Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether transactional dialogue in teaching speaking modalities experimentally can improved students speaking skills. In this study transactional dialogue used along with modal auxiliaries to assist students in learning speaking. This study was conducted at SMP YPI BINTARO, and 35 students from class 7B were selected as the sample participants. In choosing the sample, the writer used simple random sampling technique. The method applied in this study was quantitative with quasi experimental of one group pre and post-test design. The instrument used in this study was oral tests used in transactional dialogue. The result of this research showed that the students’ mean score was 64.91,while their post-test score was 68.02. The result of statistical hypothesis found out that the level of significance is higher than 0.000 < 0.005. This means Ho (Negative Hypothesis) was rejected and H1 (Positive Hypothesis) was accepted. Thus, it in indicated that transactional dialogue in teaching speaking modalities  improved students’ speaking skills. The study recommends that: 1) teachers able to used dialogue to facilitate students in teaching speaking 2) students should be given chances practice using English to enhance their learning outcomes. This study useful to language learners and teachers.
