Abstract

In this study 54 children with respiratory tract disease: bronchopneumonia, bronchial asthma, bronchiolitis and tuberculosis all treated with acetylcysteine and placebo were analysed. In thirty eight patients with bronchopneumonia 20 were treated with acetylcysteine and 16 with placebo; in 9 patients with bronchial asthma 5 were treated with acetylcysteine and 4 with placebo. Of the 5 patients with bronchiolitis, 3 were treated with acetylcysteine and the remainder with placebo. Two children with tuberculosis were given acetylcysteine. The analysis of patients suffering from bronchopneumonia showed no statistically significant difference between acetylcysteine and placebo. Patients with bronchial asthma also showed no significant difference between both groups. There is a statistically significant difference between the results on the first, third, fifth and seventh day of treatment of the group of patients treated with acetylcysteine. No attempts were made to analyse bronchiolitis and tuberculosis. No side effects were seen in this study.

Abstract

From January 1978 up to December 1980, twenty patients diagnosed with cerebral malaria were admitted at the Department of Child Health, Medical School, Sam Ratulangi University, General Hospital, Manado. They were treated with chloroquin (10 mg/kg body weight/day) intramuscularly, divided into two equal daily doses for consecutive 1-3 days, then continued by chloroquin orally for three more days. All patients also received intravenous fluid drips, symptomatic treatment, and cortisone acetate (15 mg/kg body weight/day) intramuscularly divided into three equal daily doses for three days. Four (20 %) of the cases proved fatal. The remaining 16 (80 %) recovered within 8.5 days on the average, and regained complete consciousness generally within 2% days. No after effects were reported.

Abstract

Puberty is considered precocious when the onset takes place prior to eight years of age. lsosexual precocious puberty indicates that sexual development has occurred appropriate io the individual's phenotype. This can be a) true sexual or b) pseudosexual. In true sexual precocity there is a premature activation of hypothalamic-pituitary axis, while pseudosexual precocity is due to disease of the gonads or adrenal glands or, rarely, other hormone producing tissues. Incomplete sexual development can be ''premature thelarche'' or "premature pubarche". We have encountered 13 cases of precocious puberty in girls in 10 years time (1971 - 1980). Eight of them were idiopathic. Diagnostic procedures, medical treatment and psychosocial handling are discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Iron deficiency with or without anemia as the most common deficiency anemia and its problems in Indonesia has been presented. The prevalence has been discussed and mention made about the etiology and several important factors contributing to iron deficiency; its deleterious effects on learning process, pregnancy, infection and others. The intervention program for iron deficiency anemia conducted in short and long term by the Government of Republic of Indonesia has been presented. It should be emphazised that international cooperation among research workers and supporting agencies should be encouraged to overcome the problems of nutritional anemia in Indonesia.

Abstract

In June -July 1982, 52 infants and children ranging in age from 0-10 years who suffered from acute gastroenteritis were studied for rotavirus infection, using the Elisa method : 11.5 % were found positive. The sex incidence in rotavirus gastroenteritis was greater in males than females. The highest age incidence was over 5 years and there was no significant effect of nutritional status of the patients as jar as the incidence of infection was concerned.

Abstract

A review of nine neonatal hepatitis cases, which underwent exploratory laporatomy in the course of the disease, gave the conciusion that surgical intervention did not give unfavourable effect to the patients. Irrigation of the bile trees provoked bile flow and produced a normal serum bilirubine 3 months after surgery. However, this procedure did not suggest that insidious progression of cirrhosis could be arrested.
