Abstract

Teacher-made tests became a common practice in school to assess the students’ mastery of the content knowledge and skills. In the development of the test, multiple-choice test form is frequently a preferred option among the teacher. This study examines the content knowledge, cognitive and authentic evidence of teacher-made multiple-choice tests in EFL learning context in Junior High school. The English midterm-test document for grade 7 as the source of data. The test consists of 25 multiple choice items. The analysis showed that test items functioned primarily at the content knowledge of linguistic competence (52%), discourse competence (24%), and interactional competence (24%). The cognitive functioning level is C1 (4%), C2 (32%), C3 (32%) and C4 (32%), while the authentic functioning level is 16%. However, there are 84% items that are considered less authentic with the result of the analysis showing the mean score of the raters is 2.69. Regarding the findings of this study, the teacher needs to develop the authentic tasks in the test.

Abstract

Song has been used as a pedagogical tool for different purposes in the EFL classroom. Song lyrics mostly tell the story of an artist's life using a variety of language styles. This study analyzed the lexical and contextual meaning of slang words used in Bruno Mars's song lyrics. Three lyrics from Grenade, Lazy Song, and Runaway Baby song titles were selected to identify slang words based on their construction includes the social meaning embedded in the lyric. The result indicated twenty-eight slang words that fall into the category of blending, clipping, acronym, coinage, and compounding. Coinage, the dominant characteristic of slang, relates to the association made with an object to create new meaning. Slang words compose of blending and clipping are understood in the lyrics, but acronyms, coinages, and compounding need contextual interpretation. The social meaning of all the slang words identified from the three lyrics is to express feelings and emotions about love, power, painfulness, and humiliation.

Abstract

The objective of this classroom action research (CAR) is to improve students’ speaking skill using silent short video at class XI of SMA Negeri 57 Maluku Tengah in the academic year 2022/2023. This research was conducted in two cycles, each with three meetings. The Steps were preliminary study, planning, action implementation, evaluation and reflection. The researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher and the students to conduct this research. The data collected were in the form of qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were gained through Questionnaire and the quantitative data were gained from Speaking Ability Test. The result of this research showed that by using silent short video in English teaching and learning, the students’ speaking skill has improved in five main areas, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. The students were interested in learning speaking and they became actively involved in learning process. Moreover, the students were confident and fluent in speaking practice.
