Abstract

This study aims at tracing the first language acquisition of two children at age of 4.2 and 1.8. This study is conducted based on naturalistic observations. The method used is the descriptive qualitative method. The observation is carried out by recording the activity of the subjects (Octa – 4.2 years old, and her sister, Adek – 1.8 years old) using a camcorder and also making hand writing. The recording consists of natural and spontaneous conversation among the two children and their father. The result of the study presents that a 4.2-year -old) child seems to be able to use sentences having grammatical features corresponding to adult language and master declarative, negative, imperative, interrogative sentences, but the type of the clauses used is limited to the simple sentences. An 1.8-year-old child seems to be able to use single words to express idea but utters some words imperfectly. She omits a first consonants such as /h/, or even vowel of a particular word; reduplicate syllables; and substitute consonants /c/ with /t/, consonant /s/ with consonant /h/. It is not expected that an one year, eight months to be able to accurately produce the /r/ sound because it may be pronounced /l/.

Abstract

This study is an experimental design that aims to find out if there is any significant difference in the students’ listening comprehension taught by using cognitive strategies. The study was conducted at STMIK Prabumulih. The population taken was the fourth semester students. The samples were taken by random sampling technique. Pre-test and post-test were carried out with participant students from the two classes, experimental and control class. The experiment class showed an average of 40 in the pre-listening test. On the other hand, the control class showed an average of 35 when doing the pre-listening test. After being treated with cognitive strategies, then the post-listening test was carried out. The experiment class showed an average of 70, whereas the control class got 50.83. The mean gain for control class was 16.50, and for the experimental class were 27.50. Both classes differ in gains in which the mean gain for experiment class was higher than the other one. It was found that t-observed was greater than the value of t-table (4.63 > 1.671) and thus null hypothesis was successfully rejected. It could be interpreted that cognitive strategies affected the students’ listening comprehension. The result of cohen’s d is 1.19, and categorized as large. With the Cohen’s d of 1.19, 97.1 % of the treatment classes were above the mean of the control one. The finding of the study is expected to be reference or source of information in designing teaching listening syllabus. Keywords: Effect, Cognitive Strategies, Bottom-up, Top-down

Abstract

This study is a correlational design with the aim of finding out if there is any  positive correlation between the students’ interest in reading poetry and their  ability to analyze poetry at SMA Kartika I-2 Medan. The study was conducted at SMA Kartika I-2 Medan. The product moment correlation formula was used to determine the correlation between the students’ interest in reading poetry and their  ability to analyze poetry.  The hypothesis was tested by comparing the value of  rcount to rtable on the degree of freedom (df) = 30 - 2 = 28 with α = 0.05 significance level and df = 28 (0.361). It was found that  rcount was higher than rtable  (0.726> 0.361), and thus null hypothesis was successfully rejected. The result of the study shows that  there was any positive correlation between the students’ interest in reading poetry and students’ ability to analyze poetry at the eleventh grade students of SMA Kartika I – 2 Medan. The correlation coefficient was 0.726, and the regression line was Y = 12.07 + 0,948x. The contribution of the students’ interest in reading poetry to their ability to analyze poetry is 47.29%. Keywords: Ability, Analyze, Correlation, Interest, Poetry

Abstract

This study is concerned with the effect of the dictogloss technique on the students’ listening comprehension. It uses an experimental design. The population of the study was the third semester Information Systems study program students of STMIK Prabumulih.  The samples were taken by applying random sampling technique. Pretest and posttest were carried out with participant students from the two classes, experimental and control class. The independent samples t-test was carried out to compare  the means of the two independent groups. The finding reveals that the tcount value was greater than the ttable value at the 0.05 significance level with df 62 (3.58>1.67). With the result of this calculation, the null hypothesis is successfully rejected. It means that the listening comprehension of the third semester students of STMIK Prabumulih taught by using dictogloss technique is higher than students taught with conventional technique and thus dictogloss technique significantly affect students’ listening comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the metafunction patterns of clauses of the Toba Batak Language. The data was gained from the speech of tulang (the mother’s brother) in delivering ulos saput at the Bataknese sari matua (an old person who died but he/she still has children who are unmarried) ceremony. The result shows that 74% of the clauses are patterned with Predicator, Complement, and Adjunct followed by Mood, whereas 26% of them are patterned with Mood followed by Predicator, Complement, and Adjunct.  The majority of the clause pattern is Predicator followed by Mood.  The most dominant theme is the Marked Topical Theme that reached 73% whereas 26% of them have Unmarked Topical Themes; the rest clause is imperative that has no theme. It can be concluded that  clauses in the Toba Batak Language are dominantly patterned by Predicator followed by Mood. The Mood consists of Finite preceding the Subject.  Residue itself mostly precedes Mood. The most dominant theme is the Marked Topical Theme in which the theme is not the Subject.BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan pola metafunction dalam bahasa Batak Toba.

Abstract

Even though listening is often categorized as a passive activity, it is not a simple process as it may seem. There is an active process because in it. Listeners must focus on the spoken language and actively draw what message is being delivered. There are some factors that make a listener may need a lot of work to comprehend a spoken language such as colloquialism, accent, intonation, hesitation, word or phrase clusters, and content. Preliminary data gained from pre-observation at STMIK Prabumulih showed that the third semester students found themselves hard to acquire information from spoken language, hence it is necessary to find out the causes so that make an effort to develop their listening skills. The method used is descriptive research design. The result reveals that students encounter various kinds of listening problems in learning comprehension such as unfamiliar words, the length and of the spoken text, speed rate, lack of concentration and pronunciation, and the noises around come from both the background sound of the spoken language recording and environmental sound such as sound from outside classroom.
