Abstract

Stature estimation is important for forensic identification, particularly in dismembered body. The equation used to estimate the height of a population is not necessarily applicable to other populations (population spesific). This study was conducted to generate the linear regression equation for stature estimation based on foot length and foot breadth on the population in the city of Bandung.  This cross-sectional study is conducted to 908 people, consisting of three age groups (children, adolescents, adults), in the city of Bandung. Sampling was done by multistage sampling. The stature was measured using a stadiometer SECA 213, right foot length (RFL), right foot breadth ( RFB), left foot length (LFL), and left foot breadth (LFB) were measured using sliding calipers. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 21.0 for Windows. There is correlation between height with the RFL, RFB, LFL, and LFB. In contrast to the group of teenagers and adults, there is no boys-girls difference between height, RFL, RFB, LFL, and LFB. 21 regression equation for stature estimation based on the foot size. Stature estimation can be done using the linear regression equation based on the foot length and foot breadth, according to population, gender, and age of the subject being examined. Key words: height estimation, foot length, foot breadth

Abstract

Gastric Ulcer is a common side effect of Non-Steroid Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) use such as Aspirin. Probiotic has many benefits especially for the alimentary system, but the effect on gastric ulcer have yet to be explored. In this research we aimed to find the probiotic effect on histological structure changes during aspirin induced gastric ulcer healing process in animal model. This was simple random sampling animal experimental laboratory, that divided Wistar Rats into two main groups. Both groups were induced with Aspirin (300mg/Kg BW) per oral, once daily for three consecutive days, and subsequently the test group were given probiotic suspension (cfu >108/gr) per oral, once daily, for 14 days. Each subgroups were sacrified serially at day 0, 3, 7, 14. The gaster were collected and processed for histology examination. Better histological structures were shown in the test group at day 14. MANOVA result showed probiotics effect in enhancing histological structure changes during gastric ulcer healing process. Better histological structure changes were observed in mucus thickness; reepitelization, gastric glands formation, and angiogenesis process of the test group. As a conclusion, probiotic enhanced mucus thickness, reepitelization, glands remodelling, and angiogenesis in Aspirin induced gastric ulcer healing process in animal model. Key words: probiotic, gastric ulcer, histological structure, aspirin, healing process

Abstract

Domestic chicken eggshells contain calcium and protein that could be useful in wound healing process. This research was conducted to determine whether domestic chicken eggshells can accelerate wound healing. Twenty one male Swiss-Webster mice  with 2 cm incision were divided into 3 groups. Negative control group were given Carboxymethyl cellulose 1% (CMC), positive control group were given feracrylum 1% (FER), and the eggshells group given domestic chicken eggshells powder (KT). Treatment and data mesurement was measured every day until  the 7th day. On the 7th  day the average length of the wound were analyzed and the skin tissue is taken for microscopic examination. Data analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc Least Significant Difference (LSD) with p=0,05. On macroscopic examination, there were  highly significant differences between KT compared to CMC and highly significant differences between KT compared to FER. the average length of wound on the 7th day on KT 0,63 cm shorter than CMC 1,07 (p=0,000) and FER 0,81 cm (p=0,003). On microscopic examination, the degree of reepithelization on KT groups are severe, moderate for collagen density, fibroblasts density, subepithelial neutrophil density, degree of edema, and mild for angiogenesis. We conclude domestic chicken eggshells powder can accelerate wound healing. Key words: domestic chicken eggshells, incision wound, wound healing

Abstract

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor derived from bone cartilage. This tumor can be either primary or secondary. Secondary chondrosarcoma has some differences compared to the primary type i.e. the incidence is rarer, the younger age group, and many are low grade. The authors report a case of a 26-year-old man came to Hasan Sadikin Hospital with a chief complaint of a lump in the right thigh with mild pain since 5 months before consulation that is increasingly enlarging. After undergoing physical and radiological examinations, the patient was diagnosed with suspect chondrosarcoma in right thigh. Histopathologic examinations were performed 2 times, one of which used ultrasound guidance, giving a diagnosis of chondroma in right thigh. However the lesion was finally treated as chondrosarcoma. We suspected that the patient was more likely to suffer from secondary peripheral chondrosarcoma originating from malignant transformation of multiple osteochondromas. As widely known, it is almost impossible to differentiate between the low grade chondrosarcoma and chondroma with full certainty and this poses a classical problem in diagnostic medicine. Case described here was an example of the difficulty in distinguishing between these two diseases. Key words: secondary chondrosarcoma, peripheral chondrosarcoma, chondrosarcoma arising  in osteochondroma

Abstract

Prophylactic dose antibiotic are indicated in patients having neurosurgical clean operations with implant surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of prophylactic dose antibiotic in shunt infection. Between 1 October 2009 until 31 September 2011, 102 patients with congenital hydrocephalus who underwent VP shunt surgery. Fifty-one received profilactic antibiotic (ceftriaxone 50-75 mg/kgBW), 30-60 minutes before surgery until 5 days post-operative, and 51 patients received therapeutic antibiotic  (ceftriaxone 50-75 mg/kgBW), 30-60 minutes before surgery until 1 days post-operative. All patient were followed for 1-6 months to evaluate shunt infection. Collected data will be statistically analyzed. The study found that the rate of infection is 17,6% (9 patients of 51 patients) who received therapeutic antibiotic, and 17,6% (9 patients of 51 patients) who received profilactic antibiotic. There is not statistically significant between all group in shunt infection (p=1,000). Others risk factors significantly influence shunt infection are enlargement of the head (p=0,002), length of surgery (p=0,00327), time of surgery (p=0,00077) and nutrition status (p=0,01343). The results of this study indicate that profilactic antibiotic effective to prevent shunt infection in congenital hydrocephalus. Others risk factors significantly influence are enlargement of the head, length of surgery, time of surgery and nutrition status. Keywords:  antibiotic,  prophylactic, infection, VP shunt, congenital hydrocephalus

Abstract

Helminths infections caused by Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) are found in manypeople living in developing countries, especially in rural areas. People often use pomegranate asan anthelmintic. The aim of this research is to find out the effects of pomegranate peel (Punicagranatum L.) as an anthelmintic to female Ascaris suum in vitro. The research on the effects ofpomegranate peel extract has been conducted on 900 female Ascaris suum in vitro. Ascaris suumare divided into 5 groups, group I: pomegranate peel extract of dose 25%, group II: pomegranatepeel extract of 50%, group III: pomegranate peel extract of 75%, group IV: 0.9% NaCl as anegative control, and group V is given mebendazole 0.5% as a positive control. The meanpercentage of dead worms in group I is 39%, in group II 61%, while in group III 82%, but itspotential is lower than mebendazole, which kills 100%. The treatment using pomegranate peelextract of 25%, 50% and 75% respectively has significant differences with p < 0.05 againstnegative control (NC) using a 0.9% NaCl. The research concludes that the pomegranate peelextract has an anthelmintic effect against Ascaris suum females in vitro. Keywords: pomegranate peel extract, anthelmintic effect, in vitro

Abstract

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and acupuncture are treatments forinflammatory pain. The purpose of this study is to see the effectiveness of mefenamic acid, adrug from the class of NSAIDs compared with acupuncture therapy in 24 male Wistar rats thathave received intraplantar induced of carrageenan. The experimental animals are divided intosix groups: pain control group, mefenamic acid group, before-induction acupuncture group,after-induction acupuncture group, before-induction mefenamic acid-acupuncture combinationgroup, and after-induction mefenamic acid-acupuncture combination. Inflammation and painassessment with inflammation volume and pain threshold parameters tenderness is done every60 minutes during 6 hours after induction of carrageenan. The results of animal studies showthat the combination of mefenamic acid - acupuncture before induction (inflammation inhibitionvalue of 40.24%; pain inhibition value 8.95%) shows a significantly smaller value (p <0.05) inreducing inflammation and increasing the pain threshold compared to single mefenamic acidgroup (inflammation inhibition value 58.53%; the pain inhibition value 29.09%) and singleacupuncture therapy before induction (inflammation inhibition value 78.04%; the paininhibition value 23.07%). It happens because mefenamic acid inhibits the action of acupunctureas an analgesic. This study concludes that the administration of mefenamic acid degrades theeffectiveness of acupuncture therapy in addressing inflammatory pain. Keywords: acupuncture, mefenamic acid, carragenaan, analgesic, antiinflammation
