Abstract

There has been a long debate about children learning a foreign or second language (SL) at an early age. Some claim that learning a foreign language (FL) can burden children who are still struggling in mastering their native language (NL). In case of Indonesian context, English has been excluded from the 2013 curriculum. Arguments supporting the elimination seem baseless and worth revising. Considering the benefits of learning English which outweigh the drawbacks in terms of improving the quality of the next generation, Indonesian government should recommend English to be taught in elementary schools. Some important points regarding human or teachers and teaching resources need to be taken into account further.

Abstract

Linguistically, the more complex clause a sentence implements, the more complex the grammar it embed. A simple clause, as opposing the complex clause, consists of a subject and a verb with optional object or complement. However, Biber et.al. (2011) has proved that complexity of a clause attached in a sentence fails to indicate the complexity of a sentence in writing composition. Furthermore, they indicated the stage of the acquisition of complexity features of writing, including that of in L2 of English. This present study aims at investigating how the frequency of complex sentence produced by Ganesha University of Education students different from that of by professional academic writer, to assess students’ writing ability. The complexity features of writing comprise: 1) fnite dependent clause types; 2) non-fnite dependent clause; and 3) dependent phrase types (non-clausal). Theoretically, the implication of the study aims to beneft the development of teaching writing through authentic assessment process. Providing assessment with diagnostic feedback on areas of needed improvement through authentic assessment in English language teaching has become a solution due to its signifcance for language learner (Brown & Abeyvikrama, 2010: 254). Corpus-based analysis is conducted allowing great number of data to be analyzed to generate more reliable generalization (Baker, 2010). The corpus data and the frequency of sentence complexity as represented by selected features of (Biber et al., 2011), are annotated using CLAWS part-of-Made Wahyu Mahendra, An Authentic Assessment....46. speech tagger hosted by Ucrel, and are calculated by Ant.Conc 3.2.4 corpus software. The fndings projects surprisingly occurrence in which undergraduate students utilizes clausal sentence rather than phrasal sentences. It becomes indication that the students are in the early developmental stage of complexity in writing.

Abstract

Language has the particular roles relevant to the situation and event when the communication holds. In taking a part into a communication, the speaker must understand in what context they speak whether he speaks in formal or informal context. Moreover, the role-relationship between the speaker and hearer, for instance, the communication between parents to children, a boss and his employee. Then, the setting of the communication, for example, at home, offce, market, etc also becomes the major factors in conducting communication. Language allows community not only to communicate with others but also to establish personal identity among individuals and communities. The social class or social stratifcation exists in the term of power and solidarity. The existence of power and solidarity reflects in the way people communicate with others and it can be seen through thelanguage they use.

Abstract

Reciprocal Teaching technique is effective in teaching reading comprehension. In this research the result showed that the students’ Mean score in teaching reading without using Reciprocal Teaching technique is only 75.00.While the students’ mean score after they are taught using Reciprocal Teaching technique was 82.17. The result of signifcant level is 0,07%. By comparing signifcant level 0,07% and t table at 0.05 %. It is known that signifcant level is bigger than t table = 0,07% >0.05 %. It’s means that Ha which states that there is signifcant effect of using Reciprocal Teaching as a technique of teaching reading narrative text toward students’ reading comprehension of the second Grade students of MTs N Pulosari is accepted. Whereas Ho which states that There is no signifcant effect of using Reciprocal Teaching as a technique of teaching reading narrative text toward students’ reading achievement of the second grade students of MTs N Pulosari is rejected. Based on the explanation above, Reciprocal Teaching technique surely showed the real effectiveness in teaching reading comprehension of the second graders of MTs N Pulosari.

Abstract

Grammar is the description of the ways in which words are formed and can change their form and can be combined into sentences in order to express different meanings. The students need ability how to have a good grammar especially in simple past tense. Simple past tense is the form of a verb used to describe actions in the past. After knowing the highly complex grammar especially in simple past tense, teacher needs to move to how to select the materials and activities to be used in grammar class. One of techniques used in teaching grammar is Team Assisted Individualization technique, Team Assisted Individualization technique belongs to the cooperative learning. Team Assisted Individualization technique is a technique in which the students are placed into the small groups and then followed by the giving the help individually for the student who need it. The score “t” at the signifcance level of 5%, the calculation t-count is 9.49, and the value of “t” on the t-table with the signifcance 5% with the value of Df = 50, it can be found that t-table = 2.01. It means that there is difference grammar score between experimental and control class. Based on the explanation above, the Team Assisted Individualization technique surely shows the real effectiveness.

The fnding of this study showed that the mean score of the students after they are taught by using Bingo Game (92.80) was higher than before they are taught by using Bingo Game (75.60). Statistical computation using T-test showed that the score of tcount was higher than ttable (7.247 > 2.021) with standard signifcant 5% and degree of freedom was 32. It was concluded that Bingo Game is effective to teach vocabulary at elementary school.

Abstract

This research was aimed at identifying the approaches, methods and techniques used by the English teachers at a state senior high school in Enrekang, Indonesia in teaching English as a foreign language. Furthermore, the consistency of the approaches, methods, and techniques is also identifed. This research applied explorative qualitative research design. The subjects were all of the English teachers in that school. They were chosen through purpossive sampling technique. They were interviewed and observed to get data regarding their teaching approach, method, and technique. Their lesson plan were copied to gain supporting data. Based on fndings and discussion, the approaches used by teacher 1 were communicative and behaviorism approach. Teacher 2 applied systemic functional linguistic and constructivism/ cognitivism. Most of the techniques used by teacher 1 reflected behaviorism approach or principles of grammar translation method while the techniques used by teacher 2 reflected both of behaviorism and constructivism. In the case of the consistency, the English teachers still showed a considerable inconsistency. Yet, comparing with teacher 1, teacher 2 was more consistent. It is concluded that the two English teachers still need further upgrading regarding approaches, methods, and techniques of teaching English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Word formation is creation of new words, which sometimes changes a word’s meaning. Words can be formed from multi word phrases as well. In many cases vocabularies in language are formed from combination of words (Haspelmath 2010: 102). Word formation does not only involve changing physical form of the word itself, but also changing the meaning of said word. There are also instances where the physical form retain its original form while the meaning changes. The phenomenon is called semantic change (Stockwell-Minkova 2001:149). In this thesis the research proposed that the said phenomenon occur in virtual environment, such as in MMORPG. Multiplayer online games that feature fantasy setting virtual environment. For the purpose of this research, Dragon Nest South East Asia server was chosen as data source. The samples are taken from players perusing [World] communication channel. The result of the data analysis has shown that the phenomenon of word formation could occur in a virtual environment of MMORPG, specifcally in Dragon Nest SEA. There are two word formation processes found: processes that involve physical changes and processes that do not involve physical changes but rather innate meaning. It is done by both processing daily language vocabulary both physically and changing its innate meaning to create new words that suits the said virtual environment context. This fnding may influence future research on a fresh perspective and untilled feld.
