Abstract

The aims of this research were analyzing teachers’ perception on the insertion of Balinese culture in BIPA instruction and the ways to present culture in the instruction. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using questionnaire distributed to BIPA teachers in Undiksha Language Center and through interview as well as focused group discussion. The data were analysed  quantitatively by looking at the percentage of response given by teachers and qualitatively by using the method of data analysis consisting of data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of the study showed that BIPA teachers support the insertion of Balinese culture in the instruction. In addition, there were found several ways to present the culture in the instruction, namely (1) presenting culture boxes in the textbook, (2) using authentic materials, (3) supporting the students to interact with native speakers and (4) presenting cultural elements through reading text and listening activities.Keywords : Balinese Culture, BIPA, Instruction

Abstract

Implication during a conversation is common to happen that often leads to misunderstanding between speakers and listeners. This present study aims to describe and analyze the types of conversational implicature that can be found in Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs by Vera Southgate. The present study is qualitative research applying the close reading method. The data were classified using plot segmentation in order to classify the events based on the sequence using Bordwell’s plot segmentation. The data obtained were analyzed based on Grice’s Theory of the types of conversational implicatures, and the theory of cooperative principles which are also known as maxims of speech. The research comes out with findings that there are 6 violations of conversational maxims. There are 5 violations of maxims of quantity, 2 violations of maxims of quality, 2 violations of maxims of manner, and 1 violation of the maxim of relevance. In other words, the result of the research is that there are violations in terms of conversational maxims in Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs by Vera Southgate which 50% out of the violation is maxims of quantity because, in a story, additional information during a conversation leads into another sequence of events in plot development

Abstract

Balinese is one of 718 local languages in Indonesia facing degradation since national and international language influences are getting stronger in the country. Bali is relatively in a better position than the others because it is supported by its speakers, the governmental laws and costumery laws, and by its own script. This article examines the form of local laws on Balinese language and its script, the implementation of the local laws on Balinese language and its script usage, and factors that determine unparallel law of language between the Balinese Provincial Government and the national government. Observation and questionnaires were applied in the data collection method, while descriptive-qualitative technique was used for the analysis. Both were guided by Language Engineering and Forensic Linguistics approaches. The article concludes that Balinese speakers and the Provincial Government work hand in hand to develop the language and its scripts

Abstract

Balinese language is regarded as the reflection of Balinese culture in which preserving Balinese language is also a way for preserving Balinese culture. It can be seen through the use of Balinese language in Balinese dance which is Trunajaya dance. This study aimed at finding the lexicons and the formation found in Trunajaya dance. The method of this study was qualitative study by adapting ethnography model. The setting of this study was Jagaraga village. The data were collected by conducting interview and observation where three dancers were selected as the informants of this study. The instruments used were interview guide and observation sheet. Interview guide was used for collecting the data about lexicons used and the meanings of those lexicons. Observation sheet was used to collect the lexicons used for every part of the dance. The collected data were analyzed by using Qualitative Data Analysis. The results showed that there were 46 lexicons found in the movements and costume were wore by the Trunajaya dancers. It was also found out that the word-formations of the lexicons were affixation, reduplication, and compound.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research on audiovisual translation aims to describe and analyze two elements, namely, the wordplay translation strategies applied by the translator in Scary Movie 3 and the effectiveness of the strategies from a multimodality perspective. Three instruments were used in collecting data; transcription sheet, selection sheet and category matrix. The result revealed that four strategies were implemented in translating wordplay in this movie: wordplay translation into non-wordplay, zero translation, wordplay translation by borrowing the wordplay of the source language, and wordplay translation to wordplay with a related rhetorical device. Furthermore, it was also found that the effectiveness of the strategies was supported by the existence of images (nonverbal visual channel (NVC)), background sounds (nonverbal auditory channel (NAC)), dialogue (verbal auditory channel (VAC)), and the subtitles (verbal-visual channel (VVC)). The holistic analysis of all polysemiotic channels in the scenes show that the characteristics of audiovisual translation does not align the monosemiotic translation. The existence of the semiotic channels allow the text compression in the subtitle without reducing the naration flow.
