Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate  the effect of daily intake of 100 grams tempe for four weeks on plasma glucose level in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study was a parallel randomized clinical trial. Subjects were 30 diabetic elderly living in four nursing homes in Jakarta. In the study subjects were assigned to two groups using block randomization. All subjects had to take diabetic regiment with calorie and macronutrient following diabetic recommendation diet. The treatment group (n=16) received tempe, while control group (n=14) received legumes other than tempe. Fasting plasma glucose level (FPG) was assessed before and after intervention. Unpaired t test and Mann Whitney were used to analyzed data with the 5% significance level. There were 27 subjects completed the study: 15 of treatment group and 12 of control group. Both group were comparable in age, gender, BMI, calorie and macronutrient intake before treatment. Fat, fiber, and isoflavone intake were significantly higher in treatment group compare to control group. Decrease in FPG after intervention were observed but were statisticaly insignificant. In conclusion daily intake of 100 grams tempe for four weeks did not decrease FPG.  Keywords: elderly, plasma glucose level, tempe, type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Acute renal injury is characterized by decrement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), resulting in nitrogen metabolic end product retention such as blood ureum. Aminoglycoside nephrotoxic injuries are common in elderly, with mortality rate 50-70%. Tempuyung has been empirically used in relieving renal problems as it contains several active antioxidants. This study aimed to analyze the protective effect of ethanol extract tempuyung leaf (EET) against gentamicin induced renal injury viewed from blood ureum level. The method used was true experimental laboratory, 16 wistar male rats, divided into 4 groups (n=4): negative control group (CMC), positive control group (Gentamicin 80 mg/kgBW), 1st treatment group (EET 100 mg/kgBW + Gentamicin), 2nd treatment group (EET 200 mg/kgBW + Gentamicin) for ten days. On the 11th day, blood serum were taken and the ureum level were analyzed. Data was analyzed by ANOVA and post hoc LSD test. Result showed positive control group had the highest blood ureum level (29.50  1.29 mg/dL) compared to negative control group (14.25  1.26 mg/dL), 1st treatment group (26.50  0.58 mg/dL), and 2nd treatment group (22.25  1.26 mg/dL) with significance difference (p<0,001). In conclusion, the result suggested the protective effect of EET against gentamicin induced renal injury. Keywords: acute renal injury, gentamicin, glomerular filtration rate, tempuyung, ureum

Abstract

Howes’ Analysis is an important tool in orthodontic treatment,as it can analyze abnormalities of teeth and jaw, to help diagnose and plan dental care. The aim of this study was to compare the length and width of the dental arch and the the apical base patients of Maranatha Dental and Mouth Hospital (Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut Maranatha) / RSGM and Howes Analysis standard of Caucasian Race which considered to be the reference in determining of orthodontic treatment plan. The subjects consisted of 30 patients who met the inclusion criteria and the results data were analyzed by unpaired t test. The measured variable is the length of the dental arch, the width of the dental arch, and the width of the apical base, and calculated into Howes’ Index. The results showed that there were significant differences in the measurement of the length and width of the dental arch and the Howes Index; whereas the measurement of the apical base there was no significant difference between the results of the study and the reference of Caucasian Race. Conclusion, the length and width of the dental arch and the Howes’ Index did not differ between RSGM Bandung patients with Caucasian race standards whereas the apical base width was different. Keywords: Caucasian people, Howes’ analysis, Howes’ index, Maranatha Dental and Mouth Hospital Bandung

Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is complex of symptoms that occur during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. This study aimed to observe blood calcium levels differences between the patient and not the PMS, list the average intake of calcium / day among subjects, statistically analyze the relationship between calcium intake and blood calcium levels, and examine the effect of calcium supplementation on blood calcium levels and symptoms of PMS. We examined blood levels of calcium, analytical survey method using a cross-sectional study, experimental methods and PMS symptom questionnaires. The results showed that in the group of subjects SPM average blood calcium level, and the mean intake of calcium / day were lower than in non-PMS and showed a fairly correlation between the intake of calcium per day with blood calcium levels in SPM subjects. There is a significant relationship between increased calcium blood calcium levels and symptoms of PMS. The conclusions: 1. there are differences in blood calcium levels and 2. intake of calcium per day between patients with PMS and not PMS, 3. Calcium intake is significantly associated with calcium level in the PMS and 4. calcium supplementation affects blood calcium levels and reduce symptoms of PMS.Keywords : average calcium intake, blood calcium, calcium supplementation, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Abstract

Cancer cell have been shown to extensively use glucose for proliferation, even at hypoxia environment. The consumption of glucose in a hypoxia environment induced HIF and VEGF, which play a role in cancer cell infiltration process . The objective of study is to determine the relationship between fasting blood glucose levels with the amount of infiltrated axillary lymph node in patients with infiltrating ductal carcinoma. This is an analytic observational study with cross sectional design. The data obtained were tested with chi-square test (α < 0.05). This study was conducted on 24 infiltrating ductal carcinoma patients. The results showed p value of 0.004, indicating there is a significant correlation between fasting blood glucose levels with the amount of infiltrated axillary lymph nodes. The correlation coefficient ( r) value was 0.505; indicating medium level correlation. As conclusion, there is a significant correlation between fasting blood glucose levels with the amount of infiltrated axillary lymph node in patients with infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Keywords: axillary lymph nodes, breast cancer, fasting blood glucose level, infiltrating ductal carcinoma

Abstract

Each year in the world, especially in Indonesia, many elderly people exposed to higher risk of dementia due to an increased number of the elderly population and the incidence of mild cognitive impairment in the elderly. The aim of this study is to find out what factors are related with cognitive function in the elderly population. The study used analytic method with cross sectional study design. Subjects were 60 elderly people; male or female ≥ 60 years old. Data were analysed with Chi Square Test (α = 0.05). Cognitive function was measured by MMSE test. The result were found a significant relation between age and cognitive function ( p = 0.014), level of education and cognitive function (p value = 0.000), physical activity and cognitive function (p value = 0.003), cognitive activity and cognitive function (p value = 0.002), and social interaction and cognitive function (p value = 0.000). Gender variable did not have relation with cognitive function (p value = 0.343). This study conclude that there was a relation between age, education level, physical activity, cognitive activity and social interaction with cognitive function in the elderly population. There was no relation between gender and cognitive function in the elderly population. Keywords: cognitive function, cognitive impairment, elderly, MMSE
