Abstract

This research is intended to discuss the illocutionary acts used in a speech mainly assertive. The writer attempts to analyze the categories of assertive illocutionary act occurs in the utterances of Donald Trump’s political speech in last America’s general election. This is a case study that employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The writer uses Ancont software to classify the data. The function of this software is to observe the frequent words occur in the data. Then, it shows that the total number of words that occurred in Donald Trump’s speech is 3046 words. Through those numbers, there are 901 types of words. However, the data used is only the open classes instead of the closed class words or grammatical category. After reducing the data, the five frequent words which are categorized as an open class appeared are ‘job’, ‘is’, ‘new’, ‘American’, and ‘are’. In this case, the data are analyzed based on the frequents words and the writer also reduces the data which are not categorized as assertive illocutionary acts. From the data analysis, it reveals that the categories of assertive illocutionary acts mostly appeared in Donald Trump’s political speech are a statement of fact and assertion. Then, the dominant category used in the speech is a statement of fact containing a convincing. It can be concluded that most of the utterances used by Donald Trump are, besides attempting to represent himself, to convince the citizens supported by some facts about the issue that he believes to be the case in order to establish a positive perspective toward his arguments.

Abstract

This study aims to find out wheter there is an influence of the Hot Potatoes multimedia application in evaluating junior high school students' learning outcomes in Indonesian language learning. The study design uses an evaluation model with the multimedia application Hot Potatoes. The method used is quantitative description and qualitative description, which is to show the effect of evaluating student learning outcomes and student and teacher responses to the effectiveness of the use of multimedia Hot Potatoes. The data source of this research is the IX grade junior high school students in Buru Regency. Data collection techniques used in this study are test techniques using the multimedia application Hot Potatoes in the form of a Multiple-Choice Test (multiple-choice). The results showed that the application of the Hot Potatoes multimedia application in evaluating the learning outcomes of junior high school students in Indonesian language learning had a major influence on quality learning. This can be seen from the results of the evaluation of 50 middle school students from cycle I, cycle II, and cycle III. The percentage of students completeness in cycle I was 60%, cycle II was 86%, and cycle III was 94%. Meanwhile, the percentage of students completeness in the first cycle was 40%, second cycle was 14%, and third cycle was 6%.

Abstract

Motivation is one of some psychological factors which influences the speaking proficiency. Therefore, this study aims at finding out whether or not there is a significant correlation between EFL learners’ motivation and their speaking skills. With regard to the methodology applied in this study, a correlation research was used to determine whether, and to what degree, a relationship exists between two or more quantifiable variables in form of quantitative method. Purposive sampling was used in the correlational research due to the assumption that the selected students were able to give information or data in relation to the research problems based on the research design. Thus, 46 learners were chosen as the samples. The study was conducted at learners in SMA Negeri 1 Marisa, Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo. Moreover, the quantifiable data were obtained from speaking test based on the Heaton assessment and motivation test based on the Likert Scale assessment which were distributed to the learners. The data were then analyzed by Pearson product moment. The findings showed that there was a significant correlation between EFL learners’ motivation and their speaking skills in degree of high correlation. In other words, the assumption views that that the higher motivation belongs to EFL Learners to speak the better ability they speak.

Abstract

The dramatic advancement technologies, particularly mobile applications, have influenced the education sector. The integration of mobile applications in education to change the teaching-learning process has taken place and led to innovative learning, including English language learning. Hence, this study aimed to find out the students’ perceptions and the factors influencing students’ perceptions toward the use of mobile application in learning English particularly speaking. To reach the objectives, this study used case study as the research method. The data were collected mainly through interview and observation. The participants were five vocational school students in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. They were purposively selected because they had been familiar with mobile application and they had been taught speaking English using mobile application by their teacher, so that they could give adequate information.  The research findings showed positive perception from the students toward the use of Learn English Conversation application in learning speaking. They declared that the use of Learn English Conversation application could facilitate them in practicing speaking, bring fun and enjoyable learning during the learning process. Moreover, their positive perceptions were influenced by several factors such as the flexibility and the new learning experience given by the mobile application, the ease to run the mobile application and unrequired a lot of internet quota when the students run the mobile application.

Abstract

EFL Sundanese learners encounter the difficulties in English pronunciation. The learners are often unable to differ between English vowel sounds long [i:] with short [I] like the word cheese they pronounce it as /ʧIz/ instead of  /ʧiːz/, despite they have learned English since elementary school, officially they have learned English for around 5 years. The purpose of this study is to explore the interference of mother tongue in pronunciation field that was made by Sundanese learners dealing with English vowels and diphthongs. The participants were 30 EFL learners with Sundanese background as their mother tongue. The data were collected by recording the students’ pronunciation and analysed using contrastive analysis. The results demonstrate that the learners met obstacles in uttering English vowels [i:],[u:],[ɔ], and diphthongs[eɪ],[əʊ],[æ]. The dominant mispronunciation of the English sounds occurs because of the absence of those English sounds in the learners’ mother tongue. This paper offers some recommendations to the teachers to overcome the phenomenon mother tongue interference.

Abstract

This research is to study about the mother behavior to their daughters as seen in "Pride and Prejudice" and "Little Women". The mother behavior to their daughters show the different way of women as a mother in bringing up their children according to their social and condition at the time. The data were taken from two novels entitled "pride and prejudice" and "little women" is the topic of the study. The  women held in the early 19th century and the late 19th century was described as one that belonged in the home as a wife and mother, and that should marry a man who can support their family. Also throughout the novel women's role in society was described as one that is to be accomplished in household  chore and those of entertainment, such as singing  and playing music. The role of women in society was a major theme throughout the novel "Pride and Prejudice" and "Little Women" The method used in this research  is a study of comparative literature to analyze mother behavior especially for Mrs. Bennet, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, These women have similarities and different behavior in find the right mate for their daughters. This study shows that every woman has characteristics in caring for their children and paying attention to the survival of their children.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the results of product trials based on the development of needs analysis results and product validation results that have been assessed. The product developed was LKPD in writing explanatory texts for high school students. This research is part of research and development (R&D) research. The method used in this research is qualitative and quantitative. Products are tested on students on a small scale. The product was tested on a class XI student of SMA Dharma Loka Pekanbaru. Data collection techniques were carried out through the questionnaire and test stages. Questionnaires were given to students to describe the quality of teaching materials (LKPD) that had been made through filling out questionnaire instruments. The test is given to students in accordance with the instructions and questions in the LKPD so a score is obtained based on established assessment criteria. Data obtained, analyzed through SPSS. The results of the data analysis provide an overview of the aspects of content eligibility, aspects of language readability, presentation of material, and graphics which have very strong correlations for the preparation of LKPD. This is indicated by the level of correlation of the aspect of content eligibility 0.852 with a significance level of 0.000 <0.5; aspects of language readability 0.759 with a significance level of 0.000 <0.5; presentation of material 0.979 with a significance level of 0.000 <0.5; and graphics 0.702 with a significance level of 0,000 <0.5.

Abstract

Extensive listening is an enjoying and meaningful listening activity which is be able to apply both in class and out of classroom. This study was to delve deeper understanding into how English student-teachers use their self-motivating strategy while using Extensive Listening in order to keep themselves motivated when facing various kinds of situation which affect their learning process. It is necessary to keep them motivated to learn independently by using various resources available on the internet such as YouTube, BBC learning English, or TED Ed to shape their habit in English listening development. Multiple participants were chosen in the study. There were 4 students of English education from one of the state University in Indonesia who are used to do Extensive Listening activity. The data were obtained from participants' autobiographies, interviews, and learners’ diary. The experience of EFL students in practicing Extensive Listening was told by the participants through their learning journals and interview. This study showed that most participants use environmental control strategies to avoid disturbances from the environment, satiation control to eliminate boredom, and metacognitive control to manage their focus and concentration. Meanwhile, emotional control was not used by participants. Some of participants will try to use commitment control strategy in the future. Therefore, this study indicated that English teachers or lecturers must be aware that self-regulation skills which is used by students outside the classroom is able to support students’ listening development in the foreign language English classroom.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine students’ perspectives on best practices to promote writing skills by using self-assessment technique named reflective journal in EFL class. The method of this study is qualitative research. The data collected and analyzed from this study to compromise a better understanding of students’ perspectives on how reflective journal writing of self-assessment promotes their writing proficiency. In this study, the writer collected the data by using semi-structured interviews and focused on twelve students from high school who taught by using reflective journal in Surakarta, Jawa Tengah. The finding of this study identified how students’ perspectives on reflective journals to promote their writing proficiency. The result of this study indicated the positive impacts of reflective journals in enhancing students’ writing proficiency. Nevertheless, there were several difficulties students faced during learning process. There were also some challenges such as students’ lack of motivation. However, both the teacher and the students were actively involved in overcoming those problems. In sum, students thought that reflective journal makes their writing practices exciting, enjoying, and motivating.

Abstract

The research aimed explores politeness approaches in EFL textbooks, especially Indonesian English textbooks. There were two textbooks which analysed as the sample for this study. The textbooks entitled “Talk Active 1” and “Talk Active 2: Language and Culture Programme”. The researcher limited the analysis on the dialogs which provided as materials in the textbooks. Brown & Levinson's (1987) politeness strategies were applied to categorize the data. The researcher applied content analysis method proposed by Denscombe, (2010) as the research method. The results of the study revealed bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record were reflected in the Indonesian English textbooks. Both types of bald on-record strategies were found in the Indonesian English textbooks. However, there were only three types of off-records strategies were reflected in the textbooks. The finding revealed 11 types of positive politeness as strategy follows: S1: Notice, attend to hearer; S2: Exaggerate, S3: Intensify interest to hearer; S4: Use in-group identity markers; S6: Avoid disagreement; S7: Presuppose/assert/raise common ground; S8: Joke; S10: Offer, promise; S12: Include both speaker and hearer in the activity; S13: Give (or ask for) reasons; S14: assume or assert reciprocity. The result also presented 8 types of negative politeness as follows: S1: Be conventionally indirect; S2: Question, hedge; S3: Be pessimistic; S4: Minimize the imposition; S5: Give deference; S6: Apologize; S7: Impersonalize speaker and hearer and S10: Go on record as incurring a debt, or as not indebting hearer. The analysis showed positive and negative politeness strategies were central strategies that reflected in the textbooks. It proved that Indonesian English textbooks have pragmatics input for the students.
