Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not it was effective to teach skimming and scanning techniques in reading a narrative text by the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Gelumbang. The method used experimental. The population of this study was all tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Gelumbang. The sample of this study was 60 students. It indicated that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It could be concluded that it was effective to teach reading comprehension by using skimming and scanning techniques to the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Gelumbang.

Abstract

Abstract

This study is about the contrastive analysis of suffixes in English and Uzbek languages. This study was done to find out the differences and similarities of suffixes in English and Uzbek languages and focused on form, function, and meaning. Technique for collecting data in this study is obtained from the documentation, including websites, journals, dictionaries and English and Uzbek morphology and grammar books. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Contrastive analysis is used to describe the result of the study between English and Uzbek suffixes that had been compared. The result of research showed that there are five differences of suffixes in English and Uzbek in terms of their form, five differences in their function and six differences in their meaning. Also, there are three similarities of suffixes in English and Uzbek in terms of their form, six similarities in their function and three similarities in their meaning.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the correlation between joining non-formal education and the English achievement of the second-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Palembang. The problems of this study were: Is there any correlation between joining non-formal education and English achievement of the second-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Palembang? And What does taking an English course gives impact toward English achievement of the second-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Palembang? The method of this study used quantitative research. The total number of the sample was 52 students. The questionnaire and document were used to collect the data which were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment correlation and Linear Regression analysis. The findings showed that: (1) there was a significant correlation between joining non-formal education and English achievement (r= .845), (2) there was a significant impact of taking English courses and students' English achievement (p-value= .000).

Abstract

Abstract: E-textbooks are also referred to as electronic books, printed downloads, or internet sources. A textbook is an ideal example of technology in active learning for university students. E-textbooks are becoming more great choice than paper textbooks. In several academic institutes at a campus like the University of Muhammadiyah Palembang, where every lecturer is allowed to have a personal laptop. Thus, it's critical to look into how e-textbooks are adopted and how they might alter students' learning processes. The purpose of this study is to see what the risks of learning are and how to optimize the solution for learning and using English e-textbook for non-English study program students. This research’s novelty provides solutions and even optimizations related to the existing advantages and disadvantages specifically faced by non-English department students in learning English through e-textbooks. The solutions and optimizations are discussed descriptively into the modern approach and innovative technology. Furthermore, this research is beneficial for students to learn English for specific purposes. Keywords: E-textbook, risk, helpful, technology, learning

Abstract

 Tujuan PKM ini untuk memberikan pemahaman  tentang pentingnya word stress  dan membantu guru bahasa Inggris  dalam melatih  siswa SD Muhammadiyah 16 Palembang dalam menyebutkan kosakata buah-buahan dengan penekanan kosakata yang tepat  dalam bahasa Inggris dengan cara yang menyenangkan dan menarik.Hasil dari angket yang didistribusikan kepada kepalsa sekolah, guru dan 25 siswa menunjukan (1)Semua respondent (100%) menyatakan  pembuatan  media pembelajaran audio-visual  untuk  pengajaran word stress-oriented bertemakan fruits ini  bermanfaat  dalam membantu para guru dan para siswa SD Muhammadiyah 16 menumbuhkan pemahaman tentang pentingnya word stress pada pronunciation (2)Media pembelajaran audio visual yang dibuat tim PKM merupakan media pembelajaran yang menarik  dan  para siswa merasa lebih tertarik , senang dan santai  saat pembelajaran  berlangsung. Dari segi kebermanfaatan dan tujuannya, hasil angket menunjukan  kegiatan PKM ini mampu  menumbuhkan motivasi para guru bahasa Inggris pada SD Muhammadiyah 16 Palembang untuk  membuat media pembelajaran yang kreatif dan inovatif  untuk pembelajaran bahasa inggris  yang lebih  variatif.       Keywords: audio visual, fruits, media, word stress-oriented.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out whether or not it is effective to teach reading comprehension by using probing-prompting learning strategy. The researcher used pre experimental method. The population of the study was the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 7 Palembang was 337 students. The researcher took the sample 36 students by using the convenience sample. Analyzing the data was collected through a written test and calculated by SPSS 16. Based on the data analysis, the result of pretest indicated that the highest score was 70 and the lowest score was 50. In the result of t-test, it was founded that t-obtained was 9.574, so it was higher than the critical value of t-table was 1.690 with (df-1) n=35 at the level of significance 0.05 for one-tailed test. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.

Abstract

The title of this article is “The Correlation between Self-Confidence and Speaking Achievement of Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Air Sugihan”. The problem of this research was “Was there any significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking achievement of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Air Sugihan?” the objective of this research was “to find out whether or not there is significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking achievement of eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Air Sugihan”. The participant of this research was eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Air Sugihan. The sample of this research was 52 students. The data were collected through a ready-made questionnaire and speaking test.The result of the test was analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Based on the data analyses (r-obtained=0.1.000) was higher than (r-table=237). It means that it has a significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking achievement of Eleventh Grade Students’ of SMA Negeri 1 Air Sugihan. Abstract

The significant improvement of technology, creates the process of learning English language easier especially for students majoring in English education study program. Translation is one of the courses that utilizes Google Translate machine or technology. There were thirty-four of final semester students were selected as participants in this study. Questionnaire and interview were the instruments used in obtaining the data. There were seventeen questions of the questionnaire in order to find out students' opinions regarding to the use of Google Translate. The purpose of questions to know students’ desire to utilize Google Translate, to find out the students’ frequency of using Google Translate, and students’ agreement or disagreement to the benefits of Google Translate. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis. Half of the participants used Google Translate to support their English language learning process. Students realized some weaknesses from Google Translate, then half of students also had perception that they were still lack of confidence when they have not double-checked the appropriate meaning or target language by using Google Translate. Thus, for further English foreign language learners should understand some weaknesses of Google translate words result then eliminate those words error result in order to get good English language translation.

Abstract

Laporan akhir pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini diharapkan memberikan manfaat yang besar, tidak hanya bagi penulis pribadi, tetapi juga bagi semua orang sebagai referensi atau pedoman dalam melakukan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang lebih baik lagi, terutama yang berhubungan dengan pelatihan menulis dan berbicara bahasa Inggris. Adapun metode yang di gunakan dalam pelatihan keterampilan menulis dan berbicara bagi siswa-siswi MTs Nurul Hilal Desa Senuro Timur. Dalam hal ini, penulis memberikan media gambar dan arahan kepada siswa tentang instruksi dalam mengerjakan latihan menulis, kemudian peserta mulai mengerjakannya dan pada akhirnya mereka menceritakan apa yang telah mereka tulis kedepan teman-teman mereka dengan menggunakan teknik «look-up and say». Sebelum pelatihan dimulai para peserta sudah datang lebih awal dan memenuhi salah satu rumah warga yang dijadikan tempat pelatihan. Kecamatan Tanjung Batu Kabupaten Ogan Ilir yang ikut berpartisipasi dalam pelatihan tersebut. Pelatihan ketrampilan menulis dan berbicara bahasa Inggris berlangsung selama lebih kurang 5 jam. Kecamatan Tanjung Batu, Kabupaten Ogan Ilir bahwa secara keseluruhan «Alhamdulillah Hirobbil A’lamin» pelaksanaan pelatihan berjalan lancar. Semua peserta antusias mengikuti pelatihan selama lebih kurang 5 jam sampai selesai dengan ekspresi riang dan gembira dan pada akhirnya mereka mampu menyelesaikan tulisannya dan menyampaikannya didepan teman-teman mereka dalam kontek speaking atau komunikasi perorangan dengan baik. Singkatnya, begitu banyak manfaat yang bisa diperoleh bagi semua peserta selama mengikuti pelatihan keterampilan menulis dan berbicara bahasa Inggris. Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang untuk bisa melakukan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang berkelanjutan terkait dengan pelatihan keterampilan menulis dan berbicara bahasa Inggris yang lebih intens dengan menggunakan media-media yang lebih attraktif lagi, sehingga tidak ada lagi siswa-siswi di SMP ataupun MTs yang tidak bisa menulis dan berbicara bahasa Inggris
