Abstract

This paper investigates the translation of jokes from English into Indonesian in a book entitled “Bila Dokter, Petani dan Manager Tertawa” (BDPMT). The main objective is to identify and describe: 1) the strategies of translation, 2) the accuracy of the translation and 3) the humorousness of the translation. The investigation on the translation strategies of all data (55 jokes) identifies ten strategies namely addition of meaning, reduction of meaning, change of sentence structure, shift of focus, change of word’s connotative value, transference (borrowing), compensation of phonetic features, use of common TL equivalence, deviation of meaning and literal translation. Those strategies result in accurate (13%), fairly accurate (34%), less accurate (29%) and non-accurate (23%) translations. Meanwhile, the investigation on readers’ responses indicates that 52 % data stay humorous, whereas the rest 48 % become not humorous after the process of translation. Further analysis reveals a strong connection between the translation strategies, the accuracy of meaning and the humorousness of translation. The results of analysis show the significance of translation process which focuses on the equivalence of effects. This process should be started with an exploration to the humor ideas and their techniques of making, and ended with an evaluation to assure the accuracy of meaning.

Abstract

The legal register of Bahasa Indonesia has some characteristics indicating its register nature. The characteristics of the register are : (1) normative, and also manipulative, (2) logics, (3) argumentative, and (4) specific typical diction, or word choice. The normative implies to rule the society to do something and not to do something else. This gives a space to “manipulate” the language to deviate the interpretation. The characteristics of logics and argumentative is the major point of legal register, either in the formulation of a law, or in its implementation. The legal register in Bahasa Indonesia also has typical vocabulary, for example: banding, kasasi, memori banding, pleidoi, novum, and etc.

Abstract

The paper is to identify the factors of unstranslatability, to describe the strategies applied by translator in handling the problem, and to find out the effect of unstranslatability to the readibility of the text, and the readibilit level of the text. The anaysis shows that there are two factors of untranslatability: linguistics and culture. Cultural factor is more dominant because the original text deals with the Arabic culture and the religion issue, islamic religion. In solving the untranslatability problem, translator applied a contrastive analysis by : (1) italizing the untranslatable concepts; (2) replacing it by the similar concept in the target language (including the spelling modification); and (3) describing the concept by putting annotation, clarifying phrase and other things to clarify. Based on the questionnaire, the translated text is proved to have a high readibility level. However, there is a tendency that the book is more appropriate for the readers who are used to the religious terms, and not so for the common readers.

Abstract

The typological dichotomy of grammatical structures of languages in the world as accusative and ergative languages gets “challenged” from linguistics data of Minangkabaunese. There are types of grammatical structures of clauses in this local language which has grammatical properties as accusative constructions and others are ergative ones. The ideas of split-S and fluid-S become other typological analyses that could be used to learn the grammatical properties of Minangkabaunese. Another grouping of languages which needs further proof is that the ‘mixed’ or ’neutral’ languages. This paper discusses the syntactical phenomena of Minangkabaunese as a ‘mixed’or ’neutral’ language based on grammatical typology theoretical framework.
