Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is one of the most common diseases in the world, and its increasing every year. Age is one of many risk factors in hypertension. As we get older, our blood vessels tend to lose some of their elasticity and become stiffer. This can put us at risk for developing high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. It's important to take care of our cardiovascular health as we age to reduce the risk of developing this condition.Purpose: To study the correlation between blood pressure and age.Method: This was a descriptive study conducted in Cipondoh Makmur, Tangerang. The non-random consecutive sampling was used as the sampling technique, and it will be presented as descriptive data. Spearman correlation tests were used to correlate blood pressure and age if the data distribution is not normal.Result: There were 103 individuals who met the criteria, with an average age of 51.71 (12.80) years, mean systolic blood pressure of 126.2 (22.25) mmHg, and mean diastolic blood pressure of 74.46 (11.49) mmHg. A significant correlation between age and systolic blood pressure was observed (p-value: 0.001; r: 0.323, indicating a weak association), while no significant correlation was found between age and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion: The physiological aging process is an unavoidable risk factor for hypertension. It is crucial to Increase awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and optimal hypertension control.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Elderly population is increasing globally. One of the global adversity is obesity. Prevalence of obesity in the elderly population is growing over time and has become a global threat. Obesity also affect insulin level and resistancy, becoming the foundation for diabetes melitus, the unending global health problem. This will bring various health risks for elderly. This study aims to find out the correlation between fasting insulin level with body mass index in the elderly population. This cross-sectional study was done in Santa Anna Nursing Home. The sampling method is total sampling. Body mass index data collection was carried out according to standard physical examination protocols and insulin level analysis was carried out according to standard laboratory protocols. Statistic analysis used in the study is Spearman correlation, with hoped significance level of 5% and power of 80%. We found 31 respondents with mean age of 73.1 (±9.55) years with female as the dominant gender. The median of insulin level were 10 (5,4 – 29,,5) uIU/mL, with mean BMI of 22,24 (3,95) kg/m2. Statistical analysis found no significant correlation between fasting insulin level with BMI (p-value : 0.179), but clinically could be seen that increase of fasting insulin level will affect the increase of BMI though its only a weak correlation (r-spearman : 0.248). Fasting insulin level plays a role and could affect body mass index in the elderly body.  Keywords: Body Mass Index, Elderly, Fasting Insulin, Nursing Home  ABSTRAK Jumlah penduduk lanjut usia secara global akan terus meningkat.
