Abstract

This study aimed to find out the types of impoliteness strategies based on Jonathan Culpeper theory,1996 and the dominant impoliteness strategies used by the netizen comments about the murder case of Brigadier Joshua found on YouTube Kompas TV. This study was conducted by applying the descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was taken from the comment column posted by netizens about the murder case of Brigadier Joshua. The technique for analyzing the data is qualitative research. This research showed that four impoliteness are used: Bald on Record impoliteness, Positive Impoliteness, Negative Impoliteness, and Sarcasm/Mock Politeness. There were 400 comments. In total, there are 70 comments on Bald on Record (17,5%), 100 comments on Sarcasm/Mock Politeness (25%), 60 comments on Positive Impoliteness (15%), and 170 comments on Negative Impoliteness (42,5%). Based on the comments that have been analyzed, the researcher concluded that the dominant Impoliteness strategy that is used by netizens is Negative Impoliteness. Netizens mostly used Negative impoliteness to express their negative attitude on giving online comments about the murder case of Brigadier Joshua found on YouTube. The reason could be, that in comparison to other strategies, these have many sub-strategies that support positive and negative impoliteness strategies, such as ignore, uncaring, seek disagreement, scorning, ridiculing the other, frightening, make the other comfortable, call the other name, use taboo words, fearing the others and so on.

Abstract

This study was intended to determine the significant effect of Task-Based Group activities on students' collaborative behavior in reading class. The objectives of this study was to find out whether there is a significant effect of Task-Based Group activities on students’ collaborative behavior in reading class of Eighth Grade at SMP HKBP Padang Bulan Medan, used a quantitative experimental research design. The population of this study were eighth grade students of SMP HKBP Padang Bulan Medan, grades VIIIA and VIIIB. The number of students is 40 students as a sample for each class consisting of 20 students. Students were divided into two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group was given treatment (Task-Based Group Activities), while the control group was taught conventional methods. The instrument used to collect data is a multiple choice test. Data were analyzed using the t-test formula. The results of the analysis show that to be served is higher than t-table (5.81 > 1.27) at a significance level of 0.05 with degrees of freedom (df) 38. This means that the use of Task-Based Group Activities in the teaching and learning process has succeeded in influencing student learning scores, especially in class reading descriptive text.

Abstract

The study examines how the Listen-Read-Discuss method affects students' success in reading comprehension. An experimental quantitative design was employed in this investigation. Pupils in grade X at SMA HKBP Sidorame Medan, totaling 40, made up the study's population. Each class averaged 20 pupils. The experimental group and the control group were each made up of two students. While the control group received traditional instruction, the experimental group received instruction using the Listen-Read-Discuss strategy. A multiple-choice test that was split into a pre-test and a post-test was the instrument utilized to gather the data. The t-test formula was used to assess the data. The analysis's findings indicated that the Listen-Read-Discuss strategy has a significant impact on students' reading comprehension achievement when tobserved is higher than ttable (4,65 > 2.0) at the level of significance of 0,05 and the degree of freedom (df) of 38.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is aimed to find out whether or not the use of jumbled summary strategy can improve reading comprehension of 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Medan in narrative text. The thesis discusses the improvement reading comprehension using jumbled summary strategy. Since the purpose of this research to find out whether or not using jumbled summary strategy for the improvement reading comprehension, this research classified into action research with qualitative and quantitative approaches. There were two cycles used in this research. There are four steps each cycle, planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this research are 32 students in the eight grade of SMP Negeri 10 Medan. The data of this research were quantitative collected from the pre-test and post-test using 25 multiple choice questions. The qualitative data obtained from observation and field note. The result of this research is improvement reading comprehension using jumbled summary. According to the data that collected from cycle I dan cycle II the average is increased significantly from 48.5 to 69.83 that is good results even though they have not yet reached the indicator of 90% of students.
