The Factors of Speaking Difficulties in New Students' of English Education Department David Andrian; Mohammad Kurdi Wijaya; Mariyatul Kiptiyah

Abstract

Speaking problems is a phenomenon of new students that we see today some new students are used to using their mother tongue, they tend to use their mother tongue because they have been familiar since childhood, so it is easier to talk to each other. They feel they lack mastery of foreign languages so they lack motivation. They are not so used to using foreign languages. From the explanation above, related to the theory of (Penny Ur, 1996 in Fitri Nurhadiah, 2019) there are four factors that cause students' difficulties in speaking such as barriers, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and the use of mother tongue. Here, the author conducted research by using qualitative approach and implement observation and interview to get the data. there are 3 factors that cause difficulties for new students in speaking, namely performance conditions, learning environment, speech problems such as barriers, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and use of mother tongue.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of important aspect in learning English. For second language students, it is a new challenge to master it. Since, they have vocabulary of their own native language. They have to compare it and replace something new to their understanding. Some vocabularies are similar and some vocabularies are completely different. Therefore, an attractive medium is needed to make students interest to master vocabulary. English British Council Site is applied on this experiment. This research is quantitative pre- experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. It is aimed to measure the effectiveness of using the English British Council site toward the students mastering vocabulary. Forty students are involved on this experiment. The result shows significant different of pre-test and post-test. It indicates the using of British Council Site is effective to be used for students’ second language to master the vocabulary.

Abstract

Listening is one receptive skill which represents students’ ability in understanding a language. Nowadays, media have certain rule to influence this listening skill; e- radio (ABC Newsradio Australia) becomes one effective medium to increase students’ listening skill. This article aims to investigate the effect of e-radio on listening achievement of third semester students of English department at Islamic University of Malang. Pre-experimental research is used as the research design with the pre-test and post-test as the main instrument. The result of T-test showed that there is significant effect of the using e-radio on students’ listening achievement.

Abstract

Writing is one of the basic skills of the English language. It is usually considered one of the most difficulty skill than other skills of foreign language students. Even native speakers feel difficulty in showing good command of writing. In writing, the students need to acquire those first ideas to make sure what they want to write. They have to write about what they think in their mind and state it on paper by using the correct rules. In this research researcher use problem based learning method in teaching writing. The objective of this research to investigate the influence of problem based learning on the studnts’ writing skill in hortatory exposition text at eleventh grade of SMA Saidiyah Arosbaya. In conducting data, the researcher used quasi- experimental design. The population of this research was eleventh grade of SMA Saidiyah Arosbaya and sample were XI IPS 1 as experimental class and XI IPS 2 as control class. The result of this research based on the analysis data of Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) test from SPSS 17.0, the result of ANCOVA test from p-value was 0.035. It was less than the level of significant (0,05). If p-value<from the level of significant (0,05). It showed that the alternative hypothesis (Ha)was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected.
