Abstract

The Hunger Games is one of Hollywood films that contains deaths and deadly scenes throughout its trilogy. There are plenteous meanings of deaths that can be analyzed from the films, which will develop new meanings and definitions of deaths as an interesting topic to discuss. The researcher employed Boaz Hagin's framework of death because Hagin provides a framework about deaths and how deaths can be meaningful. In his book, he writes a broader range of philosophical description about deaths in Classical Hollywood Cinema which explores the morality and ethical values of mainstream films that portrays death as a meaningful part of life. The research problem is what is the meaning of deaths found in Hunger Games using Hagin’s framework of deaths. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach aiming at describing the phenomenon and characteristics. The data collected qualitatively by examining them throughout to get relevant issues and ideas and classify them. The findings show that death can bring meanings to characters in the films, such as a death in line where death means as a savior for their beloved ones, death as politic seen from the characters' past life that brings hope for the future, death as the Access, Authority, and Test, can be seen from how the characters use their talent to survive.

Abstract

This community service activity was motivated by the importance of religious character education as the basic foundation of character education. The aim of this activity was to implement method and media which suitable for children’s characteristic ‘to play’ as an attempt to internalize the value of religious character. This community service activity was held in TPQ Baiturahman Boyolali by using combination of method : observation,discussion and mentoring. The result of this community service activity were 1) game can be used as a media to introduce the value of religious character to children, 2) Emotional strengthening, motivation and habituation are needed to accompany children being someone who is beneficial for others.

Abstract

Sebagai tujuan wisata, museum seringkali dipandang sebagai objek yang kuno dan tidak menarik, khususnya bagi anak-anak. Hal ini karena pelayanan museum tersebut tidak dirancang dan ditujukan untuk ramah anak. Salah satu di antaranya dapat dilihat pada bahasa teks yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan artefak-artefak museum yang terkesan formal dan ditujukan pada orang dewasa. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan cara yang berbeda untuk menyampaikan seluruh informasi yang ada di museum agar bisa diterima dan menarik bagi anak-anak. Babyfication adalah sebuah konsep untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut. Babyfication adalah aplikasi yang berisi gambar animasi artefak-artefak museum yang dilengkapi dengan penjelasan dalam bentuk audio dan teks Bahasa Indonesia dan Bahasa Inggris. Sebagai salah satu bagian dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat, purwarupa aplikasi ini sudah diterapkan di Museum Keris Nusantara dan Museum Radya Pustaka. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa baik para pengguna/pengunjung maupun pemangku kepentingan museum menyambut baik aplikasi ini sebagai perangkat sekaligus metode untuk menciptakan museum yang ramah anak. Sebagai tindak lanjut dari kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini, diharapkan pihak pengelola kedua museum secara aktif mempromosikan ketersediaan aplikasi ini secara langsung kepada pengunjung atau melalui media massa dengan tujuan untuk menarik para pengunjung muda.

Abstract

Death is inevitable, inapprehensible, yet it is the most trustworthy experience by human. People have their own various ways to encounter deaths, some by witnessing the death of others, some by reading fictional stories. Death and literature has close relationship as the literary genres portray deaths in various perspectives, such as death is praised in Classics, death is tragic in Romantics, and death is a part of life in postmodern literature. However, the attitude of people towards death and grief are vary. This research aims at finding the stages of grief (death and dying) using Kübler-Ross theory in C. G. Lewis novel A Grief Observed (1961). This research is qualitative using content analysis approach. The data were gathered through words, phrases, and sentences contained in the novel. The findings shows that the main charater, Lewis, finally succeed managing the whole five stages such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Moreover, with his acceptance of the death of his wife, he can capture the world in more meaningful ways and find peace in his heart. This is also strengthen that literature can be a media for consolation from suffering since this novel is based on true life story by the author himself.

Abstract

This community service (PKM) objectives are to discover how these adolescents utilize digital platforms and their obstacles for their businesses and to find out how to improve digital literacy on business for adolescents in SMP Muhammadiyah Daarul Arqom Klaten . This activity employs qualitative research using four steps in collecting the data; observation and interview, preparation of material, implementation of activities, and evaluation. This community service (PKM) was held from March 11-13, 2023 in SMP Muhammadiyah Daarul Arqom Klaten with the total of 40 adolescent participants. The first result, the majority students use internet and social media for entertainment and pleasure, not business interest. Second, the students faced obstacles in improving digital literacy and starting business using digital media. Third, the community service (PKM) team create solution to improve digital literacy on business for adolescent such as increasing the knowledge of digital literacy and its utilization, arranging schedules for individual target or business, learning more about the product strategy and marketing, upgrading and escalating new information every day, finding networks to level up their spread of communication, and being confident and independent, especially on financial life.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the taxonomic model of narrative functions by Vladimir Propp and to find out how these functions are distributed among the dramatis personae (spheres of action) in selected Jane Austen’s novels, they are Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion. This descriptive qualitative research aims to describe the phenomenon and its characteristics. The data were collected qualitatively by documenting, examining, and classifying thoroughly. The results indicate 20 functions in Pride and Prejudice, 14 functions in Emma, 15 functions in Sense and Sensibility, and 22 functions in Persuasion. From the results, this research shows that Jane Austen’s fairytale novels are compatible and match the taxonomic model of narrative functions by Vladimir Propp. The results also show four dramatis personae in each novel (Hero, Villain, Donor, Helper). As for Sense and Sensibility, it has a False Hero. Furthermore, the results share similarities in the 13 functions and the happy endings marriage (W). At the same time, the differences are located in the different number of functions and their distribution, which influence the overall narratives.

Abstract

Narratology study has been debate from scholars from myth to postmodern times. However, although postmodern thinkers put aside a set rule of narrative, yet in fact in there are found numerous generous amount of narrative by incorporating the world and the self. This research attemps at applying morphological perspective of Propp’s narrative functions in J.K. Rowling’s novels such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Using qualitative content analysis approach, this research was conducted by doing documentation, examination, and classification to obtain the relevant data. The result shows that there are identified 19 functions in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which written using propp’s nomeclature symbols as βγ2δεη1θ1A14CDEG6J1K5ExI1↑, and then 21 functions in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets written in nomeclature symbols β2γδε2ζη3θA1aBCDEF5G3H2I2Rs1MNQ1, and  13 functions in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them written in nomeclature symbols  αδ[η1η2η3]A13a3C[E7E8][F1F2F4F5F7]GH1I2[K2K5K6K7K10]Rs5Q3. In addition, J.K. Rowling’s novels which widely accepted as postmodern literary works are still relevant to Propp’s morphologic model of narrative functions approach. In short, Propp’s theory is applicable for the study of narrative not only for folktale but also other literary genres.

Abstract

Human being has different emotions within themselves, like sadness, happiness, upset and including guilt which can come from various causes. Uncontrolled guilt can be one of the causes of someone experienced madness, which then has a bad impact on themselves and other parties because this emotion of madness can lead someone to act beyond the reason. Guilt and madness can be found in the behavior of someone who is experiencing a bad psychological condition on the daily life. Guilt and madness can also be found in the literary works and one of them is from Edgar Allan Poe with a short story entitled The Tell-Tale Heart. This is a classic of the Gothic fiction genre that uses point of view from an unnamed narrator who experienced the guild and madness that lead the narrator to killed someone. Therefore, this research is intended to examine the feelings of guilt and madness that presented in the short story The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. This research uses qualitative methods and uses Sigmund Freud's 1923 psychoanalytic theory. This research conduct to reveals the relationship between guilt, madness, and the narrator's id in The Tell-Tale Heart short-story. Researchers found that “Ego” was more dominant from guilt and madness. This finding offers a new perspective on how guilt and madness are presented in Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Tell-Tale Heart seen from psychoanalytic theory which has the potential to provide input for future field research and practice.
