Abstract

The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the effect of using Somatic, Auditory, Visual, and Intellectual (SAVI) technique on students’ speaking at SMAN Model 12 Banda Aceh. Furthermore, it is also to investigate the students’ responses toward the implementation of SAVI technique in teaching speaking at SMAN Model 12 Banda Aceh. Two classes (respectively 33 students) are chosen as the sample. The students in experimental class were taught by using SAVI technique and the students in control class were taught without using SAVI technique. The data about the students’ ability were collected through giving test. Meanwhile, the students’ responses toward teaching speaking by using SAVI were collected by giving questionnaires. The data from test were analyzed by using SPSS version 23. Meanwhile the data from questionnaires were analyzed by using percentage formula suggested by Sugiyono (2015). The finding showed that using teaching speaking by using SAVI technique significantly improved students’ speaking ability, especially their speaking sub-skills. The study proved the improvement by the result of z-test in which the z-score for post-test result of experimental and control class is 3.73. It was found against the hypothesis that there is a significant difference in speaking achievement between the students who were taught by using SAVI technique and those who were taught without using SAVI technique at second year students of SMA 12 Banda Aceh.

Improving vocabulary mastery of students requires creativity in finding some strategies in order that students are motivated to memorize the vocabulary. This research aimed to use a comic book to improve student's vocabulary mastery through reading comprehension. The researcher focused on the use of Snow White comic book in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. The data were collected by doing tests. The tests were divided into pre-test and post-test to see the students’ ability on their vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment, and a questionnaire was used to see the students’ responses toward the approach. The samples are the students of MAN 2 Montasik Aceh Besar, consisted of 40 students who were divided into experimental class and control class. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS Version 22. The result of the hypothesis testing of this research showed that students’ vocabulary mastery was significantly improved. The students’ responses toward the use of comic book to improve their vocabulary mastery were positive and the students showed their interest in reading. Therefore, the use of comic book to improve student's vocabulary mastery through reading comprehension is suggested to be used by teachers to help students in learning and memorizing vocabulary.

Abstract

The teaching of English is very important for young learners in the era of industry 4.0. A successful teacher is largely determined by the strategies he/she uses in the learning process. The students in SMP Negeri 1 Sabang were very interested in speaking English. They had won many events in English speaking competitions and mostly reached a good score on speaking test. This research was conducted to find out the strategies used, problems, and the solutions faced by the teachers during a teaching process at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Sabang. The research method of this study is descriptive qualitative by employing observation and interview guide sheets as the research instruments. The participants of this research were three English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Sabang. The results show that the teachers used various kinds of strategies in teaching speaking; role-play, picture describing, interview, and simulations. It was also found that there were five obstacles during the teaching process; some students disturb their friends,  ignore the learning process, bully their friends, lack in vocabulary, and possess limited teaching and learning duration. The solutions in solving the problems show that the teachers use four approaches to solve the problems: teachers maximized student's centered, motivated deeply and sustainably, provided a new vocabulary, and extra time online. It is suggested that English teachers should always find new ideas, strategies, or techniques in teaching-learning so that students are interested in taking part actively in the learning process.

Abstract

Indonesia does not guarantee legitimately English as a second language. However, numerous Indonesian schools officially teach English, including pesantren (Mawardi, Maulidiansyah, Kamal, Nasai, 2019). Historically, the pesantren is an Islamic educational institution that teaches students through classical Islamic books (Fadhilah, 2011). Now, pesantren has been teaching modern lessons, including foreign languages such as English (Tahir, 2015). This study was designed to investigate the pesantren's readiness for English programs. Data collection was done by interview, observation, and documentation. Participants are people who are closely related to the object of research. A total of two English language coordinators were interviewed to obtain data on the pesantren's readiness for the English programs. The researchers also did observation and documentation to obtain supporting data from the research objects. The findings reveal that the pesantren's readiness for English language programs is outstanding in terms of the kinds of English programs, teachers' contributions, supporting facilities, and the pesantren environment itself. These findings are in line with previous researchers' findings, such as Insan (2019), Yulistiya (2020), and Setiawati (2018), stating that there are excellent programs for the advancement of students a foreign language.

Abstract

The scientific approach constitutes an approach to Indonesia's 2013 curriculum. Since it is imperative for Indonesian education, all teachers need to understand, manage, and apply it in the teaching-learning process. Unfortunately, many English teachers still use inappropriate methods as in the 2013 curriculum. This qualitative research aims at discovering the implementation of a scientific approach by English teachers at State Senior High School in Lhokseumawe. The objects were English teachers at SMAN 1 Lhokseumawe, SMAN 2 Lhokseumawe, and SMAN 5 Lhokseumawe. The tools used in this study were observation for three high school English teachers in the schools. The observation results toward the implementation of five scientific approach stages exposed that the English teachers did not carry out the five stages completely. The teacher should master, understand, and apply the teaching process by following the whole stages of the scientific approach. Class mastery and time management are vital for the learning process. Thus, the teachers should consider those points. Hence, interesting supporting media, appropriate learning material, and methods must be considered by the teachers in teaching so that the students will be motivated to learn.
