Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out the extent of direct translation at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Pematangsiantar in the translation descriptive text from English into Indonesianin academic year 2019/2020.The problem research is about what extent of direct translation method are used at grade eight students of SMP N 6 Pematangsiantar in the translation descriptive text from English into Indonesian?. To solve the problems, the research used theories Vinay and Darbelnet in Venuti (2000:84-93) divided translation procedures into two namely Direct or Literal Translation which cover three procedures (borrowing, calque, and Literal translation). The research uses qualitative descriptive method. The data was taken from grade VIII-2 SMPN 6 Pematangsiantar with the total number of students are twenty students. The researcher takes 20 students to analyze the students’ translating. Then, the researcher analyzes the data, describe and classify their translation. The research finding of the thesis showthat the students’ translation borrowing translatiom 22,2%, calque translation 19,05%, literal translation 58,73% but some students did not get transferring the meaning of text so the students did not complete to translate the text. The researcher concludes that some students always found many difficulties in translation because they do not understand meaning word, the usage of structure in sentences and confused within the text.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to find out if herringbone technique significantly affects to the tenth-grade students in comprehending recount text at SMA Swasta Kampus Nommensen Pematangsiantar. This research is quantitative research with quasi experimental research design. The sample of for this research is taken from two classes namely experimental class (X-3) consist of 30 students that used herringbone technique and control class (X-2) consist of 30 students that used conventional technique selected by purposive sampling. The instruments for collecting data is reading comprehension test. The test is divided into two parts, namely the pre-test and the post-test, which are given to each sample. The researcher finds the total mean score of post-test in experimental group is 79,45 and the total mean score post-test in the control group is 72,22. After calculating the data from all points, the t-test score is 2,120. Then, the researcher consulted the value on the t-table, which has a significance of 5% and the value is 1,672. Therefore, the researcher finds that t-test is higher than the t-table (2,120 > 1,672). It can be concluded that Ha ­is accepted while Ho is rejected. The use of Herringbone Technique is significantly affect to the tenth-grade students in comprehending recount text at SMA Swasta Kampus Nommensen Pematangsiantar. Herringbone technique helps students to improve reading comprehension in developing main idea and finding detail information from the text.

Abstract

The purpose of this research to measure the effect of group discussion on the students’ ability in writing descriptive text at grade eight of SMP Negeri 9 Pematangsiantar. The research method of this research is the quantitative method using a quasi-experimental research design. In quasi-experiment design, there are two groups, the experimental and the control group, and for the test using pre-test and post-test. The population would be used in this study was all students of class VIII at SMP Negeri 9 Pematangsiantar. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the use group discussion method was effective in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Mean pre-test in experimental class was 57,17 while the mean post-test was 71,20 mean pre-test in control class was 48,58 while the mean post-test was 64,37 standard deviation in experimental class was 2664 while in control class was 1950,75 mean post-test in experimental class control 71,20. 64,37 the hypothesis value showed that the t table value was higher than the t table value 2,34. 1673 the finding of the research indicate that the use of group discussion method was effective in students’ ability in writing descriptive text this is approved by the students score in experimental class is higher than the control class.
