Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

Code mixing can occur anywhere. Mixed code is a mixture of two or more languages. Code mixing occurs when a speaker using a language dominantly supports a speech inserted with other language elements. This paper is conducted to get data about code mixing, especially in delivered by the presenter in the Hijab Traveling in Trans7 television program. The research used descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected from utterances delivered by the presenter in the Hijab Traveling in Trans7 television program. Process of analyzing the types of mixed code the writer used Suwito's theory. The results are 15 data found which the writer has classified into linguistic elements include the insertion of words, phrases, clauses, repetition of words, and idiom. Proses of analyzing the causes of mixed code the writer used the theory of Basir. The results are found 9 data. The result indicated that presenters on the Hijab Traveling in Trans7 television program often intervene in code. Based on all the analysis of data the writer can conclude that the sentences uttered by the presenter of Hijab Traveling in Trans7 television program prove that presenter often use mixed codes because the presenter can speak more than one language and the presenter has extensive knowledge.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the morphological errors and syntactic errors made by students in writing recount text, frequency of errors, types of dominant errors and sources of errors. The research method used is qualitative research. The data from this study are 70 recount texts made by students of tenth grade in SMK Negeri 9 Kota Bekasi. The research found that there were still many mistakes made by the tenth grade students of SMKN 9 in Bekasi in writing English recount text. For morphological errors the researcher found that students made 56 errors which included single errors with the number of errors 4 (7.14%), plural form errors with number of errors 5 (8.93%), errors belonging to the number of errors 8 (14.29%), errors to infinitive with the number of errors 9 (16.07%) and the formation error in the past with the number of errors 30 (53.57%). While for syntactic errors, the researcher found that students made 113 errors which included omission errors with 47 errors (41.60%), addition errors with 24 errors (21.24%) and formation errors with 42 errors (37.16%). This shows that grammar is a weakness of students in writing essays, especially recount text. From the results of the study it was found that students experienced obstacles in writing caused by interlingual factors, intralingual factors and excessive generalization. Thus students' writing skills are still weak.

Abstract

The objective of this study are: 1) to analyze the literal meaning and the figurative language in the lyrics of the jealous song; 2) to know the reflection of having excessive delusion based on the lyrics; and 3) to describe the emotional feelings of the speaker that implied on the lyric jealous song. This song tells about a man that once had a girlfriend but he lost her and cannot stand the fact that she is giving her love to someone else. He also feels jealous of all things around her, because they are closer than he could ever be. To analyze this song the writer uses psychological approach. In the society there is someone who has the same feeling or experience that is implied from this song, and gives influence to people’s mindset. The mindset is directed with the intension that the people get the impression after listening and reading the lyrics. This song gives reaction delusion to be self defense mechanism and the anxiety disorder. Denial, compensation, displacement, identification, repression and emotional quantity become factors which give contribution to Labrinth in implied his delusion.

Abstract

TOEFL as a kind of English test is used to measure students’ language proficiency. Binawan University applies TOEFL Prediction test to predict students’ English competence. The TOEFL score then is aligned and mapped to CEFR to indicate the level of language ability and qualification. This study was conducted to analyze TOEFL score of Binawan students at CEFR level. The sample was 169 students from several study programs at Binawan University. The research instrument used a package of PBT TOEFL test. Descriptive statistics was used as data analysis technique, mean and percentage. The calculation shows that the mean of the TOEFL prediction score reached by all participants is 413 and the median is 397. Based on CEFR, the students’ competence in English is in level A2 (Basic User). Individually, the number of students who is in level A1 (Basic User) is 78 or 46.2 %, level A2 (Basic User) is 35 or 20.7 %, level B1 (Independent User) is 43 or 25.4 %, level B2 (independent User) is 12 or 7.1 %, and the last is level C1 which is occupied by 1 student only that is in level C1 (0.6 %). To conclude almost 50 % of the students were at low level or A2 (Basic User) at CEFR.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to find out the classification and the semantic meaning of the idiomatic expression found in Gita Wirjawan’s speeches regarding economic growth viewed by Adam Makkai Theory. The source of data was taken from the script of the speech video collection of Gita Wirjawan’s about economic growth. This study falls under the qualitative research by employing the content analysis method. The researcher found 20 idiomatic expressions. There were 15 lexemic idioms and 5 sememic idioms. In the lexemic idiom, 10 phrasal verb idioms, 2 in tournure idioms, 3 in phrasal compound idioms, and 0 in pseudo idioms were found. Meanwhile, in the sememic idioms, 2 proverbial idioms, 1 familiar quotation, 1 institutionalized understatement and 1 institutionalized hyperbole were found.And after the idiomatic expressions were analyzed, it was proved that the idiomatic expression had different meaning than the literal meaning of the word itself

Abstract

The purpose of this study describes the use of language variations found in the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach and the method used is a content analysis method that aims to provide an objective picture of language variations in accordance with the data contained in the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The data used in this study are written data in the form of novel texts containing language variations in the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer published by Mardi Yuana Printing Graphic Printing in 2015. Based on the analysis, there are variations in language in the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer namely: Dutch, Japanese, Javanese and English. In the novel Bumi Manusia, Dutch is a variation of language that dominates from other languages ​​because in this novel it is told that there was a Dutchman in the Dutch East Indies. In the novel Bumi Manusia, Japanese is not very visible because Japanese is only a distraction in just one part. Javanese language can be said as a variation of language that dominates the two because in this novel tells the life of a genuine Javanese who falls in love with a Netherland. Same thing with the Javanese language in the novel Bumi Manusia, English is no less in existence with other language variations found in this novel. The significance of the study is to give useful information about the language variation and useful contribution for linguistic and education

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze, how the upgrading of students’ knowledge concerning with the fact, concept, tenet and skil in processing of learning indonesian language through inquiry approach which is given by the teacher have the positive impacts. This reseach was done by qualitative descriptive with path method. The data collection has already been done through field observation, test,and documentation. The reseach subject was a teacher and a number of 40 students as an object There are comprehensively improving in fact, concept, tenet and skill students in a learning process of indonesian language through inquiry approach. The upgrading knowledge of students based on measuring cycles, namely: cycle I previous fact 37,5 % become 41,6 %. cycle II previous fact 41,6% become 62,5 %. III previous fact 62,5% become 91,6 % The upgrading knowledge of students on fact, concept, tenet and skil in a learning process of indonesian language through inquiry approach, based on measuring cycles have a positive significan impact where each of percentage cycles continously increase

Abstract

This study aims to identify how many average students who are able to understand the use of regular and irregular verbs and to find out how many percentages of errors in using regular and irregular verbs and also to find out the source of error in using regular and irregular verb and also to make teaching and learning activities more effective and efficient. This research is descriptive research method. The Writer uses the questioners to collect the data. Students answer the questions and choose the best respond to complete the affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences. The writer finds out the average of students who are able to understand the use of regular and irregular verbs by answering questions correctly is 11.8. The total percentage of errors in using regular and irregular verbs is 70.48% and 29.52% of students are able to answer correctly. The source of errors that many students have made is from overgeneralization and both transfer of knowledge which is interlingual and intralingual transfer.

Abstract

This study discusses the depiction of Princess Merida. The objectives of the research are to find out what kind of characteristics that represent Princess Merida and to find out how the characteristics that Princess Merida has made her special from other Disney Princesses. Qualitative method is used in this research. Data collection in analyzing movie Brave is used by watching the movie repeatedly, reading the summary, making synopsis, taking some notes, understanding the script, identifying the words or dialogues, reading some journals or articles and finding some references on the internet related to the analysis. The research questions are focused on analyzing the characteristics of Princess Merida. The research questions are to find: (1) the kind of characteristics that represent Princess Merida and (2) the characteristics that Princess Merida has makes her special from other Disney Princesses. From those research questions, the writer found that this research exposes how Brave movie represented princess seen from Princess Merida’s characters, habits, and appearance by showing the evidence through pictures and dialogues in the movie
