Abstract

The objectives of this research were to know the diameter and hatching rate of eggs, development rate of embryos, and survival rate of larvae of three subspecies of giant gouramy. Design experiment used in this study was completely randomized design (CRD). Eggs were incubated at 290C and larvae were reared at the same temperature until post larvae stage (most of the yolk sac completely absorbed). The results showed that there was no significant difference among subspecies (a=5%). The average diameter of the eggs were 2.61, 2.47, and 2.39 mm for bule, bastar, and bluesafir, respectively. The highest hatching rate was reached by eggs of bluesafir, followed by bastar and bule. In addition, survival rates of larvae were 93.80%, 91.60%, and 84.20% for bule, bastar, and bluesafir, respectively. The highest specific length growth rate reached by bluesafir (7.4% per day) followed by bastar (6.80% per day) and bule (5.72% per day). The highest specific weight growth rate was reached by bule (6.85% per day) followed by bluesafir (6.65% per day) and bastar (5.37% per day).

Abstract

Blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) known as “SS” (Super Shrimp) originated as wild larvae from Panama, and is currently in its 22nd generation of domestication. They have undergone a systematic process of selection for enhancement of growth and fecundity, and in particular, for resistance improvement to the IHHN virus. The SS-blue shrimp are significantly more tolerant to low water temperatures than Penaeus monodon or Litopenaeus vannamei. This characteristic was effluent to the broodstock management of blue shrimp. The critical phase of larval rearing is on the interchange from zoea to mysis, but almost no mortality on the post larvae stadium.  It was observed during larvae rearing using modulation system indicated by the survival rate of nauplius to PL 5 was 29%, but PL 5 to PL 15 reached 97%.  Growth of larvae and post larvae in the modulation and non modulation systems were not significant different, but performance and uniformity of the seed in modulation system shown better.  Its avarage production in grow out pond was 9,000 kg/ha with final survival rate of 74.5-94.8%, and avarage daily growth (ADG) of 0.176 g. The ponds were stocked with SS-shrimp at densities of 33-38/m2.

Abstract

This research was conducted on digestive system of Java carp (Puntius javanicus). Gut of   fish samples was processed for histological preparation, stained with  periodic acid shiff’s (PAS) staining. The results of this research showed that the properties of mucus cells in the digestive tract of Java carp was comprised of goblet cells. The total number of goblet cells in the mid gut was higher  than that of in the foregut and hindgut.  Morphology of goblet cells  in the foregut and hindgut was round in shape but spherical on the midgut.

Abstract

Level of technical efficiency in fish culture reflecting the fish farmers achievement correlated to their managerial competency to manage the principle factors affecting its productivity.  Objectives of this research were to evaluate technical efficiency in grouper growth out as well as its policy implication. This research was conducted in Lampung Province during September to December 2002. The area was selected by purposive sampling in Padang Cermin Sub district, South Lampung, and the respondent of farmers were selected by census method. The results showed that the average of technical efficiency level achieved by grouper farmers in floating net cages should be classified in middle to high categories with relatively homogen distribution. Principle factors affecting the technical efficiency was level of income from farming fish culture. As the technical efficiency level closed to the frontier, policy of culture development should be conducted using area-based extensive culture approach and should applicate imperative and innovative technologies.
