communicate and to express their idea, feelings, and thought orally in English. Students silence is a phenomenon that often occurs in speaking class where the students are not actively engage in speaking activity. It also happened to the eleventh grade students at SMA N.1 and SMA N.2 Tembilahan Kota. This problem motivated the researchers to investigate what factors causing the students to be silent in speaking class and what are the teachers’ efforts to cope with it. There were 144 students of eleventh grade and 5 English teachers as the subject of this research. The instruments were questionnaires, 15 closed-ended questions to the students and 10 open-ended questions for the teachers. The results shows that psychological factor is the dominant factor that make mostly students performed passively in speaking activity with percentage 42%, linguistic factor 39%, and socio-cultural 19%. While the efforts of the teachers to cope with students’ silence are implementing various strategies and teaching techniques, using audio visual media, and personal approach to help students’ difficulties in Speaking.
