Abstract

This study focuses on the dynamic responses of some of environmental NGOs in Prague, the Republic of Czech related to the development of renewable energy. Their responses are varied. Some of them support the government policy on renewable energy development, but some others express their disagreement to its policy by demonstration or protest in some media. These responses show that NGOs have their own interpretations and interests about dynamic condition of renewable energy development. They are not always having the same perception with the government policy. They argue that the governments policies somehow contradict with the effort to develop renewable energy in the Republic of Czech. This study itself borrows a resistances perspective to analyze the data and information that were collected through a fild research in Prague. It concludes that the environmental NGOs responses to the effort of renewable energy development are varied based on their methods and strategies inflenced by their ideologies. Abstract

In order to extend its trading network and engagement in the intra-Asian trading network, the VOC sought to gain contact with Japan, which was known for its luxurious products as copper and silk. At that time, Tokugawa Ieyasu just emerged as the new Japanese ruler, whose regime introduced a controversial policy known as Sakoku to cut Japan completely off from the international relations to strengthen internal politics. As a result, Japan lost its diplomatic and economic relationship with other nations. The Dutch (represented by the VOC) together with China and Korea - were the only exception as the Tokugawa regime granted them trading license and used them as window to see the outer worlds development. The VOCs offiers had to pay costly this privilege, however, since they should follow Tokugawas strict rules and control. They were allowed to settle and live only on a virtual island called Deshima, which was located on the bay of Nagasaki. Tokugawa regime provided all their needs, but restricted their movements and activities especially in accessing land and making contact with local inhabitants. Perusing the available printed historical sources to be combined with the recent literature, this paper describes the daily life of those VOCs Dutch offiers living on the island, and seeks to analyze the importance of this odd relations for political and economic relations of the two nations. Keywords: the VOC, Dutch, Tokugawa Japan, Deshima

Abstract

Institutional placement mechanisms are inevitable in migrant services industries. However, some business components in the recruitment process are unbalanced, whereby the migrant workers are entirely responsible for their departure costs and fees. Individual and institutional actorsbanks, insurance companies, brokers, and private or even state recruitment institutionsare involved in the migrant workers sales market, and these conditions are faced by Indonesian migrant workers in general. As a result, debt bondage and slavery are typically characteristic of Indonesian migrant workers. Using existing literature and a qualitative approach through case studies of Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan, this article demonstrates the role of brokers (agencies) in managing and controlling migrant labor abroad. Even some of the placement and fiancial policies designed to help migrants with their debt bondage and agency exploitation are also prone to manipulation. Therefore, this article also explores what circumstances and conditions might lead Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan to debt bondage and suggests improvements for migrant empowerment. Keywords: debt, slavery, migration industry, brokers (agency)

Abstract

In 20122013, a communal conflct took place in Rakhine, Myanmar. Religion identities between Muslim minoritiy and Budhist majority have been made use to raise violence among parties. This paper tries to analyse whether the differences in religion identity played as structural/root factor of the Rakhine conflct. Through literature review, the result of study shows that religion identity issue was intentionally played by securitizing actors to mobilise people and to accelerate conflct, in order to pursue their own real interest of power domination, land ownership and business chance. Besides, this research also identifis several prolonged discriminative policies and low economic levels as the structural factor of the communal conflct. This paper suggests that stakeholders should empower moderate monk in promoting interfaith dialogue, involve imparsial third party as mediator, and remove all discriminative policies as the ways to optimize the ongoing conflct resolution process. Keywords: Myanmar, religion identity, communal conflct.
