Abstract

There is a view that male and female speak language contradictively. Female is prone to use cooperative speech act, but male is prone to use the competitive one. The use of language which is gender-base discriminated turns to significantly contribute to the marginalization of women. English which seems to be ?innocent? in this case, as a matter of fact, does not only reflect such ?gender bias? but also immortalize that ?bias?. It turns out that language has ?certain hidden agenda?, that is discriminating the male and female. The existance of such gender bias can be traced from the sexist expression found such as (1) assymmetry, (2) mark and non mark expression, (3) derogative semantic, and (4) sexism in discourse. There are three theories which can be used to analyze such phenomena, they are domination theory, discrimination theory, and gender analysis theory.

English plays a very great role with the progress of globalization as a common international language for living in the 21st century. Thus, it is significant to promote the Indonesian students to acquire good literacy in both reading and writing in English.  To achieve this, English which is comprised of language skills and components, in Indonesia, is learnt formally from elementary school to tertiary level of education. However, reading is as the basic underlying skill that people should have and the development of reading skills serves as the major foundational academic ability for all school-based learning. Yet, the length of study time and the important of English and English instruction does not promote the students? good reading habit yet. Reading has still been as the most difficult activity. Therefore, the teaching and learning of English, particularly on the teaching of reading need to be reconsidered. All elements of society, such as government, teachers, students, and parents are responsible for the improvement of this English language teaching and learning particularly to promote good reading habit.

Abstract

The studies of Arabic language had taken place since the early classical age of Islam. The studies were influenced much by the interests of Moslems in understanding and articulating the message of the Qur?an and hadith. Historically, for many centuries the Arabic language had an important role in uniting the different ethnic groups, nations, and even religions under one Islamic empire. However, while the conversions of the subdued inhabitants to Islam required a longer period, the acceptance of Arabic as the common language took even longer, and still some groups clung to their native language. Besides, the ulama always sought to subordinate the study of Arabic grammar to the Islamic religious sciences and to limit to influence of grammarians over young men. They feared that grammar which relied on Greek logic as a methodology could lead to fascination with other Greek intellectual sciences.

Abstract

Critical discourse analysts believe that language is not a neutral medium given that it might serve as an ideological purpose. As believed by Fairclough, ideology could be won by meaning construction. Choice of words matters in this case. This is because one might create meaning through his choice of words. A precise choice of words might have a great impact. Even, it is believed that the meaning of discourse may function as a generator machine that could shape realities or even change the world. Some cases in point indicate that choice of words contributes a lot to the process of shaping realities. In addition to meaning, sentence structure contributes a lot in meaning construction. Studying the discourse practice and sociocultural practice are another components of discourse which could be made use of the medium to uncover the ideology of the discourse producer. Indonesian Idol, a title attributed to the winner of a singing contest broadcast on RCTI, is a concrete example which gives credence to the notion that our choice of words is able to shape realities or even change the world. The meaning created by a discourse producer through his choice of words might sound natural for the public if it is intensively repeated and massively spread. This article explores how Critical Discourse Analysis touches upon the linkage between language and social practice.
