Abstract

This research examined the role of branding and design in the process of city/nation identity creation. Recently, there are a growing phenomenon of branding within cities and/or nations. The growing competition between cities to increase the number of visitors and investors, foreign and domestics, and develop new businesses which in turn could absorb talents and manpowers was the background for the phenomenon. With the development of branding awareness, more and more cities/nations commit to a branding strategy so that they can measure the journey of their city/nation branding. This article began with a number of basic definitions about the city/nation branding concept; and then was followed by the case studies. The sources for this paper are derived from books and journals, the author’s travelling experiences, and articles from the internet regarding the city branding and city tourism.

Abstract

As technology improves, more and more aspects of games move closer to the human life and activities, including the way people interact and socialize with each other within their community. Pokemon Go is one of those games that utilize the social aspect of its players. This paper aims to maintain that in the process of playing Pokemon Go, the player greatly involve in a social engaging experience, and it is all possible with the help from the visual aid from the visual communication design.

Abstract

This is a research paper that takes as its central issue recent contestations and negotiations between Indonesia and Malaysia regarding certain forms of these countries? intangible cultural heritage. In recent years, there has been an increasing incident in relation with cultural conflicts that happens between these two neighboring countries. These cultural conflicts specifically referred to the traditional performance arts, which has been hereditarily bequeathed by their respective ancestors. Despite the facts that both countries shared the same cultural roots, each side seems has a tendency to despise each other whenever the subject of culture ownership is being brought: both claim for the same cultural rights. Questions on which side is more entitled to the rights became public fierce debates; and it wildly happened especially in the online world through the medium of social networking platform. This paper examines the phenomenon on how should the ownership of authenticity be placed. And since it happens in the modern societies which cannot be separated from their digital personas, the role of social media is inexorably also be addressed. It will link the two identities of the public who is initially mere the audience of the performance then transform into the owner of the cultural product in dispute. This essay begins by a major length discussion about the concept of authenticity in culture, along with the ownership of intangible heritage, the motivation for claiming authenticity, and the protection of cultural property. It will then go on to the topic of the major changes brought by social media in the modern society. Subsequently it will continue to the state of cultural conflict between Indonesia and Malaysia over ?stolen? cultural heritage.

Abstract

This article intended to examine the circumstance of wayang kulit during the coming of Islam in the Java island of Indonesian archipelago; how it changed and held functions within the Islamisation process of the region. The lack of written materials made this issue was somewhat unclear . In exploring these issues, this article would explain some elements surrounded Javanese wayang, specifically during the Islamisation period of Java. By showing several examples of wayang kulit characters, whether or not wayang had undertaken adaptations during this era and how far was observed. The method of this was from the data collection for that largely originated from academic books and journals from both western and Indonesian scholars, and then some visual examinations would be done upon them. The observation of each object aims to show that while to some extent wayang did undergo some alterations during this Islamisation period, however the core value of wayang performance itself was still largely Javanese, principally and aesthetically.

Abstract

AbstractNational Identity Representation of the New National Museum of Indonesia. The Collection of the National Museum of Indonesia is a manifest of national identity. The National Museum should represent various elements that define an identity of a nation. At the same time we also need to critically assess the role of the National Museumin the construction of nation identity. Since the beginning of its founding, Indonesia is a nation with diverse components. However in recent times there have been many instances where people seem to have forgotten the importance of these diversities. At the moment the National Museum of Indonesia is undergoing a major restoration with the strategy to incorporate storyline as a path to present its collections. This researchaims to assess the representation of national identity within this new approach. By incorporating observation on the National Museum of Indonesia and Linggarjati Museum as comparative studies as a methodology, continued with interviews, analysis and synthesis. The final result of this research will give a recommendation that hopefullywill give benefit the National Museum of Indonesia.  AbstrakPeran Storyline pada Representasi Identitas Nasional di Museum NasionalIndonesia Baru. Koleksi Museum Nasional Indonesia merupakan manifestasi dari sebuah identitas nasional. Museum Nasional hendaknya merepresentasikan berbagai elemen yang menentukan ide ntitas suatu negara. Di lain pihak kita hendaknya juga terus bertanya, peran apakah yang dimainkan oleh Museum Nasional atas konstruksi identitasbangsa? Bangsa Indonesia adalah bangsa yang berbhinneka. Namun akhir-akhir ini, berbagai peristiwa yang mencederai kebangsaan seakan menjadi pertanda bahwa banyak di antara masyarakat kita yang mulai melupakan pentingnya keberagaman. Saat ini, Museum Nasional hendak berbenah diri, melebarkan sayap dan membangun tata visual baru dengan berdasar pada storyline. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkajirepresentasi identitas nasional pada Museum Nasional Indonesia yang baru. Penelitian ini menggunakan metodologi observasi pada Museum Nasional Indonesia dan Museum Linggarjati sebagai pembanding, dilanjutkan dengan tahapan wawancara, analisis dan sintesa. Hasil akhir dari penelitian berbentuk kajian ini berupa rekomendasi yang dapatdigunakan sebagai rujukan oleh pihak Museum Nasional Indonesia.
