Abstract

Culture is the custom, the art, the specific institution, and the achievement of a particular nation, people, or social group. Since a culture reflects the life of its owner, when the owner of a culture no longer keeps the culture, it becomes a history. One of ways of maintaining culture is through developing new ones, such as developng new tradition. One of the examples of it is developing new tradition of cooking traditional cuisine especially made by local people using local ingredient with new way of consuming it. This research shows how the local people of Tegal Regency develops new traditional cuisine from the old one, supported by the local govenment to be part of their culinary tourism promotion. The first one is sate blengong, a side dish developed from the old/original chicken/lamb satay but was made of blengong meat, a cross breed of bebek (duck) and mentok (Muscovy duck), sticked on bamboo skewer, grilled and served with peanut sauce. The second one is Rujak Teplak, a side dish developed from the old/original rujak (boiled vegetables served with peanuts sauce) whose name is created from the way the seller put nine kinds of vegetable on banana leaf as its wrapping (teplak means putting something with a force resulting a kind of slapping sound). The result shows that the new traditional cuisines    are famous for its uniqueness and good taste so that it attracts tourists to come and taste it after seeing them being promoted through various social medias. It can be concluded that those  new cuisines keeps Tegal Regency’s culinary tradition as part of their culture that is beneficial    to promote Tegal Regency culinary tourism.Keywords: culture, tradition, cuisine, culinary, tourism, promotion

Abstract

This article tells about the structure of greeting discourse, how people think about it and its function in social interaction.One of language functions is to tighten solidarity among members of a community. This can be done by using some expressions that show a positive intention of speaker to hearer. Saying congratulation to someone who has this special moment, such as birthday celebration, is one way to realize this function. When doing so, s/he is not only expressing her/his true feeling. Behind it, that expression represents diverse perception and value owned by people who produce and inteprete them. The data were collected form the conversationcontained in WA mobile application. They are taken from two groups, namely Semarak Juring and Dosen dan Tendik. The method of non-participatory participation was used and was followed by note taking technique. The result shows that the different representation of birthday greeting indicates various social relation between addresseer and addressee. This representation also marks differentfunctions of birthday greetings Keywords: form,function, social function, sympathy and respect                .

Abstract

ABSTRACT Literary works usually as a mirror of the society is life.  A literary work can represent historical, social and political background of an era.  A poem as one of literary works can do the samething.  In this paper, the writer took the Ode to the west wind by Shelley, that is as the Reflection of the Romantic Age.  The writer used the History approach to understand the historical background of the Romantic Period, and the aspect of the Romanticism era to explore the contain of the poem.  The result shows that Ode to The West Wind is really reveals the condition of that era. Key words:  romanticism, imagination, individual, the post, nature.

Abstract

The United States of America has long been known as the pioneer of freedom and democracy. The country promotes the idea of acquiring self-fulfillment without interfering others.  Man can have his freedom upon life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness given to him ever since he was born. The long history of the United States of America recorded events and tumults testing the loftiness of American Dream. One of the American rock bands portraying the aforementioned situation is Guns N’ Roses. The lyric of “Civil War” clearly describes the paradox of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Protest against war was increasing. Thus, the waves of strike and demonstration occurred as critics toward Government policy. At this point, rock bands also have important roles in accommodating people’s hopes and wishes. By using several elements of poetry, an argumentative analysis is developed and elaborated in order to reveal the attitude of people regarding government policy on war..                             Keywords: Paradox; War, Government policy; Guns N’ Roses;

Abstract

Folklore is a medium in learning English because it has a context of stories that are close to language learners to make it easier to understand. This study aims to determine and correct errors in learning English based on folklore. The method used in this research is English Language learning using a descriptive and evaluation method. researchers use descriptive and evaluative methods. In the use of descriptive methods, the research process begins with drafting basic assumptions and thought rules to be used in research. In the evaluative method, the process of using this method is to evaluate the teaching materials in the use of folklore. The results obtained from this study are knowing weaknesses and errors in learning, especially writing, reading, and speaking to 20 students. Researchers also provide guidance to correct errors in writing, reading and speaking. Keywords: English Language Teaching (ELT), Folklore, Research and Development.

Abstract

Diaspora literature has been one of literary genres that is flourishing for the last few years in Indonesia. This paper aims at analyzing the concept of home in diaspora in Leila S. Chudori’s Pulang (Home). The novel is about the experience of Indonesian exile in 1960s in French, in which he and his friends cannot return home due to the accusation of their involvement in Indonesian banned party. Through sociological approach, the concept of home by Mallet and Golob are used to explore this literary work. A close reading method and classification based on the topic are used in researching the novel. The result shows that although the main character experiences marginalization and estrangement, he still wants to return to Indonesia. The concept of home for the main character is not about the movement or created in the new land, but home is where one originates and that is a place to return.Keywords:diaspora, home

Abstract

This research concerns with social criticism of Dangdut Pantura. The purpose of this research is to investigate a social criticism represented in video music of Dangdut Pantura. The objects of this research are “Sindiran”, “Sindiran 2”, “Sindiran 3”, and “Sindiran 4” video clips. This research uses critical theory, and textual and contextual methods. All video clips represent social criticism on social life related to elite politic and lower culture. It can be concluded that Dangdut Pantura represents social criticism on sosial and political life in the society.Keywords: Dangdut Pantura, social criticism, elite society.

Abstract

Culture is human being creation as a gift from God. One of ways of maintaining culture is keeping the tradition such as the traditional culinary. As part of the traditional culinary, keeping the traditional name of food and beverage becomes an important  part of culture and language maintenane since many food and beverage today were named using international name to sound more hype. Furthermore, those traditional food and beverage name is also beneficial in supporting culinary tourism promotion, especially the traditional culinary tourism. This research shows   how Tegal Regency local people supported by Tegal Regency local government through Tegal Regency Tourism Office preserves the old-traditional [1] and introduces the new-traditional [2] food and beverage names in Tegal Regency traditional culinary tourism promotion such as Kupat Glabed, Sega Lengko, Sate Blengong, Rujak Teplak, Pilus, Kacang Bogares, Teh Poci, and Es Lontrong. The result shows that using Tegal Regency old-traditional and new-traditional food and beverage name is beneficial for maintaining Javanese culture and language, particularly Tegal culture and Javanese language with Tegal Dialect as well as gaining more profit for local people and local government from culinary tourism business.

Abstract

Nowadays, controversy of bilingual education system program still exist. Bilingualism remains as an issue particularly whether or not it is appropriate to be taught for young learners. Learning two languages in the same time is seen to create damaging effect into confusion for children in their age. In spite of the criticism, there are advantages which is offered from bilingual education. Seeing on how bilinguals have good deals as across many aspects such as cognitive control and linguistic knowledge whose the learners are better in problem solving and high order thinking skills, the purpose of the study is going to focus on how bilingualism is suitable or not to learn for young learners. Since young learners are in the golden age to acquire new language, linguistic knowledge and cognitive skills are effective enough to be taught. Therefore, the study focuses more on the discussion of previous research on whether or not bilingualism give difficulties or advantages to children. It will discuss by introducing English to young learners who will meet benefits or problems of bilingualism in early childhood. Keywords: Bilingual education; bilingualism; young learners; second language; early childhood.

Abstract

Reading is one of the four English skills that is important in academic and daily life. Many strategies can be used in reading, such as skimming, scanning, summarizing and responding, and note taking. The purposes of this research are to investigate the significant improvement of the students’ skills after using skimming strategy in reading narrative text and students’ responses after using this strategy. The researcher investigated 8th graders of SMP Advent of Semarang who were studying narrative text. The data were analysed in quantitative and qualitative methods. The results showed that there was a significant improvement of the students after using skimming strategy, especially comprehending the narrative text. The result indicated that p-value = 0,019588. Therefore, null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Their score increased and it proved that skimming strategy is useful and help the students enhance students’ reading skills.
