Abstract

The objective of the research is to investigate how significant the improvement of students’ speaking skill is by using cue card as media for teaching speaking of third semester Accounting students of Pontianak State Polytechnic in the academic year of 2017/2018. The research methodology applied is pre-experimental study. The techniques of data collecting are pre-test and post-test of speaking. The development of students’ speaking can be seen from the interval score of pre-test and post-test. The interval significance is known by applying T-test. The result of data analysis shows that: (1) Pre-test mean score (6.22) is lower than post-test (7.69). The interval score of pre-test and post-test is 1.47; (2) t-obtained (16.3) is higher than t-table (2.045). It indicates the Alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that the development of students’ speaking skill by using cue card is significant.

Abstract

The students must prepare their best education and have good characters to compete due to tight globalization. This study aimed to describe the process of character building with contextualism. The method used in this research was quantitative descriptive with contextualism approach which has seven stages in its implementation namely contructivism, questioning, investigation, learning community, modelling, reflection, and authentic assesment. There were five students as a reseach team involving in this study. Students went through the first three stages by finding superior fruits and made their products and related to syllabus curriculum 2013. They chose laboratory work to implement their products in schools. The reflection stage was shown by the capability of the team to do the authentic assesment in the schools. They fullfilled questionnaire containing nine indicators of characters as an authentic assessment. All character scores were high except innovation score indicating improving innovation require more experience and learning process.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study to determine whether there was significant difference of process science skills between student who were taught through learning 5E learning cycle and conventional model on colligative properties of solutions concept. Nonequivalent control group  design was adopted in this study as research design. Population consisted of all second semester students of chemistry education program according to purposive sampling technique, A1 and A2 class were chosen as experimental and control group. Process science skill test was used to collect data. According to independent t test, it was found that p-value = 0.017<a = 0.05, which meant if there was a significant difference of process science skill between students who were taught through 5E learning cycle and conventional model on colligative properties of solutions concept.

Abstract

The existence and boom of internet use among the net Generation highlights the benefits of asynchronous online discussion (AOD) in higher educational context. The convenience to learn at anytime from anywhere as well as building collaborative learning has led many experts to suggest AOD as a promising tool in extending language teaching learning. Regrettably, in this era of internet and Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) popularity, the implementation of AOD in language teaching learning are still limited in number. Even, in this infancy stage, many educators simply apply AOD to bricks mortar classes without optimally structure, which results in lower student participation. In addition, most of the contributions by students were in surface level of knowledge construction and in serial monologues. To address these issues, this article offers a view on the need of integrating AOD in teaching learning language and an instructional strategy called Starter Wrapper technique to structure and manage online discussion for the purpose of generating more student participation.

Abstract

Despite all benefits of bilingualism, young children who are exposed to dual language through early media viewing may experience language development problems. It may consequently lead them to undergo therapies which can be counterproductive to their developmental milestones, especially to their dual language development.  This research aims to gain deeper insights about the impact of early media viewing on a young child’s early dual language acquisition and how language intervention in an inclusive setting of education conducted in ZonaKata School of Language improve his dual language development.  A case study of a young dual language learner experiencing language development problems diagnosed as symptoms of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) was conducted by interviewing participant’s parents to gain preliminary data about his language development problems.  Observations took place during 108-hour language intervention sessions.  The finding is that early dual language exposure through early media viewing without adequate social interaction pertinently results in language development problems which are prone to be interpreted as symptoms of ASD rather than as a natural process of bilingualism. Language intervention conducted in an inclusive setting of education which stimulates social interaction and communication can productively support a young learner’s dual language development.

Abstract

This study is aimed to improve students’ reading comprehension through the use of Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD). Students at VIIIA grade students have difficulty to comprehend reading materials especially on report text. Most of them often fail in reading comprehension tests caused by the lack of language mastery. Therefore, their achievements do not achieve the minimal score. The important of written test is not avoided. It is one of learning measurement tools in educational setting. Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD) is chosen to solve this problem. STAD is one of cooperative learning provides a chance for students to learn, share, exchange, and assist each student to reach group goals. The social value of STAD as cooperative learning allows students to help each other improve a student learning achievement and others during teaching and learning process. This study is a classroom action research. The data will be collected through test for measuring reading comprehension, observation checklist, field note and interview. The finding is expected that the teaching technique effective to improve reading comprehension.
