Abstract

Kimcil Kepolen song is a dangdut hiphop and being popular song nowadays. This song is created by NDX a.k.a Familia that inspires people for his long journey as a labor towards a great Indonesian musician that has been loved by widely society. This lyric represents women image from NDX perspective before his successful being a great musician. The study employs qualitative method to look at Kimcil Kepolen lyric as a language fact which is able to be examined by semantic and cognitive linguistics perspective. The results shows us that Kimcil Kepolen lyric represents materialistic women are being hard to get engage and to make a serious relationship for poor men. The facts explain that materialistic women are easily breaking men’s heart and cheating to a man who has a stabble financial support.

Abstract

Learning Arabic qowa'id student Syari'ah Banking Second semester Ma'arif Institute of Islamic NU Metro Lampung still not maximized. Students have difficulties to understand Arabic qowa'id material. Student learning motivation is also low. This is what makes researchers want to do research in that class. Problems to be expressed in this research are: (1) How is the application of Arabic qowa'id learning with cooperative model of jigsaw method in class A, second semester of Syari'ah Banking, (2) How to improve learning qowa'id after getting learning with cooperative learning model of jigsaw method, (3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of implementing cooperative Arabic qawaid in class A with jigsaw method. This research is a classroom action research conducted in two cycles. Each cycle is done in a cycle consisting of four stages: planning, execution, observation and reflection. The results of this study indicate an increase from cycle I of cycle II. The average class cycle I is 60.83 and the average of cycle II is 71. The students also show behavior change in the positive direction. Student activity is increasing. The improvement of test result is also followed by behavioral and motivational change based on research which has been done by the researcher that through cooperative learning with jigsaw method, Arabic qowa'id learning becomes more fun and easier for students in learning qowa'id. Suggestions that can be given is a lecturer of Arabic language should be more creative in using techniques and learning methods that involve the active role of student learning so that the learning process to get the maximum value. One alternative of learning Arabic qowa'id is by using cooperative learning jigsaw model.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the sign meaning of the conversations displayed in the dictionary. So that it need the interpretation of meaning holistically as a sign. Furtheromre to find out the form and the basic religiouse teaching of Islam Archipelago on three indonesia-English-Arabic Language. The researchers used Sanders Peirce Theory to analyze the signs which contained in the conversations presented by the Three Language Santri Dictionary. So that it will be found the meaning of the values ​​presented each conversation is studied. Peirce viewed the sign as a triadic structure. The three dimensions that build the structure are; Representament, object, and interpretant. Thus the researchers tried to be as detailed and demanding as possible to examine every sign of these diomension. The Researchers sort out the conversations that contain the Islamic Archipelago concept and analyze the sign intensively and gradually in each conversation so that found the general meaning or argument major. On the other hand the researchers also use the theory of Abdurrahman Wahid’s Islamic Indigenousization to analyze the values ​​of Islamic Archipelago. The result showed that this study directed at: (1) the call to implement amar ma'ruf nahi munkar lovingly and nihilisme physical and mental violence, (2) the legality of birthday celebration, especially the memorial of the Prophet's mawlid, (3) revitalization of ideology of nationalism; Love of the homeland, (4) the legality of the idea of ​​gender equality in Indonesia, and (5) the legality of hanging a photo on the wall of the house. Abstract

The purpose of the study is to improve the students writing ability for paragraph writing class. The subjects of the study were 37 students of English Education Study Program who joined the paragraph writing class. The design of the study was Classroom Action Research with two cycles. Cycle 1 consisted of three meetings, and cycle 2 consisted of two meetings. The types of explicit planning used in the action research were word listing and word mapping with phrases and sentence for detail.  The instruments used were direct writing test, observation, and  documentation of students’ reflective essay. To score the students’ writing, two raters  were asked to rate the composition by using Jacobs ESL Composition profile scoring rubric. The finding shows that the use of explicit planning was able to improve the students’ paragraph writing performance, indicated with the achievement of the criteria of success. The students’ mean improved from cycle 1 (74.62)  to cycle2 (76.78). Although explicit planning instruction was able to help the students to write better, data from their self-reflection essay showed that many of the students preferred to use free writing instead of explicit planning instruction.

Abstract

It is believed that age become the important factor  to language acquisition. Learners with the age under the puberty or in the critical period can learn the language faster than adult. However, this case is not completely true. I have an opinion that learning the language in the younger age does not guarantee that they can succeed to be language learners. Many facts and researches found that  the older is better in learning the language. This could be another factor affecting  the language acquisition. Motivation is the most important key to acquire the language. It does not matter whether they learn in younger age or in older age. As long as they have motivation to learn, they will be successfull in acquiring the language. Therefore, English teachers have to create an effective and innovative in teaching and learning process in order to enhance the learners’ motivation.

Abstract

Literacy is a condition where a person has capability to read for knowledge, write to share knowledge, and think critically. Students’ literacy is a never-end issue in the field of English Language Teaching. Studies have been carried out to investigate literacy practices in various level of education including higher education. Among the problems of students’ literacy in higher education are the amount of their reading and writing practices and their motivation to read and write. The current paper is intended to share an experience in strengthening students’ literacy at the English Department of State Islamic Institute (Institut Agama Islam Negeri/IAIN) Tulungagung, East Java. The preliminary investigation of the present study revealed that many students have low motivation to read. In addition, their comprehension was relatively low as represented in their paper works. Under a Classroom Action Research Design, the present study was conducted to propose writing to read program to strengthen the students’ literacy. In such program, the students were required to write a reflective essay based on the selected topics that they had to read prior to classes. The findings showed that writing reflective essay helped students strengthen their literacy as well as improve their motivation to read and to write because the reading and writing activities were done in a more relax and supportive environment that was at home.

Abstract

Vocabulary plays pivotal role in foreign language learning. However, vocabulary teaching and vocabulary learning in TEFL seems to be neglected. The study was aimed to investigate how vocabulary teaching and learning are perceived by teacher and students, strategies to teach and learn the vocabulary, and also influences of students’ vocabulary learning strategy on their vocabulary mastery. Accordingly, a mix method design was employed to one English teacher and 30 junior high school students to reveal the issues being investigated. The findings showed that both teacher and students have positive response on vocabulary teaching and learning. Concerning strategies, it was found that teacher mostly employed Fully-contextual strategy, meanwhile Determination and Metacognitive strategy were found as the most favored VLS chosen by students. The study also confirmed that there is a significant relationship between students’ vocabulary learning strategy and their vocabulary mastery (r-value Discovery = .023 and r-value Consolidating = .000, p<.05). It is recommended for EFL teachers to give a bigger portion to vocabulary in the EFL teaching and to teach vocabulary using the combination of fully-contextual and de-contextual strategy. It is also suggested to introduce students to various kinds of vocabulary learning strategies.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang satuan ekspresi kebahasaan yang terdapat pada kemasan botol AQUA berukuran 600 ml berdasarkan ranah semantik. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bentuk, makna dan fungsi bahasa dalam kemasan botol AQUA. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya bentuk-bentuk satuan ekspresi kebahasaan pada kemasan botol AQUA. Bentuk-bentuk ekspresi kebahasaan tersebut dianalisis maknanya dengan menggunakan studi semantik. Penelitian ini tidak hanya mengkaji makna berdasarkan bentuk, tetapi juga makna leksikal dan gramatikal. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menjelaskan fungsi bahasa yang terdapat pada kemasan botol AQUA. Satuan ekspresi kebahasaan yang terdapat pada kemasan botol AQUA menunjukkan adanya istilah baru dalam ranah bahasa dan makna. Bentuk dan makna dari satuan ekspresi kebahasaan tersebut disesuaikan dengan penggunaan bahasa anak muda zaman sekarang yang memiliki relevansi dengan peristiwa gagal fokus akibat kekurangan air mineral.

Abstract

Penelitian dialek bahasa Jawa ini bertujuan untuk mengetetahui kondisi kebahasaan masyarakat di Pemalang, Jawa Tengah. Penelitian ini melalui proses pengamatan, pendiskripsian, pembagian wilayah, dan penentuan status kebahasaan. Metode dalam penelitian ini adalah deskripsi kualitatif dan menggunakan sumber data cakap muka, lanjut rekam, dan lanjut catat. Penelitian  ini menggunakan 200 kata Swadesh dan terdapat 37 perbedaan leksikon dari dua wilayah tersebut.

Abstract

Language learning belief and language learning strategies are two essential predictors that have significant effect toward students’ language proficiency. Learners’ belief is dealing with what comes from inside the learners in learning the language, such as foreign language aptitude; difficulty of language learning; nature of language learning; learning and communication strategies; and motivation. Meanwhile, language learning strategies are learners’ plan in achieving certain goals or mastering the target language. A preliminary research was conducted in order to find what strategy mostly used by the learners. It turned out that the strategy mostly used by them was metacognitive strategies. Thus, this study aims to investigate about the correlation between metacognitive strategies and certain belief’ variables in students’ language learning which are foreign language aptitude and motivation. Moreover, twenty postgraduate students of English education department participated in this study. This study used correlational research, in which the BALLI (Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory) and SILL (Strategies Inventory for Language Learners) questionnaires were adopted as the instruments in collecting the data. The findings of this study indicated that there is negative linear correlation between metacognitive strategy and foreign language aptitude (rXY = -0,049) while there is significant positive linear correlation between metacognitive and motivation (rXY =+0,79) in students’ language learning. Furthermore, this study also provide some recommendations, which is it is expected that there will be more researches use studies using different respondents with various contexts. Secondly, the further research will use both of quantitative and qualitative data relating to this issue in order to make a more accurate data.
