Abstract

This paper presents the results of research on contextualization efforts made by Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in learning religious texts (kitab) in West Sumatra. It is important to see the efforts of the Islamic boarding school related to the relevance between learning kitab and religious issues that arise in the present time. This research was done in two different shades of Islamic boarding schools in terms of their development history. Data were collected through textual analysis, interviews and observation. The results shows that pesantren maintained and made some progress to its activity of learning kitab, regarding their materials and their learning methods. Besides old method, which is reading kitab in class, Islamic boarding schools are implementing the other two methods, namely discussing and writing papers. The last two methods are focused on efforts to understand and contextualize kitab. Accordingly, learning kitab tradition is still going on. This tradition developed in accordance with the development of educational context and challenges of the times. This study also briefly reviews the papers that are part of kitab contextualization efforts. However, there are pesantrens that have not undertaken writing activities well, as a result religious thinking activities do not develop maximally. Critical and contextual reading kitab has not been fully carried out. This leads to the condition where wider religious problems which emerge in society cannot be solved properly.Keywords: Kitab, Islamic boarding schools, surau, Islamic studies, Minangkabau.Tulisan ini menyajikan hasil penelitian tentang upaya kontekstualisasi yang dilakukan pesantren dalam kajian dan pembelajaran kitab di Sumatera Barat. Hal ini penting untuk melihat upaya kalangan pesantren terkait dengan relevansi aktivitas kajian dan pembelajaran kitab dengan permasalahan agama yang muncul dalam kurun kekinian. Penelitian ini dilakukan di dua corak pesantren yang berbeda dalam sejarah perkembangannya. Data data dikumpulkan dengan telaah teks, wawancara, dan observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, bahwa aktivitas kajian dan pembelajaran kitab di pesantren masih berlangsung dengan beberapa perkembangan, baik dalam hal materi kitabnya maupun metode pengkajian dan pembelajarannya. Selain metode lama, yakni membacakan kitab di kelas, pesantren-pesantren tersebut menerapkan dua metode lainnya, yakni berdiskusi dan menulis makalah. Dua metode terakhir tersebut terfokus pada upaya memahami dan mengkontekstualisasikan kitab. Karena itu, tradisi mengkaji kitab tidak berhenti. Ia berkembang sesuai dengan perkembangan konteks pendidikan dan tantangan zaman. Tulisan ini juga mengulas secara singkat makalah makalah yang merupakan bagian dari upaya kontekstualisasi kitab. Hanya saja, ada pesantren yang belum melakukan aktivitas menulis secara baik, karenanya aktivitas pemikiran keagamaan kurang maksimal berkembang. Pembacaan yang kritis dan kontekstual terhadap materi kitab belum sepenuhnya dilakukan, akibatnya belum secara baik dapat menyelesaikan problem-problem keagamaan yang lebih luas muncul di masyarakat.Kata Kunci: Kitab kuning, pesantren, surau, kajian Islam, Minangkabau.
