The researchers conducted the study at an Indonesian International School in Surakarta which involved two teachers as the participants by employing interview and unstructured questionnaire to collect the data. The result evidently showed that teachers in expanding circle were aware about the evolvement of English as Lingua Franca in the world. They believed that the features of English as Lingua Franca (ELF) are unproblematic as long as it does not change the fundament of their utterances. Henceforth, the teachers support the lexico-grammar features of ELF. In their speaking class, teachers give tolerance to the students who appearing these features in their classroom interaction. Furthermore, the result of this research could inspire other teachers to be more aware toward the evolvement of ELF, so that they could integrate and apply the relevancy of ELF in teaching learning process.

The current paper utilized qualitative research in the form of case study. Besides, the participants were the fourth-semester students of English department in Universitas Mataram. The method of collecting the data employed interview and observation. To validate the data, the triangulations of the data source and data collection method were utilized. At the end, to analyze the data, the interactive model was employed. The result revealed that 1). The students get the influences on their reading and speaking skills by learning target-language culture in Cross Culture Understanding (CCU) class, 2). The influence in reading can be seen when the students’ gaining new vocabulary from the texts they read and produced it when they spoke, and 3). In speaking, the students’ accent still affected greatly by the interference of their native accent and culture. The paper also suggests that employing the mixed method (quantitative and qualitative methods) might be useful and more preferable to see the influence on the students’ language skills as the effect of attending the CCU class and learning the target-language culture.

Abstract

Since the development of information technology grows rapidly, the educational institutions are offered various media or tools of instruction supporting and enhancing teaching and learning process. E-textbooks are a variety of technology which changes the experience of classroom language from traditional into paperless in reading classroom. This technology facilitates the teacher and the students to utilize computer and paper-based reading tasks in realizing the functions of the e-learning environment. It creates an atmosphere of independent acquisition and quality pedagogical strategies which can improve the efficiency of teaching and learning. The use of electronic textbook completed by hypertext and multimedia tools clearly demonstrated the advantage of this technology compared with traditional textbooks. This research is about the teacher and students’ views on using e-textbooks for reading in EFL classroom. This research aims to identify, describe, and analyze teacher and students’ perceptions on using e-textbooks technology as the paper textbooks in teaching and learning reading for Indonesian lower secondary school. Mix method of qualitative and quantitative was applied in the research. The research was conducted on an English teacher and the twenty-five eighth-grade students who used e-textbooks in reading classroom of Islamic junior high school in Lampung, Indonesian. The techniques of data collection used were interviews, questionnaires, observation, and documentation. The results showed that the teacher and majority of the students had a good perception of using e-textbooks. Considering insufficiently available textbooks provided by the government which do not meet students’ need and interest, the teacher should find out and develop many other resources for teaching and learning in the classroom. However, e-textbook technology will not displace traditional paper textbooks in the future, but they will become the perfect complement to paper textbooks.

Abstract

This study was aimed at examining the perceptions of vocational high school students towards questions and questioning technique produced in classroom interactions. Questions play important role in classroom interaction, especially in the 21st century – in which critical thinking skills are the target of learning, beside content knowledge. Almost in every classroom, questions are used for various purposes. It might be given at the initial stage, when core activities take place, or at the end of the lesson. Therefore, it is important that teachers are skilful in questioning, know what types of questions can trigger critical thinking, are aware of whom the questions are for, how questions are used to manage classroom, etc. 98 students of a vocational high school participated in the study, responding to a questionnaire developed on the basis of the purposes of questions and the tactics for questioning. Descriptive qualitative was used as the method of study, with the help of questionnaire as the instrument for collecting data. SPSS data analysis application was used to get description of the phenomenon. The result showed that most students favored questions. It sharpened their thinking ability. It reflected also the fact that teachers were quite skilful in questioning, as items of the questionnaire targeted information on purposes and tactics of questioning. We can say that questions and questioning techniques were well-practiced. Key words: students’ perception, EFL classroom, purpose of questions, questioning technique

Abstract

This journal is aimed at investigating the accuracy of Kataku Version 1.1 and Transtool10 Rar and knowing its benefit for teaching writing. This is important because Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) has become a need and practical translation tool as a software to translate source language text (SL) into the target language (TL). The number of users of both devices requires a proof of whether both tools are qualified enough to translate from SL to TL. This study used descriptive qualitative methods with data collection techniques using documents, interviews and questionnaires. While the data analysis technique used component analysis consisting of four parts, that is, domain, taxonomy, component and cultural theme analysis using “criteria based sampling” 1 to 3, that is, accurate (3), less accurate (2) and not accurate (1). The results showed the quality of the "Kataku Version 1.1”was 24% accurate, 32% less accurate, and 45% inaccurate, while "Transtool. 10 Rar" was 33% accurate, 32% less accurate, and 35% inaccurate. Of the two CATs above, Transtool10 RAR has a higher level of accuracy than Kataku Version 1.1. In terms of error, the most common mistakes made by both were sequentially at semantic level, syntax, phrase, word order, lexical, lost in contact, and word content. However, from the error rate made by the two translation tools, Transtools 10 Rar got less error than the Kataku Version 1.1. In the case of teaching language, using these two software in translation was still very advantageous, especially for teaching writing and reading. By knowing the quality results of translation from one language to another, the students got much improvement by analyzing errors of vocabulary usages, grammar, the messages of the texts and writing products because as known that translator  was the  writer too. However, there was still a little obstacles using both software especially if the users saw the results of translation only as the collection of words which were isolated and independent. Its effects led to the misuses of the words either it is used in collocation or in  terms of different genre of the texts. Thus it can be concluded that the two tools are not feasible to be used to translate various texts without involving professional translation experts by using appropriate proofreading and editing. In addition, for teaching language, both software are still effective and good for future applied language teaching and learning.

Abstract

Background: Although many kinds of research on gender discrimination have been made, empirical research on this matter under the perspective of translation technique is still rare. Therefore, this present research aimed to study gender discrimination in three novels authored by Pramoedya Ananta Toer and how gender discrimination is translated into English. Methodology: This case study was applied in three novels written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Anak Semua Bangsa, Rumah Kaca, and Jejak Langkah. The data were collected through observations and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings: The results showed that gender discrimination in the three novels was subordination, stereotype, marginalization, workload, and violence. Gender discrimination is translated using established equivalence, explicitation, modulation, paraphrase, implicitation, addition, transposition, reduction, compensation, discursive creation, pure borrowing, deletion, generalization, and particularization. Conclusion: This research reveals that gender discrimination is a phenomenon that commonly occurs in the world community. The research implications are also discussed either empirically or practically at the end of this article.
