Abstract

Abstract. This research deals with the production of fillers used by teacher and lecturer in the teaching process. The study involved two subjects: one female teacher and one female lecturer in Surabaya. The problems to be examined in the study were the types, the frequency of occurrences and the functions of fillers used by the two subjects. In the study, the writer mainly adopted Rose’s (1998) theory on the types of fillers, combined with similar notions on the types and functions of fillers from Stenström (1994) and Baalen (2001). The the study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on the types and the functions of fillers. As the source of data, the writer took two class meetings, in which each teaching process was done by the two subjects. In the data analysis, the writer found that the female lecturer produces fewer fillers than the female teacher. The female teacher produced 346 fillers in the teaching process, while the female lecturer produced 665 fillers in the teaching process. Secondly, the data showed that both the female teacher and lecturer produced more unlexicalized than the lexicalized fillers. In the function of the fillers, the writer found that the types of fillers produced by both the female teacher and lecturer had the functions as a holder the turn, as a mark of hesitation, as empathizers, as time-creating devices, and as an editing term. As a conclusion, the writer concludes that the situation in the teaching process affects the types and the functions of the fillers. Key words: spoken discourse, classroom interaction, types and functions of fillers

Abstract

Abstract. Makalah ini melaporkan studi tentang perjuangan seorang tokoh perempuan untuk memperoleh hak kesetaraan. Studi ini membahas perjuangan tokoh utama, seorang perempuan bernama Octavia, dalam novel karya Elizabeth Aston yang berjudul The Second Mrs Darcy, dalam mengatasi masalah ketidaksetaraan secara ekonomis, politis, sosial maupun psikologis. Pertanyaan yang diajukan adalah apakah usaha-usaha tokoh perempuan dalam novel The Second Mrs. Darcy dalam memperjuangkan hak kesetaraan dengan laki-laki. Penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif, dengan novel The Second Mrs. Darcy sebagai sumber data utama, dengan data berupa kata, frasa dan kalimat dalam novel tersebut. Penelitian ini juga menggunakan pendekatan intrinsik (berfokus pada karakter dan setting) dan ekstrinsik (berfokus pada tradisi dan nilai-nilai dalam struktur sosial yang digambarkan dalam novel). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Aston membahas masalah kedudukan perempuan dan ketaksetaraan gender khususnya terutama dalam hak di depan hukum dan hak berbicara. Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perjuangan yang dilakukan oleh tokoh utama Octavia meliputi hak bekerja, hak atas pemilikan harta benda, hak mendapat perlakuan adil dan emansipasi dan hak bicara dan menyampaikan pendapat. Keywords: character analysis, fight for woman rights

Abstract

Abstract. This article discussed a movie entitled Air Terjun Pengantin, one of the horror movies played in Indonesia in 2010, by utilizing the theory of AJ Greimas’s narrative structure to identify inherent discourse. The discussion aimed at dismantling the cinematic and narrative conventions so that the film could be received and understood. The analysis showed the existence of between men and women relationship as well as the image of women in the film. The relationship went so smooth under the patriarchal ideology internalized through some points and one of them was the film. Thus, both in form and content, Air Terjun Pengantin was one of the films that continues to vocalize patriarchal ideology and women stereotyping. Keyword: struktur naratif, aktansial, perempuan

Abstract

Abstract. Makalah ini membahas studi tentang penerjemahan klausa adjectiva bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia yang terdapat dalam karya Franz Kafka yang berjudul Metamorphosis. Studi berfokus pada penerjemahan unsur-unsur klausa adjektiva seperti penggunaan pronomina relatif dan struktur klausa yang mengikuti pronomina relatif. Studi kualitatif deskriptif ini melibatkan 61 klausa adjektiva. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa pronomina relatif who, which dan that pada umumnya diterjemahkan kepada yang dan bahwa. Analisis pada terjemahan struktur klausa adjektiva menunjukkan bahwa penerjemah melakukan sejumlah perubahan, baik sebagian maupun total, dengan penambahan maupun pengurangan kata. Sebagian perubahan mempengaruhi makna, namun secara umum, perubahan tersebut membantu memahami makna secara lebih baik, dan terjemahan pada umumnya sepadan dengan teks dalam bahasa sumber. Keywords: translation, adjective clause, relative pronouns

Abstract

Abstract. Makalah ini membahas studi medan makna tentang verba dan frasa verba yang menunjukkan hubungan makna dengan konsep ‘survival’ dan tipe-tipe hubungan semantis yang dinyatakannya. Studi ini didasarkan atas klasifikasi oleh Kreidler (1998) dan Kennedy (2003), yang membagi tipe-tipe hubungan makna menjadi empat: hiponim, sinonim, antonim, dan kolokasi. Penelitian kualitatif deskriptif ini menggunakan 77 data dengan acuan kata kunci ‘survival’ yang juga adalah tema dari novel oleh Suzanne Collin berjudul The Hunger Games. Dari hasil penelitian ditemukan 34 hiponim, 13 sinonim, 21 antonim, dan 14 kolokasi. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa tema novel yaitu ‘survival’ dinyatakan dalam berbagai verba dan frasa verba dengan berbagai tipe hubungan makna dengan kata kunci. Keywords: semantic field analysis, types of semantic relations, verbs of survival

Abstract

ABSTRACT. In communication, language becomes a dominant element. In a formal situation, such as in an academic activity, it is the formal language that is used. One of the features of a formal language is that the whole sentences are in the form of effective sentences. Effective sentences require: economical sentence; having a logical meaning of the sentence; the existence of clear subject and predicate; well parallel row of words; firmly sentence meaning; solid-grammatical word group; no interferences of foreign  structure and vocabulary; no redundancy; no discriminating words; applying Indonesian Spelling System (EYD) accurately and consistently. Key words: ragam bahasa formal, kalimat efektif, komunikasi, Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan (EYD)

Abstract

Abstract. This article analyzed the poem F. Aziz Manna’s "Surabaya Siti" from two perspectives, namely the oral culture and written culture. "Siti Surabaya" was one of the poems in the collection of poems Siti Surabaya dan Kisah Para Pendatang. The poem was a product of the written cultural community exploring on oral culture. The analysis showed that from the perspective of oral culture "Siti Surabaya" was a poem that exploited the spoken characteristics. These characteristics were used as the motor of poetry aesthetic. However, from the perspective of literacy culture, the representation of I-lyric in "Siti Surabaya", could be understood as a woman, a town, and the representation of Surabaya. Keyword: kelisanan, keberaksaraan, surabaya

Abstract

Abstract. This article discusses the hegemony of patriachry on woman in Tohary’s novel entitled Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk. The discussion is around Javanese women’s adversity because of patriachal ideology built by men. A descriptive qualitative method was applied to approach the matter. The result shows that being the ronggeng dancers meant that the women’ lives were under men occupation. The women were under the hegemony of men ideology, but the women, being Javanese, had to receive their conditions. It also shows that Srintil, the main character, was described as patient, obedience, willing to sacrifice, and suffering person.  Key words: hegemoni Gramsci, ideologi patriarki, wanita Jawa, analisis tokoh

Abstract

Abstrak. Istilah “young adult literature” (sastra remaja) relatif masih baru di Indonesia. Istilah “young adult” dan “literature” bersifat dinamis, berubah sejalan dengan perubahan masyarakat dan budaya. Di Amerika Serikat, para kritikus sastra dan praktisi pendidikan telah tiba pada kesepakatan tentang definisinya dan beberapa peneliti telah mencoba mendeskripsikan genre ini. Makalah ini membahas karakteristik dari “young adult literature” dengan penekanan khusus pada keberadaannya saat ini bagi pembaca targetnya. Disimpulkan bahwa dengan memasukkan sastra remaja sebagai satu genre karya sastra, konsep tentang karya sastra tampaknya sedang berubah dan berevolusi. Keywords: literary genre, postmodern literature, young adult literature

Abstract

Abstract. Makalah ini membahas studi morfologis tentang proses pembentukan nomina majemuk dalam peristilahan teknis piranti lunak komputer. Fokus penelitian adalah proses pembentukan kata majemuk dan jenis makna dari kata majemuk bentukan tersebut. Penelitian deskriptif kualitatif  ini menggunakan 40 data berupa nomina majemuk dari kamus komputer dan Internet data software appendix dalam Windows. Studi menemukan empat tipa pembentukan nomina majemuk: nomina+nomina (28), adjektiva+nomina (5), verba+nomina (5) dan preposisi+nomina (2). Jenis makna yang terbentuk dari pemajemukan tersebut adalah nomina majemuk berinti (headed compound nouns, 15 data) dan nomina majemuk takberinti (headless compound nouns, 25 data). Keywords: compound noun, headed/headless compound noun, computer technical terms
