Abstract

Hollywood values are defined as total liberalization to individuals for their own view to genders, races, and sexual relationships that widely accepted as main political messages in Hollywood film and television media, but the old values or conservative value still has strong presence in American society. The purposes of the study are to find how ideal conservative value portrayed by the characters and setting in Forest Gump and to find how conservatism as political philosophy presented through different era of setting of in Forest Gump film. The researcher applied theories of four parts of conservative value taken from John Kekes, those part are skepticism, pluralism traditionalism and pessimism. This research is qualitative research employed by observing scenes, dialogs between characters, how ideal form of conservative values portrayed by character behavior and the settings of Forest Gump. The results of these studies showed how the film portrays what are ideal conservative value, a form of value that follows tradition as supposed to be. The researcher found the film giving reflection on how values and people who follow it endures and prosper in changing era like the main character Forrest Gump and people who abandon the old values and lead astray in their life. Nilai-nilai Hollywood didefinisikan sebagai total liberalisasi bagi individu untuk pandangan mereka sendiri terhadap gender, ras, dan hubungan seksual yang diterima secara luas sebagai pesan politik utama dalam film Hollywood dan media televisi, tetapi nilai-nilai lama atau nilai konservatif masih memiliki kehadiran yang kuat dalam masyarakat Amerika. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan bagaimana nilai konservatif ideal digambarkan oleh karakter dan latar di Forest Gump dan untuk menemukan bagaimana konservatisme sebagai filosofi politik yang disajikan melalui era pengaturan yang berbeda dalam film Forest Gump. Peneliti menerapkan teori empat bagian dari nilai konservatif yang diambil dari John Kekes, bagian itu adalah skeptisisme, tradisionalisme pluralisme dan pesimisme. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif yang dilakukan dengan mengamati adegan, dialog antar karakter, bagaimana bentuk ideal dari nilai-nilai konservatif yang digambarkan oleh perilaku karakter dan pengaturan Forest Gump. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana film ini menggambarkan apa yang merupakan nilai konservatif ideal, suatu bentuk nilai yang mengikuti tradisi sebagaimana mestinya. Peneliti menemukan film yang memberikan refleksi tentang bagaimana nilai-nilai dan orang-orang yang mengikutinya bertahan dan makmur di era yang berubah seperti tokoh utama Forrest Gump dan orang-orang yang meninggalkan nilai-nilai lama dan tersesat dalam hidup mereka.

Abstract

This research discusses magical realism in Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane. The purposes of this research are to find out the characteristics and literary techniques and to explain the role of magical realism that is portrayed in the novel. This research uses theories of characteristics of magical realism by Wendy B. Faris and literary techniques and role of magical realism by Anne C. Hegerfeldt. The method that is applied is descriptive qualitative and the approach is post-structuralism. The data are obtained from the dialogues and narrations that relate to the topics that are being analyzed. The result of the analysis shows that the five primary characteristics of magical realism are found in the novel like the irreducible elements of magic, unsettling doubts, phenomenal world, merging realms, and disruption of time/space/identity. It also shows that the five basic literary techniques of magical realism are represented within the novel such as the adaptation of other genres and modes, magical realist focalizer, paradigm of knowledge, strategies of destabilization, and techniques of literalization. The result also shows the role of magical realism that is portrayed through the influence of magical phenomena in the narrator/protagonist’s life.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research analyzed a literary work entitled Demian, written by Hermann Hesse. This research conducted to discover the Shadow Archetype of Emil Sinclair, the main character in the novel. This research used the theory of Individuation Process by Carl Jung. This research conducted with qualitative research as the research design and used Psychological Approach. The result of this study were six shadows found. The shadows were the lie of Emil, the stealing committed by Emil, he doubted Bible, he drifted away from Christianity, Emil’s new lifestyle with Alfons Beck, and when he missed his old self.  Every shadow is triggered by different causes.Keywords: shadow archetype, individuation process, psychological approach. ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menganalisis sebuah karya sastra berjudul Demian yang ditulis oleh Hermann Hesse. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui Arketipe Shadow Emil Sinclair, tokoh utama dalam novel ini. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori Proses Individuasi oleh Carl Jung. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan jenis penelitian kualitatif sebagai desain penelitian dan menggunakan Pendekatan Psikologi. Hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan enam shadow. Shadow adalah kebohongan Emil, pencurian yang dilakukan oleh Emil, dia meragukan Alkitab, dia menjauh dari agam Kristen, gaya hidup baru Emil dengan Alfons Beck, dan ketika dia merindukan dirinya yang dulu. Setiap bayangan dipicu oleh sebab yang berbeda.Kata kunci: arketipe shadow, proses individuasi, pendekatan psikologi

Abstract

There were two objectives in this study. First was to find out the types of social action performed by Peter Parker both as himself and his other identity as the hero, Spider-Man. In this objective, Weber’s types of social action was used to find out Peter Parker’s types of social action. Meanwhile, the second was to explore the way Peter Parker behaved in his front-stage as the Spider-Man and in his back-stage as his true self. Goffman’s dramaturgy theory was used to explore Peter Parker’s behaviours in his front and back stages. The form of this study was a qualitative research for this study used words as its data taken from Spider-Man 1 (2002) film script. The result of this study showed that there were four types of social action performed by Peter Parker and his behaviours during the two stages were based on his two different identites, as the real Peter Parker and as the Spider-Man. Peter Parker performed four types of Weber’s social action: (1) rational instrumental social action; (2) rational value social action; (3) affective social action; and (4) traditional social actions. Peter Parker’s behaviours were divided according to which stage he was playing at the moment. In his front-stage, Peter Parker behaved according to his role as the hero, Spider-Man. While, in his back-stage, Peter Parker behaved as his real and usual self, the photographer. Terdapat dua tujuan dalam penelitian ini. Pertama untuk mencari tahu mengenai tipe-tipe tindakan sosial yang dilakukan oleh Peter Parker baik sebagai dirinya sendiri maupun sebagai seorang pahlawan bernama Spider-Man. Dalam tujuan yang pertama, teori Weber mengenai tipe-tipe tindakan sosial digunakan untuk mencari tahu tipe-tipe tindakan sosial apa yang dilakukan oleh Peter Parker. Disisi lain, tujuan yang kedua yaitu untuk mengekplorasi bagaimana Peter Parker berperilaku dalam front-stage (panggung depan) sebagai Spider-Man dan back-stage (panggung belakang) sebagai dirinya sendiri. Teori dramaturgi milik Goffman digunakan untuk mengeksplorasi perilaku Peter Parker dalam dua panggung miliknya, panggung depan dan belakang. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif yang menggunakan kata-kata sebagai datanya yang diambil dari skrip film Spider-Man 1 (2002). Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan terdapat empat tipe tindakan sosial yang dilakukan oleh Peter Parker dan bentuk perilakunya berdasarkan dua identitas berbeda yang dimiliki Peter Parker yaitu sebagai Peter Parker yang biasanya dan sebagai si pahlawan Spider-Man. Peter Parker melakukan empat tipe tindakan sosial seperti yang dijelaskan oleh Weber: (1) tindakan sosial instrumental rasional; (2) tindakan sosial nilai rasional; (3) tindakan sosial afektif; dan (4) tindakan sosial tradisional. Perilaku Peter Parker dibagi berdasarkan panggung mana yang akan ia mainkan perannya. Di panggung depannya, Peter Parker berperilaku sesuai dengan perannya sebagai si pahlawan Spider-Man. Sementara itu, di panggung belakangnya, Peter Parker berperilaku sebagai dirinya yang biasanya dam sebagai seorang fotografer.

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the masculinity traits in Jesminder Bhamra of Bend It Like Beckham film based on Bem’s theory and to find out the characteristics of Jesminder Bhamra as portrayed in the film by using Reaske’s theory of characterization. This study used qualitative design with content analysis approach. The source of data in this study was Bend It Like Beckham film script, while the data consisted of dialogues, utterances, and scenes related to Jesminder Bhamra’s masculinity traits. From the total twenty indicators of masculinity traits, Jesminder Bhamra showed to have eight kinds of masculinity traits such as aggresive, ambitious, analytical, athletic, competitive, defends own belief, has leadership ability, and masculine. Jesminder Bhamra character was characterized through the five tools of characterization from the six tools in Reaske’s theory; they are appearance, aside and soliloquy, dialogues, hidden narration, and actions.

Abstract

ABSTRACTHappy Gilmore is a movie that tells the story of Gilmore whose ambition was to become a professional hockey player. However, he had to leave it to find money to pay for his grandmother's house. Then, he jumped into golf tournaments because he could raise money quickly. In his struggle, Gilmore must experience a lot of anxiety and he must fight these feelings to achieve his goals. The first purpose of this study is to determine the type of anxiety experienced by Gilmore in the Happy Gilmore movie (1997). Besides, this study also aimed to determine the type of defense mechanism Gilmore used to overcome his anxiety. This study was qualitative research because it focused on analyzing the psychological aspect of a character in a movie. Accordingly, the approach  used here was the psychological approach. In this study, the researcher used Freud's theory about anxiety and defense mechanisms. Based on the results of the study, it was found that Gilmore experienced neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety, and realistic anxiety. To overcome his anxiety, Gilmore used several types of defense mechanisms. These defense mechanisms were sublimation, displacement, projection, rationalization, reaction formation, regression, denial, and compensation. Keyword: Anxiety, Defense Mechanism, Happy Gilmore movie

Abstract

The first purpose of this study was to determine the type of anxiety experienced by Joy in the Room movie (2015). Besides, this study also aimed to determine the type of defense mechanism Joy Newsome used to overcome her anxiety. This study was qualitative research because it focused on analyzing the psychological aspect of a character in a movie. Accordingly, the approach used here was the psychological approach. In this study, the researcher used Freud's theory about anxiety and defense mechanisms. Based on the results of the study, it was found that Joy Newsome experienced moral anxiety and realistic anxiety. To overcome her anxiety, Joy used several types of defense mechanisms. Those defense mechanisms are repression, reaction formation, denial, displacement, regression projection and fantasy.

Abstract

This study discusses the portrayal of power and authority based on the order of plot in Elysium film. There are two theories used in this study: Dahrendorf’s power and authority and Reaske’s plot. The research design of this study was qualitative content analysis. The data of this study were taken from Elysium film in the form of dialogues related to the portrayal of power and authority. This study finds out that the portrayal of power and authority is divided based on the plot order of Elysium film: rising actions, climax, and resolution. Power is portrayed through the representative of Earth citizens who decide to work together. Meanwhile, authority is portrayed through the representative of Elysium citizens who decide to kill each other in taking control of Elysium. This study concludes that the representatives of power stand as the winner of the conflict by eradicating the discrimination policy of the previous Elysium that is controlled by authority and building the new Elysium without discrimination against the Earth citizens.Keywords: plot, power, authority, film
