Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the values of character education contained in the textbook When English Rings A Bell Curriculum and Book Center for SMP/MTs Class VIII, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia revised edition 2017. This research is qualitative using content analysis. The data used in this study are in the form of texts in textbooks. The main instrument of the study was researcher and the data sheet was also used as the second instrument. Several steps were taken during data collection: (1) reading carefully; (2) understanding certain parts related to the focus of intensive research; (3) marking certain parts related to the research focus; and (4) making data descriptions accompanied by process of coding and inserting data into tables. In analyzing the data, this study uses critical discourse analysis technique. The subjects are 6 chapters in the textbook When English Rings A Bell Curriculum and Book Center for SMP/MTs Class VIII, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia revised edition 201. The objects are 18 characters values described by the Ministry of National Education. The findings of character education values in the textbook When English Rings A Bell Curriculum and Book Center for SMP/MTs Class VIII, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia revised edition 2017 as many as 10 characters values, namely (1) discipline; (2) interest reading; (3) curiosity; (4) responsibility; (5) creative; (6) communicative/friendliness; (7) appreciative; (8) social care; (9) environmental awareness; and (10) tolerance.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the main elements in English. because mastery of vocabulary is very important in learning English, one method that can be used in teaching vocabulary is through word walls. The purpose of this study was to describe the responses of class VIII students in one of the junior high schools in Karawang using the word wall technique in vocabulary learning. This study was conducted to see whether the use of word walls is effective in learning vocabulary. The design of this research uses a case study. These results indicate that the use of vocabulary in vocabulary learning gets a positive response from students. They feel that by using the word wall their vocabulary increases and they are motivated to continue learning English. But there are drawbacks to the use of word walls in vocabulary learning, namely, it takes a long time to make word walls and the cost is quite expensive. To conclude, using the word wall technique in students' vocabulary learning positively affected them; it improved their vocabulary learning and motivated them to continue using it.

Abstract

The literature circle develops into an interesting and challenging strategy that can encourage students to take an active role in reading instruction. The aim of this study is to investigate students’ responses to learning extensive reading through the literature circle. The participants of this study were four secondary students in Karawang. To gain the natural experience of the participants, the author uses phenomenological study. The dataset for this study were collected by observation, interviews, and documentation. The data collection methods for this study were observations, interviews, and documentation. The authors used thematic analysis. The results showed that using a literature circle can help students read more, make them feel more involved in group discussions, and encourage them to read more English textbooks. However, the authors found out some obstacles that students face while conducting this activity such as the lack of sufficient time to carry out this activity. in the question-and-answer session students feel less exporting text from their group of friends.

Abstract

English learning should be supported by an interesting and good strategy to make students’ learning valuable, enjoyable, and interested, as well as in a Speaking setting, but the most important thing is a willingness to study. The purpose of the study is to describe the experience faced by one English education student in enhancing English speaking skills after facing offline or face-to-face classes and then suddenly facing online classes because of the covid-19 pandemic attack. This research is using Qualitative approach and Narrative Inquiry as a research design in gaining the data. The participant of this research is one English education student in the eighth semester who has faced offline or face-to-face classes and then suddenly face online classes because of the covid-19 pandemic. The result of this research describes some interesting experiences that the participant has passed to enhance her English speaking skill, such as some habits and strategies that she has been doing and joining competitions, which construct her to become a good English speaker.
